Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain | Review Thread | Words That Kill

We do a lot of work on the retail side of things for clients and occasionally they'll get us a few extra copies of a game for the office. Being the youngest there always leads to me getting a copy of whatever title we're helping to promote. For instance I got Madden today for free. I wasn't sure if we were going to get anything for MGSV so that's super exciting.

Weridly I play these games mainly for the story, even had MGS4 played with popcorn lol. Good to hear the gameplay's more varied.

That's definitely a valid way to play them. When the cutscene ratio is like MGS2 or MGS4, I don't prefer that, but it's great for those that favor the story. With the way MGS is, it appeals to people for different reasons. Some like the stealth action and experimenting with guards, gadgets, and the environment. Some like the cutscenes and codec more. So games like V and 4 tend to divide the fanbase depending on what portion of that spectrum you're on.

It's funny when some say (not saying you btw, just a comment seen in various MGS threads here) that MGS has never been repetitive gameplay focused missions though. Since VR and alternate missions have been a staple of the series since the PSX and GB releases. This and PW just work that aspect into the main game finally.

So is every copy in the initial shipment a "Day One" edition? (I've seen games before where only pre-orders get them then they have regular copies for walk-ins)

How the hell are we supposed to avoid spoilers for the next 7 days? The way social media is these days...jesus.

Do not scroll down on any Youtube video. Any video. Some asshole could be trolling a Mario Maker gameplay video with the ending at this point.

Goddamn, Peter Brown the reviewer of Gamespot sounds so excited when he talks about MGSV.

I. NEED. THIS. GAME. NOW.

It's not a good thing at all. It was one of the worst parts of the game. Who likes being forced to do tedious stuff like that? People who like this kind of stuff are the same folks who can spend 30+ hours on Ground Zeroes, but most people aren't like that. The game is long enough as it is without being forcefully annoying.

What game? What game are you talking about?

TPP? Have you played it already? Or Peace Walker?

I have a full time job, two bands, and a busy home life. I still managed to squeeze 30+ hours into Ground Zeroes in the last year or so. It's a pleasure and I'll be taking my time beating all of Phantom Pain, too. It's not like there's a time limit for finishing this stuff. If the gameplay's all enjoyable, then what's the problem? It's not like Arkham Knight where 100% true ending is locked behind a whole suite of terrible Tank battles (great side content aside).

Hey, I have a request for mods. I have a 25 pages report to write for monday morning (almost page 2 right now). Thing is I can't concentrate. Thing is, it's kinda MGS GAF's fault. And mine because I'm so so weak.

Could you please ban me until next week tuesday?

I'd be eternally grateful.

You're a Junior.

Once you're banned, you're gone.

Erased.

The context of codec calls are literally "it's too expensive to animate all this script". That's it.

Nail + hammer = head.

I even recall the developers saying this verbally. This is from a long time ago, so I might be wrong; but IIRC they'd rather not have had CODEC calls at all, and have it all animated/in-game.

Regarding different storytelling style in MGSV, Kojima already openly talked about it.

He wanted to make a video game, and for a videogame, gameplay is the thing that should tell stories. The traditional storytelling in MGSV is just a framework for enabling gamers of all types to start crafting their own stories in the field. He also trimmed the impact of Big Boss on screen. To Kojima Big Boss is Mad Max - silent protagonist that is put into the story that is being built by other side characters.

Ahhh shit, forgot about twitch comments too.

FOB gameplay:

☑ “This guy's loadout is CRAZY!” ☑ “My FOB can't win against a loadout like that” ☑ "He NEEDED precisely those two weapons to escape" ☑ “He set the only mine that could beat me” ☑ "He had the perfect fultons" ☑ “There was nothing I could do” ☑ “I played that perfectly"

For the people who are getting early copies can you check what exactly transfers over from Ground Zeroes? It's really frustrating how there seems to be nothing definitive.

In your opinion. Some people like their video games conveying story through cut scenes.

Still no reviews from:
Giant Bomb
Jimquisition
PC Gamer
or RPS?

GiantBomb did not go to the review event so they will wait until review copies are sent. From Jeff's Tumblr:

Anonymous asked: Are you guys still getting review copies of MGSV since you didn't go to the review event? Seems a little effed up for them to hold coverage hostage like that.

Jeff: Sounds like they aren’t sending it out until the day of release.
Anonymous asked:The embargo for MGSV is August 23, will you have a review or quick look on that date?

Jeff: No. We were offered a spot at their review event and turned it down. We’ve only gone to review events in cases where we knew we’d have a copy of the game to test on our own prior to the review embargo. This wasn’t one of those cases, so we passed.

Haven't watched today's launch trailer in fear of anymore spoilers since we're so close to release and Im getting it day one.

How spoilery is this trailer? Do you advice me to just skip it or is it harmless?

I haven't seen it, but I haven't because everyone says it spoils a pretty big twist at the end.

so, a big nope from me

The best decision Konami has made...in a while.
Granted, I am hard pressed to find much good in Konami, but Jim Sterling is an honest man and suffered for it. It's unfair to say it's good they banned him.

It spoils something important directly and other things that need a keen eye and maybe some spoiler knowledge. I wouldn't touch it, if I were on blackput.
