Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain | Review Thread | Words That Kill

No.

The pacing is very off. It's not really story focused like that.

Yeah, not feeling it at all, I play MGS games for their scenario and story, I like GZ but didn't love it, I was tired after a moment about doing whatever missions...

We'll see, I think the game will have mixed reception from gamers, especially from MGS Fans.

This will probably be the most repayable MGS based on the review impressions.

Peacewalker consumed me for a bit and that came had many flaws.

I have never played a metal gear game, could I possibly get into this one?
You could get into the gameplay, since it's superb, but the story will be lost on you probably, especially the parts that're supposed to be references to future or even past events.

I haven't played a Metal Gear game before. Played Ground Zeroes and found it kinda boring. But I love action games, vast open worlds, and enjoy some good stealth. Would y'all recommend this? I'm having a very tough time deciding.

MGSV does not seem designed for new players in terms of the story. The story is crazy and even as someone who has played most of the games I tend to be lost. And you found Ground Zeroes boring so I wouldn't recommend.

After learning that this actually might finally be the last Kojima MGS, I just wanted a nearly endless MGS sandbox to play in with a PC version so multiplayer can never completely die. There are a few loose ends I hope the barebones story ties up, but I feel like I got exactly what I wanted from the description in these reviews.

My feelings exactly. A bunch of MGS missions that have multiple variations and can be tackled in different ways sounds great. It's basically endless MSG. Plus, the FOB actually makes it endless MGS.

What if that is the true ending and there is another hidden ending to find? dun dun dun

You never know with Kojima.

Gotta play on to know, I guess. Anyway, as long as you're still interested in playing it's unlikely you'll miss the real finale, and now that the word is out of a "real" ending, no one's going to miss it.

Crap I am big on story. Well you guys enjoy it seems amazing - a true goty contender.

That's fine, I absolutely loved the gameplay in Ground Zeroes, so I'm not really worried about that part. I 'S' ranked every mission and got 100% completion for GZ, so I feel like I have a decent idea of what to expect from that perspective.

What I am more concerned about is the story stuff being so minimal, in addition to the repetitive nature of some of the missions. As I've gotten older I am less and less tolerant of open world shenanigans where I have to complete mundane tasks to further me along the main quest. I know you adored the Witcher 3, but I couldn't get past the first act for these reasons. As soon as some dude asked me to find his goat as part of the central story... I was out. I just don't have time for filler shit anymore when I work 50 hours a week. Give me the best, most interesting content you have from one moment to the next - I don't care if it's significantly shorter as a result.
I wouldn't say there's much that feels like filler, but there is a lot that feels repetitive, just because of the nature of a game like this -- every soldier is going to look the same after a while, and if you're trying to kill as few people as possible, you're probably going to follow a lot of the same patterns over and over. Also, a lot of the camps and bases look very similar. I've spent a lot of time resetting and repeating things because I tend to suicide if I'm spotted, though, so my perspective is a bit skewed.

Anyway, I'm gonna duck out of here for tonight but I'll be doing a Q&A on Kotaku tomorrow afternoon so if any of you have any questions, feel free to pop in then.

Yep, i feel the same way. I really hope i'll be able to sink my teeth deep into the FOB stuff.

The story stuff is super disappointing and the reason I play these games.

I'm not surprised the Ubi/Far Cry/AC template is reviewing well either.
I promise you it's nothing like a Ubisoft game, unlike the other game coming out on September 1, Mad Max, which is exactly that from what I've seen so far.

No. It never appealed to me plus it was on a handheld.

This sucks. Well for me at least.

Hype -10000

It did come out on the PS3/360 as part the HD Collection, with double the framerate and some texture enhancements.

It's much better there since you have dual analogs. The PSP didn't support dual analogs if you remember.

But the Peacewalker missions were also much tinier, given the limitations of the hardware.

mine too. one of those games that they truly make u feel like a badass based on the game and gameplay. so good.
Yeah like most Ubi games they nailed animations which is so important in 3rd person stealth games. MGSV has amazing animations too, which is a huge reason why I'm so excited.

Thanks Jason, appreciate the response!

If you really found GZ boring I'm afraid it might not be for you, but who knows!

By the way, did you try turning all the assists off? Assists, as in reflex mode, marking display and enemy presence display. The challenge increases like 200%, especially on hard difficulty.

Yeah I pretty much gave up on it after all the recent footage. Was planning to give the game a chance if MGS PC was releasing 2 weeks later, but now that they are releasing the same date, my choice became too obvious.

The game kinda sounds a little too long.

I was super hyped about The Witcher 3 but I still haven't finished it as I became fatigued when playing for no reason other than it just keeps going and going and going and going...

Verendus is confirming many fears I had about this game. Hype going downnnnnn :(
If you're excited to play it, don't let me put a damper on it for you. I like a certain style of game, and I tend to be harsh with my favourite franchises. Let your hype carry you whereever it may. Just like I don't like it, there are plenty of positive reviews for it. How you feel you'll only know when you play it. I disliked MGS4 immensely too and a lot of people like that.

I'm also getting very irritated with open world games in general now, so having MGS go that route kind of sucked.

...lack of story focus...

Yoooooo... does that mean less sitting on your hands watching cutscenes? Because that's exactly what I've wanted from Metal Gear Solid. It was new and interesting in the original but became more and more of an annoyance as the series went on.

Didn't even realize reviews were coming out this early until I saw it up on GameTrailers. Time to go into hardcore spoiler aversion mode.

This sounds exactly like the game I want. It's about gameplay first and it sounds to have the most interesting gameplay of any open world game. I love replaying missions for high scores. I have replayed every MGS tons of times skipping the cutscenes after the first time. I want a challenge. I want to explore every inch for 100 hours. This is the perfect game. The story stuff doesn't scare me, I understand it sucks for those who like the story more than game, but that's not me.

What I find weird is how so many reviews seem to be missing on content. Destruction said they had to play the game offline, they didn't even do the FOB. Isn't that a major part of the game, shouldn't that be required for a review. I plan to spend tons of hours in that.

Yeah, the fatigue is starting to set in for me as well. Other than RPGs, I really don't want to see this stuff anymore.

The minimal story stuff is disappointing because i enjoyed the stupidity of the past games unironically because they were still engaging. But if the tapes and documents you find reveal a bunch of other things in the story, i really do not mind. I enjoyed the hell out of the tapes in peace walker... Despite them being very long, they were so full of interesting pieces of information and world building and character building content. That one tape where kaz tells his origin story was sublime. The acting, the writing... It was all so good. Hopefully we get a bunch of that in this game.

Game sounds too long and the mission structure is annoying, makes it less cinematic.

I'm sure the game is great, just seems to have lost a lot of what made MGS, MGS.

Well if this is the last hurrah for Konami on the AAA front then at least they are going out with a bang
I hope I am wrong but seriously, Konami looks as if they are doomed

Greg Miller said the opposite, and me and him have very similar tastes on the gameplay. His general spoiler-free explanation ensured I'm going to love it.

Damn. I'm so hyped for this after GT and KindaFunny reviews. Can't believe this is the 4th game in the same year doing that to me, after Bloodborne, Witcher 3 and Batman. What a year. Can't wait!

I'm gonna need friends on steam for this. Please add me. ID: viveks86

I will add you if I remember. You could always add me though, my steam name is the same as my GAF username.

I know you are doing a Q and A tomorrow but can you put some of this boss battle questions to rest. I really don't understand why most reviews so ply didn't mention them. Are the boss battles great, do they live up to the rest of the series?

The split of opinions is hilarious.

While Peace Walker fans like myself is just overjoyed. Best of all worlds.
The split in opinions means nothing to me at the moment since the reviews so far have been pretty unanimous in their praise and the vast majority of us haven't actually played the game yet.

Amazing scores. I suck at these super long open world games though. I've still barely scratched the surface of Witcher 3 and have a huge backlog of games and this sounds super long :(

If you didn't like GZ, don't do it. It's a bigger GZ.

If they're both really big what's the issue?
The issue is that, like the Gametrailers review stated, the environments start to feel repetitive as you are seeing the same textures and types of locales over and over.

I feel like that even though MGS3 was set pretty much entirely in a jungle, it did a good job of keeping things feeling fresh. I'm hoping the same here!

What did Greg say? Did he say that not loving GZ does not mean you won't like this game? Because I was hoping maybe Ground Zeroes wasn't the best representation of the full game.
