Street Fighter V Roster Discussion: P-P-P-P-PATTERN BREAKER

Despite Sakura appearing on all 3 pictures for Mika's character card just like on birdie's before the Ken reveal... I think TGS is going to be Karin :P

Then Karin and someone new ?

I suppose we will see two reveals at TGS.

I still have to hold on to some hope that Siliconera leak is a fake =P

Bison is asian?

In Street Fighter II his stage/homeland is Thailand and everyone fights in their own country, so I assume he's Thai.

My guess is that Siliconera's still legit, but either Alex or Urien was replaced with Vega, and has been bumped to DLC. My money's on Urien being in the base game as a boss, but he'll be made playable later. The leaker may have known 16 characters and that Urien was in, but knew nothing about Vega.

I mean, Mika makes a lot of sense because Ono and a whole lot of fans like her, but she still seemed like an unlikely pick outside of this leak.

No way dude. A numbered SF, and its first entry at that, will absolutely have a brand new boss.

Playable or not, I am not sure. I am of the thinking that there are 1 or 2 hidden characters in the game, meaning the starting roster is probably 18 characters,. Hidden characters being the boss of the game, and of course, Gouki.

And, I am not sure how they will handle pre-order bonuses, aka, day 1 DLC characters.

I'm not saying he'll be the main boss, but maybe he'll be a bonus boss, like Akuma? I agree that he wouldn't be the final boss, but I definitely think he has something to do with the plot.

I love posting in this thread and I'll admit it , I even love being wrong !

Near the start of the month some 40 odd pages ago I was adamant that the remaining (at the time) returning cast members would include Juri. Now that Rainbow Mika has been unveiled though , I don't think it's likely.

In that same post I outlined capcoms history with both grapplers and women with their presence in SF titles. The highest level of women was actually just barely Ultra SF4 because it has (Chun Li, Cammy, Rose, Sakura, Makoto, Ibuki,C.Viper, Juri, Elena, Poison and Decapre) 11/44 total characters or 1 in 4.

Well, We've now got 3 girls out of 16 characters with , from the sounds of rumors - another girl among the 4 new characters. That means, sadly , we probably won't get another female character among the 3 remaining returning character slots. :( I'd love to be wrong again though. I really do like Juri's playstyle in USF4 , heck I'd even be happy with Sakura or Karin but my hopes aren't up that this will be the SF game to exceed 25% representation.

Moving on to grapplers - these beasty characters have never really been the most popular nor the easiest to use and because of that they get pretty small representation in SF games. In SF2 , there was only 1 - Zangief. By the time Super SF2 turbo had come out , only 1 more showed up in the form of T.Hawk. I think the problem might be a lack of ideas on how to make them feel different , T.Hawk was just a bigger slower zangeif (although ken and ryu's only difference back then was speed so ???). This means grapplers and women were about as common as each other. (1/8)

Skipping ahead to the alpha series - the first entry had birdie among it's cast , his SFA version was a pretty traditional grappler type but with added attack range. Sodom was kind of a mixture of rushdown and grappling and for that matter- so was Guy. Alpha 1 was full of these grey areas. By the time Alpha 2 came out though - capcom brought back Zangief and he was the only traditional pure grappler type character. Alpha 3 brought in all of the other SF2 characters over many home ports but by the time the dust settled , of the over 30 characters among it's cast - Zangeif and T.Hawk remained the only pure grapplers , R. Mika , Sodom and Birdie were still there too but even if you count them , you end up with 5 characters , 6 if you stretch the grappler definition thin and throw guy in that mix. It's at best a ratio of about 1 in 6 but remove the grey areas (guy and sodom) and it's more like 1 in 8 still.

SF3 even in it's final edition had Alex and Hugo replacing Zangeif and T.Hawk as Big and Bigger the 2 pure grapplers. None of the other characters really fit the bill , so in SF3's case the ratio actually dropped a little bit to closer to 1 in 9.

USF4 , again with it's giant cast of 44 characters still had the same few as before - T.Hawk, Zangief and Hugo from SF3. It did add a few new grapplers though - Abel , who is kind of split down the middle like an alpha character - he's a rushdown / grappler. El Fuerte who has grappler moves but gets around ultra fast and isn't the traditional huge dude nor does he do traditional grappler damage and finally - Hakkan. Guy is still there as the jack of all trades (seriously , he has so many moves in SF4). So what I'm getting at here - 6 characters out of 44. That's not a very high ratio , it's roughly 1 in 7.

So basically what I'm getting at is that I really don't think we will see another grappler style character unless they are a hybrid like Abel. Necali kind of fits that bill already though so basically I don't think we'll be seeing another one.

So that basically means - what's left ?
3 new characters - Necali being kind of grappler/rushdown means that the other 3 will be something that isn't represented by the current cast - a control character like Dhalsim is possible for one of the remaining 3 , perhaps a traditional straight up rushdown character ? a defensive charge based characer (there really isn't one yet), hell - a new shoto is even possible
3 Returning characters - I've laid out why I feel like it won't be a woman or a grappler so who does that leave ? I'm also going to say we won't see final fight characters yet.
That leaves - Guile,Blanka,E.Honda,Dhalsim , Balrog, Sagat, Akuma , honestly I think the 3 new chs will fill the E.Honda/Dhalsim/Balrog bill and I'm not sure Guile will make starting cast anymore so that leaves Blanka and Either Sagat or Akuma as the 3 most likely from SF2. From Alpha we've still got Adon, Gen, Eagle and Dan (I won't count the dolls) and honestly I don't think any of them stand a chance. I can see Dan being a training dummy again but he won't be a selectable character in the initial 16 (maybe hidden?) Adon I could see but not over Blanka/Sagat/Akuma. SF3 actually has a ton available but Dudley, necro, Oro, Sean, Q, Urien, yun, Yang, Remy , Twelve aren't exactly top of the line popular characters. I can see Urien being the boss for the game but that means he'll be hidden from the main 16. Dudley, Yun/Yang and Sean seem to have a bit of popularity but not enough to beat out those SF2 favorites I think. Finaly, you've got the new to SF4 cast - once you remove girls and grapplers you're left with only Rufus and I really doubt he'll get in. Birdie and R Mika already fill the jokey character bill I think.

I'd love to be wrong here , really , I would. I just feel like those last 2 slots in the upper left of the capcom evo panel will be SF2 characters. Blanka will be one because he fits a fairly unique slot on the cast and I think Sagat will fill the other (akuma may well remain a hidden boss as always). The last slot in that lower right section that it is filled with alpha characters right now , well it could be Adon to keep that section alpha only but it could also be dudley or sean even. Maybe it's not just alpha characters down there , maybe it's just "characters who haven't been in a SF in awhile".

Who knows , I suppose we'll find out as the months go on. Speculation is fun times. For example I'm going to speculate that the next character reveal will be a brand new character. In fact I think the remaining reveals will go as follows - New character, SF2 ch, New Character , Alpha/3/whatever ch, SF2 character , last character, story trailer/boss reveal, mechanics trailer.

Vega more or less took the spot that everyone assumed Juri would fill. The previous leaks had left one spot unknown.

The problem is that, if Ken Bogard is right, our Brazilian character will be a female newcomer (Laura). And if the Siliconera leak is also right (which, judging by Rainbow Mika's reveal, they very well may be), we may be reading a little too much into that roster picture.

Well, there's nothing stopping capcom from making Laura come from the same place as Blanka. I mean there's multiple Japanese , American and British characters right ?

Kind of makes me curious about all their fighting styles though, I suppose Rachid could be a rushdown character like fei long - with a rekka and everything. Hopefully they don't make him too stereotypical (IE- a moustache , turban/cowl , shirtless, a vest made from ammunition, military pants).

And as for Laura- if she is from Brazil , what style will she fight with - we've already got 2 copeira users in the cast with Dee Jay and (more accurate) Elena , so would Laura just be a replacement ? I just read up on something called Luta Livre which is kind of a freestyle wrestling thing so maybe Laura is supposed to be a Rhonda Rousey type ? Have Abels movelist with a less boring looking character perhaps ?

As for Zen, well I seem to recall reading he was going to be from India right ? so that just makes my mind go straight to Dhalsim , like this guy is maybe Dhalsims protege - uses a similar fighting style but it's a bit looser - a bit faster , can't yoga up his limbs but maybe he can still breath fire and teleport ? faster to compensate ?

But there's also the issue of Siliconera being on-point so far. If all of their characters pan out, there won't be any room for Blanka in the base roster. And in relation to said leak, the recent Charlie Nash comic by UDON pretty much confirmed the Illuminati's involvement in the game's story, which means that we'll get an Illuminati rep (most likely Urien).

Laura = Brazil = BJJ?

TGS will probably be another new character. I can see them saving Urien for last/Capcom Cup.

You don't think they will reveal a character at Dubai Games15? Seeing how it's a week apart from TGS, I think they will announce 2 characters between both events.

I wonder if they'll have Nadeshiko be one of R. Mika's alts, sort of like a Xiaoyu/Miharu situation.

She already has a full model, and R. Mika can just act as the support character. It would be pretty cool, and at the same time we'd get a new character with little to no extra effort required by Capcom.

Doesn't Karin dye her hair? I swear I read that somewhere. As long as she doesn't lose her drills, I'm fine with whatever they do with her if she's redesigned.
Though to be honest, I feel that she might not make it at all, and that Juri will come back instead for the initial cast. I just can't see them not bring back at least 1 SF4 character in the core fighters, so might as well go for the one that's relevant to the story.

Well her name is Karin Kanzuki, so unless she was adopted by Japanese parents I assume her hair is naturally black. I'd love to see black hair Karin.

Her hair is blonde because that's a character archtype, the rich 'ojou laugh' schoolgirl has drill hair and their hair is blonde.

So unless I'm missing something, that would put us at...
  • 1 for PAX (likely Rainbow Mika)
  • Maybe 2 for TGS
  • 1 for the Dubai World Game Expo (likely Zen)
  • 1 at the Brazil Game Show
  • 1 for NYCC
...all before PSX.

I think you mean Rachid/Rashid.

That Dubai thing is before TGS? So the middle eastern character there? Karin at TGS, Laura at BGS, and who ever the fuck at the Paris event?

Zen at PGS, Alex at Capcom Cup and Urien at PSX? And maybe the first DLC character with the launch trailer of the game.

We really need a boxer and when i read Zen my brain goes to Monk - i'd like to see Capcom rip off Anji from Rurouni Kenshin, a buddhist Way of the Fist Monk with counters who mainly uses his fists.

High hopes for the newcomers.. i already like Necallis design way more than the SF4 newcomers. And Rachid better be as cool as Tekkens Shaheen, love that design.

In Street Fighter II his stage/homeland is Thailand and everyone fights in their own country, so I assume he's Thai.

But how you explain Rose's nationality? She is a part of Bison's soul and she's Italian.
If I remember correctly, Bison doesn't have a nationality at all. Also Alpha 3 explains that Thailand is where Shadoloo base is located.

So far Necalli's design is good IMO, he's this ancient warrior caveman person and the look fits far as SF designs go.
Also someone must've forgotten about Retsu :P

Not sold on Alex and Urien, but sure Capcom Cup and PSX are events. That said I wouldn't be surprised if all the characters were revealed before then. I mean no reveals in November, but three in twos weeks now? Anyway hopefully we'll see some new stages in the coming reveals.

But is he really considered black? Because I thought his ethnicity was Indian.

I always thought he was a Black Englishman but considering his country of origin and SF3 design I think it's pretty questionable whether he is Black or Indian. In SF4 I think he looked Black though.
