Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain | Review Thread | Words That Kill

I am fairly sure that it will rain in Afghanistan, everything else would be weird. There is plenty of plant life and I am generally certain that there is rain in actual Afghanistan.

Yeah there's rain and snow. Just not sure why they've never shown rain there, it's always sandstorms. Maybe it takes place around June or so when the wind speed is high and it's the driest month.

I was not terribly excited about MGS V (Only really loved MGS1) but now it's about to be released and after seeing a few videos, it seems to be one of the first truly open-world games where you can really tackle in different ways and from different places your objectives. GTA IV and V and Witcher 3 are not really open-world in their gameplay, just in the order you can do the missions, i.e : not a true sandbox.
It also helps the controls seems the best any MGS games have been so far, which I always found a bit clunky and overcomplicated.

The ugly

The use of famous '80s musical numbers is more amateur DJ than Quentin Tarantino

wtf is this.

Also, review is slightly spoilerish for those who want to dive in with absolutely zero expectations.

This is the best review yet and I'm glad he's bringing up the bad story points which is putting me off abit .

He doesn't seem to have a problem with bad story points as much as the way cutscenes might stop when you enter mother base and resume when you leave like nothing happened in the meantime

That review brings up some things I've not heard of before, like it still has Peace Walker style 'to be continued' parts for bosses, that sounds strange considering they could airdrop you a new loadout in this game on request.

Sooo.. I didn't want to ask in the spoiler thread, nor start a whole new thread just for this.

But I am completely new to Metal Gear. All I got is a faded memory from playing MGS 1 (I assume) at a friends house many years ago. I remember not getting by even one room. I think because I was very little (maybe 10-ish?), the concept of a stealth game didn't really work with my action/platformer mindset at the time. I was very much a Nintendo kid when I grew up.

What I'm wondering is, how would I catch up to this series without having to play all the games? Any decent "recaps" on Youtube? Should I watch all of Giant Bombs Metal Gear Scanlon series? I've heard the story is very convoluted, which is why I'm very afraid to just jump in.

So I've got the US CE and the JP PE pre-ordered. Any news if the Premium Edition will allow for English Subs (I thknk GZ even allowed for full english text in the Japanes version, right)? Might make for a good second playthrough with Japanese Voices if it does...

It's confirmed that Japanese version will support English sub, like GZ.

Metal Gear Scanlon is perfection. Especially since you have one who is a super fan and one who is playing the games for the first time. The back and forth aside from everything else is damn good. Highly recommended even though they are pretty long.

I am currently watching it to refresh my memories of the entire series in preparation for MGS5. Enjoying the fuck out of it.

1)Watch the KefkaProduction MGS3 movie on YouTube. (Or try and finish it this week. It's a great game)

2) Either watch the Peace Walker movie on youtube or (if you're short on time) read the "back story" tab in Ground Zeroes

3) Play Ground Zeroes.

About US/EU CE.
Do we even know the final box art used for the steelbook case ?

Is this confirmed EU/US CE steelbook art ?

100% agreed, and it bothers me that not many others are acknowledging this.

Even in GZ's tiny mission area we had more 'open world gameplay' than 4/5 open world games made in the last 10 years.

That Arstechnica review is pretty harsh on the characters and story, I guess it's the usual Metal Gear fare and I shouldn't go in expecting the bar to be raised in that regard.
I like most of the characters in the previous games so I'm not too worried, though after all the talk of this game handling controversial topics in a serious manner things like these are disappointing to hear:

the tools used to demonstrate the horrors of such things are weirdly comic. Each and every one of the characters is so one-dimensional that if you turned them sideways they'd become invisible. Everyone has their own view of the world, and that view can't be changed no matter what you, or anyone else, says or does.

The way his two closest advisers bicker is laughably forced and plagued by immature writing. Rarely do any characters in the game feel human. Instead, they're vehicles for a certain ideology.

This sentence sums up what I'm talking about:

it's impossible to take commentary on child soldiers seriously when the camera is focused on the rear end of a thong-wearing super soldier.

The comments about Quiet are pretty much what I was expecting to hear:

As with the rest of the cast, Quiet is so shallow as a narrative tool that it's impossible to take anything she might represent seriously. Her body and clothes, and the camera angles used to exhibit them, are so over the top and so absurd that her entire character can be seen almost immediately as a parody of that generalised cliche. Every one of her appearances comes across as a self-aware lampooning of the usual representation of the female form in video games, rather than an unconscious participant in that objectification. Whether that was Kojima’s plan or not is up for debate, but when things are this silly it's difficult to separate out intent and effect.

I'll have to play it myself to see, but with certain topics, you either know how to tackle them with the respect they deserve or you leave them alone.
Up until now the games had such an over the top feel to the setting, characters and situations that all the crazyness didn't feel too out of place most of the time, but in a more grounded approach to the war theme, especially in a scenario that includes child soldiers, I have my doubts.
We're not talking about adults who volunteer to become soldiers anymore, we're talking about human beings that are taken from their cradles to become cannon fodder, I'd hate to see a franchise I love and an author that I respect as much as Kojima handle this in a way I'd consider insulting to them.

Hearing that the boss fights are one of the weaknesses of the game is disappointing for a MGS game but I'll judge them for myself when I play it, didn't hear that complaint in other reviews I've read, though I haven't read many yet.

Yeah, just saw it was like 60 episodes. Jesus, I should have started earlier...

Just started with the Kefka video, any particular reason I'm watching MGS3?
I have Ground Zeroes actually, but haven't played it (yet). So the shortest route to the most necessary info Before MGSV would be your suggestion yeah?

That is to be expected if you have played PW.

Edit: I think the open world setting is just not good enough for Boss Battles? Heck I heard from the GT review that it is even possible to skip bosses or some of them? who the fuck knows lol.

You mean that Monster Hunter clone designed around portability and 4 player coop?

The only way anyone could say that is by neither playing Monster Hunter or Peace Walker because even the Mon Hun missions don't play like Mon Hun.

Anyway the consensus seems to be that this is more a PW sequel than a normal MGS sequel. A deliberately console version of PW that solves the problems brought on by the original console (psp)... which is exactly what I wanted! I'm trying to stay spoiler free and I can't wait until it comes out. Normally I'd be iffy about this being cross gen but GZs proved the Fox Engine (rip?) to be killer scalable tech so I couldn't be more excited.

or I'm exagerating. Id throw Type-0 in as another game heavily influenced by MH. In any case, the Phantom Pain isn't designed around coop or bite sized missions so there's no need for the bosses to suck in the same way even though it's a similar game in many other ways. Peace Walker needed bulletsponge tanks for the 4 player to work.

I honestly give zero fucks about what the reviewers have to say. Fuck those "weak points". I had a blast with GZ and I'm at 99% with nearly 40 hours played. I loved it and not because derp Kojima or derp MGS, but because everything was so extremely well made.

I find it laughable that people have serious concerns because some random dude on the Internet said something randomly he disliked. Enjoy the game for the craziness and have fun. If it's an improvement and bigger than GZ and have an actual decent story then most should be satisfied.

Game is sitting at what? 95/100 metacritic score. Shit should he fine.

Yeah, Ibwas sceptic at first when it came to GZ. I played the main mission once in like 45 minutes, had fun, but thought that this was indeed very short. But then I began last week to try get some achievements and had a blast since failing over and over again until I get it right. It's amazing how much fun you get out of a single midsized open world map and a handful of missions. The strong suit is really how different you can handle things and how fun it even is if you fuck up and has to improvisize on the fly.
Why are there so far so few reviews for this game? I expected a lot more by now.
Some reviewers want to finish the game first and take some more time to get it right.

People are worried because most reviews state how poor the story is

No, the most reviews say that there is not a high story density, but those reviews are out now and thus probably didn't take the time to listen to tapes.

A lot of the reviews I read said the story is weak compared to the previous games, as well as their being a lack of cutscenes. Sure they mightn't have listened to all the tapes, but they'd get the gist of the story content and quality still.

Has any of the reviews talked about how long the actual campaign is?

I've seen a lot of "I've played for 30 hours", but no mention of how much time one can expect to invest to see credits roll in the game. Seemingly because most of the reviewers spent time in the side missions and the likes as well.

But as someone with limited time, I would really like to know if I can wrap this game up in 10 hours or it will be a massive thing I'll never see the end of.

I have seen people saying 40+ hours for campaign. I don't think it's skipping all the side-ops and only doing the main story though.

Somebody said you need the tapes to get the full scale and of course to get the true ending that is a beast for itself. IGN reported that there is little to no humour when others stated that there is a lot in tapes to find. So they weren't throughout.

I didn't play it, but aome reviewers said something about a grind later when you're ignoring side ops. You definitly can't do it in 10 hours. If you don't want to play the game for longer than that get Ground Zeroes.

People are worried because most reviews state how poor the story is

I've read all the reviews and very few of them refer to the story as poor. It's scaled back from previous titles, but consider that MGS4 had cutscenes averaging something like 9 minutes. I don't think any of them said the story was outright bad.

Lots of reviewers had to play the game at review events which gave them up to 40 hours playtime and it seems many of them couldn't beat the game within that time, or at least get the true ending. Read into that as you will.

I have seen people saying 40+ hours for campaign. I don't think it's skipping all the side-ops and only doing the main story though.

Previous games: 15-20 hours campaign with like 1/3rd cutscenes right?
If we now take TPP: 40+ hours campaign with still probably like 5-7 hours cutscenes.
(MGS 4 is an exception...)

If we compare:
MGS 1-3: ~33% cutscenes
MGS 5: ~15% cutscenes

I think that is what most reviewers are referring to. I can't believe it will have a lesser amount of story than previous entries. I'm pretty sure the ratio is the only thing that is different.

But I could be completely off the mark with that guess... 1 week... 1 week...
