Nope, Rashid is from Africa according to Ken Bogard. That being said, the Dubai event was really Game15 on September 11th.

He meant North Africa, as Arabian.
Rachid totally is an arabian name, especially popular in Maghreb, Zen isnt at all.
If an arabian character is announced it will most likely be at Dubai.

And we expected Necalli to be from New Zealand, but that didn't end up being the case :P
To be fair, Ken Bogard didn't mention anyone from New Zealand, that was a separate source.

But Dubai is in India, thus the character that Ken Bogard said was from India (Zen) makes the most sense.

I'm fairly certain Bogard never, at any point, connected any of the character (pokemon) names to any of the countries he listed. Readers did that. Bogard merely gave names and locations. He never matched them up.
He didn't, yeah. Laura/Brazil Rachid/N.Africa Zen/India is just the combination that makes the most sense considering the names themselves.

Lots of characters that follow this trope don't have blonde hair so I dunno what you're going on about with that hair-archetype relationship

There are however characters with blonde hair that fit those tropes though. If anything I'm mostly used to seeing them with blonde hair.

But is he really considered black? Because I thought his ethnicity was Indian.
I always assumed Dudley was a Brit of Indian descent, like Freddie Mercury. That's why he has a Freddie Mercury costume in SFIV. Capcom likes to... "exaggerate" its back characters like Balrog and Birdie, but Dudley looks more like Dhalsim facially.

She is Japanese though.

She does look like she could pass for Asian from some angles, given a more typical hairstyle and eye color.

Dudley's base design predates the Freddie Mercury alt by like more than a decade.

And I think it's a problem when people say Dudley isn't black because he isn't stereotypical enough.

Dudley's most likely black, but I think him being of Indian descent is also fairly believable given the history of his home country. Somebody ask Ono about it on Twitter.

And there it is. It's no wonder these game devs don't deviate from creating stereotypical caricatures of black folks in there games. Go any route of even ever so slightly (he still regulated to being a boxer that's fairly burly) not a stereotype and you got folks obviously Not-in-the-Know claiming he's anything but black. LOL, it's disgusting. We need much more of US in this industry.

What's next, Raven from Tekken is no longer black cuz they gave him a blonde fade and a Stray-from-the-norm (for black characters) fighting style.

My point is that Dudley's ethnicity might have been what inspired the Freddie Mercury costume. It makes sense to give a British Indian character a costume based on the most famous British Indian that ever lived. Britain ruled India for a long time, and Britain currently has a very large Indian population. We'll never know Dudley's true ethnicity unless Capcom tells us. I don't know why it's okay to assume that he's black but it's offensive to assume that he's British Indian.

It’s sort of offensive to assume a character is ethnically African based solely on the color of their skin. I definitely wouldn’t call Akuma, Urien, or Dhalsim black, and Dudley is just as dark as they are. The argument goes beyond skin color.

Agree with you. I think a lot of people just aren't aware of Britain's history with India. The idea of him being Indian didn't come out of nowhere, there is a precedent. Not saying he fit sure is or isn't black, but there's just as much chance that he's not as that he is.

It's not offensive to acknowledge one of your own as one of your own. No one really considers Akuma, Urien or Dhalsim black. Just the same, Dudley isn't racially ambiguous, he's black.

Dudley isn't a real person. You can't ask him about his race. The "Dudley is black" and "Dudley is British Indian" camps both have perfectly valid reasons for their assumptions. There is no correct answer.

Except he looks like he could be Indian or both. People aren't trying to retcon him into being white like with Clemintine, and Indians are seen even less so don't pull that card. The only thing about him that makes me think he's black is his skin and that's not enough to defualt him to black.

I totally thought he was Indian from appearances because of the facial hair and the UK featuring a huge number of Indian immigrants. Found out otherwise, wasn't a big deal. It's a very easy mistake to make.

Thanks. Not that I distrust the source, but is there anything more direct from Capcom?

Except that the correct answer in this case is that he's black, lol! You got that source from above plus the fact that Capcom has so often and shamelessly derived it's characters from known sources, and whom was the heavyweight champ and most known, similar boxer at that time just prior to and around the release of SFIII and Dudley's 1st appearance?

This is embarrassing to read. That's not a source. That's a super-fan claiming that Dudley is classified as being of African descent but I've not seen this shit anywhere, Japanese or otherwise. I invite anyone to show something that proves otherwise. Guy's gotten flak recently for picking and choosing his head-canon like a DBZ fanboy.

I don't know if it's funny or sad that some people are literally offended that the first thought of Dudley someone might have is that he's something else. I've been team #indian but only because I'm south asian and it's light-hearted at best. I genuinely wouldn't care if he is black. As of now, though, there's literally no official information about it and knowing Capcom they just didn't even think about race with Dudley. By all means, think what you want but don't spout it as fact or get mad at other interpretations unless you've got something official.

If it's "light hearted" why even analyze it to this level of scrutiny.

This reminds me of people going out of their way to prove that Poison isn't transgender.

Here's a pic of Dudley's alternate costume in Street Fighter x Tekken:
sfxtk_cos_01.jpg

That sure as heck looks like a black dude to me.
That's a Tiger Jackson crossover costume. The crossover costumes are just for fun. Elena is dressed like Julia in that same picture, but she certainly isn't a Native American.

Only on the internet has Dudley ever been even remotely considered to not being Black, lol/smh.

What is "black" in your definition? Dudley's ethnicity isn't ever addressed in canon. He could be British of African, South Asian or Middle Eastern descent. Dudley could be mixed race, which was always my interpretation -- he's depicted with blue eyes and is clearly not "first generation" given his backstory in III and impeccable upperclass Britishesque mannerisms. Capcom's recent equating of him with Freddie Mercury makes me want to lean towards "British of Middle Eastern or South Asian descent," but what does it matter? He's a badass melange of "gentleman boxer" with the UK's wide population of people of color. Pretty damn forward-thinking, especially considering that Akiman conceived him in the mid-90s.

People sure are getting super salty at the very idea of Dudley being indian. He could even be mixed or many other races. You cant just judge a race or origin based on only color.

Because there are soo many Indian characters in the game who aren't stereotypical at all ( Dhalsim can breathe fire because he ate hot curry , I am half-expecting this to be his V-trigger or something like birdie rofl )

Is this guy supposed to look like Dudley? For starters, Dudley has a very deliberately thin, long, and pointy nose. Lennox Lewis has a broad, rounder nose. What characteristics do they share in your opinion, other than skin color?

Balrog obviously looks like Tyson, and his original name gives it away completely. But just because a black guy was a boxing champ at the time when Dudley was created doesn't mean Dudley was based on him, unless you have additional evidence from Capcom themselves.

I'm not even trying to argue Dudley isn't black, because I don't give a shit, but you're just citing completely illusory correlations as far as I can tell.

Except for Birdie. That guy is black.

Sorry dudes. Simplest answer is usually the right answer

and after posting lone dragon's post it's just hard for me to take this seriously anymore.
