Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain | Review Thread | Words That Kill

Guy completed "main story" in under 60 hours with 40% completion.

I was hoping this would be a 25-30 hour affair (not including side stuff and maybe 3-4 hours of motherbase management) so I could have some hopes of finishing it within a month. With other mammoth games I really want to play coming out this year like Trails SC/Cold Steel, Fallout 4, Persona 5, Yakuza 5...Christ... TW3 took me exactly 3 months (which just reminded me that the first expansion hits in November...)

I very rarely buy day 1 these days since I'm spoiled by PC games hitting the bargain bin after 6 months but these are games I really want on release and also support.
Now that I think about it, I can barely afford half of these...
I guess I'll have to pick up Fallout 4 (much) later. Trails and Yakuza will get my money no matter what, the people bringing these over deserve every penny.
As for P5, I'll donate organs if I have to, if I could only play 1 more game before I die that would be the one..
Sorry for the rant lol, #firstworldproblems.

Well I'm happy to see such good reviews. Helps to remove some of my fear for the game. Just need to see a comparison between the PC and PS4 versions to decide which I'll go with.

I seem to remember them giving MGS4 a six mainly because of the amount of cutscenes and story etc, saying the possibilities through game play were greater than before and it was a technical marvel.

I think.

Edge gave GZ 9/10 if I remember correctly.

If these scores are true I can see Phantom Pain landing a 10. Unless they dock points for the alleged repetitive missions and end game grind.

Edit: Thanks Ninja Kn1ght. Seems they like the direction of the series since PW.

Do you really need to know the true ending from a game that isn't even out yet? i mean really?

What ? No. I just want to know what you need to do for it to unlock as in, if I have to grind. This was discussed earlier here without any spoiler tags and caused confusion because of different statements about it by different reviewers.

I had no idea Peace Walker got a nine in Edge as well! Consider me corrected as all fuck.

Actually all of them did a lot better than I remember, my memory must be off. Could've sworn MGS4 was lower.

he doesn' t want to know the true ending.
He wants vague hints about what it is needed to do in order to unlock it, it has been discussed before i think ?

As it's a bank holiday here in the UK on Monday, I'm hearing (but no confirmation yet) that the LE from game is going out tomorrow. Really hoping that's true.

I ordered from ShopTo and asked them about this and they got back to me saying they'll start dispatching Wednesday with all copies sent out Thurs/Fri at the latest. Fingers crossed it arrives on Thurs/my birthday :P

Why not play until you see the first credits and then look up the true ending afterwards?

WOOOOO. Game are being their usual incompetent selves and will only confirm this week. Damn exclusive LE deals. Still, can't see them sending it later than other places regular editions.

PM me if you're order is despatched today. I'll order it online rather than getting it digitally :)

I'll let you know if they attempt to ship it today, although it's unlikely. There's not going to be £100 in my account for it until tomorrow so it'll fail anyway!

Heh originally I was thinking about the LE, then Game sold out their initial stock, and I just figured I'm alright with the steelbook.

From the previews I've seen; You can send soldiers out on missions from MB or build things at MB and they have a mission time that only goes by in real time. So if it's a 45 minute timer to do the mission and you choose the paid option it just goes boop it's done instantly.
This is how the microtransactions shit for FOB was described to me on reddit.

So now 60 dollar retail games have browser/facebook style energy systems, absolutely disgusting.

Wish I'd sold my nvidia MGSV key instead of using it.

Just preordered from here. So now I have it preordered at GAME (LE which I'm keeping regardless) TGC, ShopTo and Simply Games. If I don't have a copy by Saturday I'm gonna go nuclear.

I'm doing Simplygames as well, the low price and rumours of them shipping early are what sealed it. I'm trying not to get my hopes up, but damn it would be great to get it this week. My FFXIV sub comes to an end on Thursday, funnily.

Isn't that the exact same as Peace Walker? Also the MT's are unconfirmed. The timer is in though as it was in PW.

Never played peace walker.

Fuck energy systems in games... my hatred for mobile/browser/facebook games is once again justified, they introduced this horrible concept.

I was looking forward to playing it but I'm already soured on the whole thing now.

Please keep us updated :) I use 3 of those places and have been wondering today where to order from

Peace Walker pre-dated the trend of it in mobile games though. It's real time base building for the FOB, hell it's in the Ground Zeroes companion app. The microtransactions are not confirmed. It's not an energy system per se.

KONAMIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII.

Anyhoo. Does anyone know if Razer Tiamat 2.2's work on PS4/Xbox One without any funny stuff? I'm debating either getting one of those or the Headset thing from Game (TPP themed) but I;d like to use it on PS4/Xbox One/PC etc without any problems...

Edit: My order on ShopTo has gone into "orders" rather than "pre orders" and they say they're processing from today. Sent them a ticket to enquire about dispatch again just incase.

Second Edit: ShopTo Dan says Friday/Saturday dispatches.

Bugger, and if Konami asked them, no doubt they asked Game too. Some might get lucky with a smaller retailer not caring and sending anyway.

Might not play Until Dawn until my holiday from work starts on Thursday now since I was planning to have this by then!

The base demo, the multi-player, and these reviews sold me on the game. A few reviewers mention a light story but that could be great. What if inspiration was gained from From Software games? What if plot endings are deep in the game and have to be unlocked or they are missed?

Just guessing but at least a focus on gameplay will make for a great experience.

EDGE aren't overly keen on Metal Gear, IIRC. I think the highest rated one was MGS1 which tagged a nine, but all the others have been a little lower even by their scale. I'm not a fan of that mag because they're 100% all about the gameplay, which is noble and justified and all but player agency, atmosphere and general context factor into my personal enjoyment enormously, and I know I'm not alone. And when it comes to that, nobody does it better than MGS.

Of course this could be the 'Gear that finally gives them the pure gameplay they desire.

(edit) I never saw their GZ review.

Not entirely – they've reviewed a few story-focused things recently and given them a good score. Can't remember what, but they certainly have.

From my experiences reading the mag, edge value (in order of priority):

1. Fun or engaging experience (MGS2 and 4 have this but fucked it with so many cutscenes. So much of it wasn't gameplay. Also a lot of non-traditional "gameplay" focused games can still be fun, eg Everybody's Gone to Rapture or Minecraft)
2. Gameplay innovation (MGS has always been up on this but it usually had clipped wings due to the amount of story/exposition)
3. Overall impact (graphics, story, etc, tied with gameplay. Again, MGS does well but is clipped by the gameplay being almost in the backseat a lot of the time)

Their ratings are sort of how gamey a game is. How good a game is as a game. Arguably MGS often fails because of staggering gameplay with its cutscenes so often. Something which it looks like MGSV will avoid entirely.

(I'm not hating on MGS here, just explaining why I think Edge rate like this and what I think their criteria are as a long-time reader)
