Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain | Review Thread | Words That Kill

I've never not finished an MGS game. I'm afraid this may be the first, if those completion times are accurate. Maybe if I completely skip the base building aspect, it will be more manageable.

Based off opinions and my own comparisons between Ground Zeroes and Peacewalker, TPP is how PW should have played from the start. The limited gameplay is no longer a restricting factor, and the grinding and multiplayer boner for single player seems gone.

Good reviews but I am super disappointed in what I'm hearing. Less story. Cassette tapes. Fucking secret ending that you have to replay missions to get? Come the fuck on. I wasn't too hyped for MGS V to begin with despite it being my favorite series. I got the sense from the gameplay and trailers I've seen that it was taking a different direction.

That's fine I guess but really disappointed. Went from a Day 1 because it's MGS to most likely a Gamefly rental for me. Really just sick of every other AAA game being open world.

:l

I refuse to believe you haven't recently purchased a GPU that gave you access to MGSV on Steam

Not sure how I feel about the length....
Peace Walker was probably the longest I spent with a MG due the end game grind shenanigans and that really soured my taste to a game I had enjoyed up until then.

I'm guessing diversity is the issue.
The issue is that, like the Gametrailers review stated, the environments start to feel repetitive as you are seeing the same textures and types of locales over and over.

I feel like that even though MGS3 was set pretty much entirely in a jungle, it did a good job of keeping things feeling fresh. I'm hoping the same here!
Has anyone commented on how big and varied these maps are compared to Witcher 3's Velen and Skellige? Honestly it seems like the missions take place in unique parts of the map.

What they're saying about the boss fights? They're boring like the PW's ones?

I liked PW boss fights because I mainly play stealth and bosses let me go all-out with weaponry.

Hopefully, though, they can find something that would make boss fights fun for those who want to do stealth playstyles.

Yeah, the fatigue is starting to set in for me as well. Other than RPGs, I really don't want to see this stuff anymore.

I agree that open world is getting stale. I think there needs to be a severe overhaul with the formula so the genre becomes fresh again. I don't think that will happen anytime soon though.

I think Kojima finally got it right. Kojima can't endlessly make Metal Gear games so he finally made a Metal Gear meant to be played endlessly.

I'm STILL concerned that GMP could screw this all up. I haven't heard anybody really get into the GMP stuff and microtransactions.

sounds great tbh. putting the best part of metal gear front and centre and taking the focus off the crummy story. it's made me excited about the game.

Haha. Yeah. That's exactly where I'm at. If Greenmangaming had this up with a working 20+ percent off, I'd buy right now. Does anyone know of any deals that aren't CD Key resellers for the PC version?

Que 2007 for the MGS4 thread, and we had many pages of people being angry at the long cut scenes.

In the GT review they talk about how they deliberatedly have made the story with less exposition- meaning that everything is subtle, you need to listen to the many audiotapes, many things wont make sense.

There is a big twist in the game. a really WTF- twist. Gametrailers make it sound like its going to be polarizing as fuck, and they admit that they didn't like it at first, but changed their mind. in fact, I have never heard a GT review where they are so turned-around-on-itself. very interesting review.

I've watched everything official up to this point. That being said, it's safe for me to watch?

yes. a lot of the footage runs over the existing trailers. Its safe to watch.

Man, all these positive reviews have me hyped for next week! Kind of sad to hear there's less story, but I think I'll still enjoy the game regardless.

I'm STILL concerned that GMP could screw this all up. I haven't heard anybody really get into the GMP stuff and microtransactions.

FWIW, I've been playing a retail copy at home on my PS4 offline and didn't even know there were microtransactions. So clearly they don't affect much.

My experience too. Retail copy, all offline, and I was able to complete the entire story.

It probably makes things easier, being able to buy in-game cash, but it's not necessary. I didn't really "grind" at all either or Fulton everything in sight. The only grindy experience I had was having to repeat some missions in the latter point of the game for the full ending.

.

I wonder if the reviewers complaining about the story listened to all the tapes, because that was how it was in PW and GZ. AKA the last two games in the series. Kind of a precedent there.

Guessing you're going to dislike this game!

Nah, I do hope you end enjoying it, but MGS5 does have more similarities to PW than any other entry. It always sucks to be disappointed so I wouldn't want that for anyone.

Glad to see all the microtransaction freak out was pointless as I suspected. People need to learn to wait for actual info before jumping to conclusions. That thread was ridiculous.

Fine, I'll buy a PS4 very soon. Next gen, here I come. MGS4 was one of the first games I had when I bought my PS3. MGSV with PS4 seems very appropriate.

You did well, waiting until now. There's a slew of quality games to play now, and a bunch of beautiful looking shit on the horizon. If Uncharted 4 ends up being GOAT status I might have to re-enter the console fray, myself.

Sounds amazing, Im gonna go ahead and file this under amazing games life wont let me play because they are too long. Shove over Xenoblade, Monster Hunter and the entire Souls series (including Bloodborne) Snake needs a seat.

Wow, these reviews are promising. I've never played a MGS game but just got Ground Zeroes for free from microsoft. Guess I'll play through that and get myself a copy of this next week!

A bunch of smaller maps with a lot of variety in between would've been better.

Kojima fucked up royally. So much about this game is fucked up.
Jesus man, overreact much? How are gou going to say he fucked up royall when you havent even played the game!Fuck that noise. Mgs4 had several(though not open world) and it was a disjointed mess. Metal Gear Solid 1 and 3 were amazing being in one location. 2 large maps is great. Sense of travel and scope is so much better than spreading themselves thin.

What did Greg say? Did he say that not loving GZ does not mean you won't like this game? Because I was hoping maybe Ground Zeroes wasn't the best representation of the full game.

He said he didn't love GZ because it felt too restricted. I'm paraphrasing but he said it was like a proof of concept of open world gameplay, and MGSV is it done right with a lot more freedom and options.
