Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain | Review Thread | Words That Kill

I'm skimming the video on Mother Base, and wow this is deep.

I've already fully absorbed in Dark Souls II. I'm not sure I can juggle this at the same time, lol.

The chickenhat is there for people that are really bad at the game and need a leg-up. Like the EZ gun in MGS3.

Late game item spoiler:
Stealth camo is researchable later in the game.
About that late-game item:
Does it work like octo-camo in MGS4
?

This will give you a better idea than me. Yes, 30 minutes of gameplay dedicated only on the MotherBase aspect of the game.

EDIT: To keep it short though if you didn't want to watch. It is open for invasion at anytime but if you're on a mission and it gets invaded, you're alerted immediately so you can call in the chopper and return to your FOB. Furthermore, it will send out help to other people on your FR who are playing the game so they can join in to help.
Sounds like something where you might want to play offline when you want to focus on a story mission without being interrupted.

Confirming that
a twist
occurs in the game is real shitty, just saying. Can you not see how that's a spoiler? This back and forth "Oh man I've been in the spoiler thread and it's nuts! The twist blew my mind!" shit is not okay.

You kidding me? The notion of a twist in a Kojima game is a spoiler now? Every Metal Gear twists itself into total insipidity, then twists the prior games' stupid twists. You damn well better be expecting Turgid Snake, Flaccid Snake, Rubber Snake, and all the other granddaughters giving birth to their own grandfathers' parasitic nanoclones.

Ah, makes sense.

Will probably save the enjoyment for some people.

You have to specifically buy the expansion for a FOB and it's not confirmed yet but Gamespot is implying the in-game description means you'll have to spend real money to unlock it.

Sometimes, though, Snake’s bros (Ocelot and Miller) will start jabbering about the mission while you’re trying to listen to a tape, which can get annoying as the tape won’t automatically pause, even when Kaz is explaining that you just picked up a black carrot, an ancestor of the orange carrot.

That's going to get annoying.

I just wonder how Konami feels about the fact that this massive audience they'll capture with this game will basically drop them like a hot potato right after they're done with this game.

You expect surprises but confirming the nature of the narrative delivery/method is different. It's like me telling you that
Fight Club has a crazy twist right before you go see the movie. It sets your mind up to look for what it is while you watch rather than organically being surprised by it.
It's not rocket science dude. Step outside your own point of view for a moment.

i don't think they care since they're after the mobile market now.

Super bummed out about the lack of a focus on story. It's seriously not gonna feel like a proper Metal Gear game without the insane, over the top cinematics. I'll play this down the line, but I guess MGS 1 through 4 will be the main thrust of the series with 2 and 4 as the highlights.

I started playing GZ a few days ago because I haven't touched it yet and have it sitting around from PS+. All of this tapes v. codec talk made me try playing the game while listening to a tape and I just couldn't pay attention to it. I kept realizing I'd not been listening for the last minute. I don't like how it mutes game audio when playing either.

That said, I'm sure I don't have the patience for codecs anymore either.

It seems like most of the budget in terms of time and money was allocated to building the FOX engine. Thr fact that they wont have a team to quickly put out a cheaper sequel will always be a massive, glaring opportunity cost. Konami should have disbanded Kojipro after MGS6. Even if kojima was being insubordinate, have the team work on two projects.

I really doubt they will recuperate the cost of the engine.

So the hype is getting to me. I want to go preorder this to get the bonus coupon. Does anyone know how many days best buy gives you to pick up your preorder to get the bonus?

The fact that some reviewers are disappointed with the story really has me worried about this game. No doubt the gameplay will be great, but that's not really the most important part of a MGS game for me. I'll definitely still be playing this game some day, my hype just isn't quite that high.

Saying a Metal Gear game has a twist is like saying someone dies in Friday the 13th.

Skimmed a couple to avoid spoilers and from what I have seen and read it sounds absolutely fantastic.

I completed GZ on PC but I think I may grab the PS4 version of TPP. Will probably have to pick up GZ on PS4 also to get the save transfer.

Disagree. I've never gone into one of the games with the mindset of
"I wonder what the twist is in this one?"
but now I am because
it's confirmed to be there.

protip, don't read the Washington post review. Major spoilers

http://jp.automaton.am/articles/new...fob-mode-wont-be-restricted-behind-a-paywall/

Also, apparently the way it works is your first FOB is free, then you only need the coins for your 2nd/3rd/4th/5th/6th bases if you really want to go Farmville crazy with the resources n shiet. There's apparently two methods to get the coins in game, Missions give you them, and there's on additional way they didn't mention.

Target is doing a special where if you buy TPP there you also get GZ.

Yeah. They say you don't have to get purchase MB coins at all in order to progress with your FOB, so I imagine that you'll be able to earn MB coins slowly?

Yea, basically where I'm at too. Oh well, we'll always have the older games.

Whoa, is the steelbook edition supposed to be the same price as the regular day one ?

Because it is on Amazon.

*bought

*guaranteed delivery on Tues. Sept 1st

That additional way will probably be microtransactions, then. Fine by me as long as they can be earned legit.

edit: oh wait, an additional in-game way? Interesting.

Download code?

I need to finish Batman AK asap seeing as MGS V is a day one purchase.

Can't wait to get sucked in for one last ride.

Again though, like Batman why with all this secret ending nonsense?
I want the full story experience without having to play 70+ hours (no time) or watch the thing on YouTube.

Seriously souring me there but I'll have to try get that ending by years end which means I can't join all the spoiler talk on Gaf in the next few months.

Okay. That trailer really got me interested. I have only played mgs on GameCube and barely remember it. It might be early to ask but can I just play this game like Witcher 3? Do I need to blast through the old ones?

Hmmm. You can probably look up video compilations of what happens in the previous game, unless you know the games in and out speed running the important games in 6 days isn't a great idea.

A question for reviewers or anyone who a lot of knowledge about the game, how graphical does it get in comparison to past Metal Gear games?

Do you mean how graphic does it get in terms of violence/gore/sexual content? GZ got pretty brutal on that front... I'd expect this to be the worst entry for the squeamish or young.

Yeah, that. I still didn't finish GZ >.>

Not sure wether to play it on PS4 where I'll get a better experience or PC where I can play it privately.

Saying a Metal Gear game has a twist is like saying someone dies in Friday the 13th.

That would highly depend on how you say it. We all know how MGS games are and the involved craziness, however stating there'll be a plot twist at the end is a spoiler. Imagine seeing Game of Thrones and someone told you which episode something sick would happen. The moment of surprise have been ruined and you expect something to happen. There are lots of episodes in GoT one want to go into completey unaware that something might happen.

I can understand perfectly well understood and if someone consider it a spoiler if people are telling them when to expect the twist ;)

Just to clarify if you're just saying "there'll be a twist" then derp yes it's kinda a moot point. With that said I know some people are more sensitive to these things than others. Personally I'm okay with everything I've seen and been told so far. I'm still expecting a master piece regardless of how "light" the story might be.

In GZ, tapes are made for replaying/goofing around. Don't listen to them first time you play.

Once you've finished all the missions and you're going back in to get S-ranks or find collectibles, then put the tapes on. That means you can focus on them while you retread ground or try out strategies. Basically, literally just play missions to listen to the tapes.

In the full game, I imagine tapes will be a godsend for long journeys, but in GZ, you pretty much need to start a mission/replay just to listen to them.
