Also, one thing I kinda wish happened in the story
is Snake being a little suspicious about Ocelot. Snake hasn't seen Ocelot since the 60's, right? And Ocelot was trying to kill him back then. Then all of a sudden he's on a horse and building you back up? That was a moment where I wish Snake WASN'T silent. That's just not something you ignore... especially considering Ocelot is the Boss's biological son. How do you just leave that hanging? Does Boss just not know it's Adamska? Anyway, I've only completed the story up to mission 3, so maybe they cover this in the tapes or something later on.

No tapes necessary, we know after MGS3 that BB and Ocelot were two of the original founders of the Patriots. They had a LOT of interaction after MGS3.

Technically, that complaint can be lobbied at GTA and other open-world titles as well.

Only open world game I can think of with that issue is Souls games. I've only played(roommate's copy) for about three hours, how long until we can unlock tranq snipers and stuff?

Well they face motion captured/scanned Sutherland, Joosten and Baker so no surprise their characters look like them.

I think Ocelot looks good.
Did they actually scan Sutherland for Snake's model? Because they don't look alike at all compared to Ocelot/Troy & Stephanie/Quiet.

Snake looks weird because 90% of the time he's covered in 500% of his own blood all the time.

Of course it made DD's attraction to Snake instantly understandable.
Anybody else playing the PC version get weird FPS drops and hangs in the Emblem Editing screen?
The game runs perfectly fine UNLESS I go to one of the "Word Lists" in the "Edit Emblem" screen.

Scrolling through the list of "Word Parts" drops the game to 1-2 FPS and it takes 5-10 seconds to switch between tabs or scroll between items.

Yeah, this happened to me. I'm not sure what it was, but fortunately it went away the second I left that menu.

Then tapes should absolutely be necessary, right? It's not something that happened during the gameplay of either Peace Walker or Phantom Pain. If it's backstory, I wish the game was a little clearer about it.

I don't get it. What the hell at Medical Platform?! Is Snake Hallucinating? Is Kojima retconning again?

Seriously. How is she alive? Can someone explain to me please...
You get a new camera angle that clearly shows that the explosion wasn't Paz blowing up, but a rocket from the adjacent helicopter. Hence , 'She hit the water hard, but...."

Yeah, I don't mind his look. In the prequel games, he looked very young. In the Solid Snake era he looks old. Here he looks like an adult, and I'm fine with it.

I think the oddness comes from Troy's full performance too

face, voice, but mostly just the attitude change

he's just a friendly dude with a friendly face. he never was that

it's not terribly bothering me or anything, I just found it weird

HA, in your face Mission 16! After pulling my hair out with it, I S-ranked that SOB!
Had a real plan: took D-walker with me, grab the intel from the small camp, just tranqin everyone. Then hightail it to the airport where the truck is waiting on escorts. Leave the D-walker just outside the gates and jump over the fence where the truck is. Trigger the cut scene, get spotted, throw smokes and fulton the truck away. Run like hell to D-walker and shove its gatling gun in their face. Just a little shy of ten minutes

This is a good game, but not a good Metal Gear Solid game.

Just my opinion, but I think a Metal Gear Solid game is defined by how heavy Kojima's touch is on it. And Kojima's mark is all over the place in this one. Got no problems accepting it for feeling like Metal Gear. If I do have problems with it later on, it'll be about which choices Kojima makes.

Like, I didn't enjoy MGS4, but it was absolutely a Metal Gear game.

all faces have been slightly remodeled to fit their voice actors a lot more in this game

big boss looks a bit like kiefer, kaz like robin.. but with Ocelot it got kinda ridiculous

straight up Troy Baker face in there with no relation to what he looked like before at all

That's....dissapointing. Snake and Kaz look fine to me, but I don't think I'll ever get used to Ocelot in this game. One thing I've always loved is seeing him age throughout the series and how each stage was so well developed. Like you can still see MGS3 Ocelot even in MGS4 Ocelot. And I think that's so important too, because in many ways Ocelot is the true main character of all of MGS.

But this is a serious misstep in that. He doesn't look like Ocelot at all. Such an odd and dissapointing choice for Kojima. Guess he just got caught up in wanting to make the game look more holywood, considering Ocelot is a face you see a lot.

4.4 hours in and I'm only on the 4th mission, the Soviet commander extraction from all the demos they showed

Was sneaking in and a sandstorm rolled in, allowing me to easily infiltrate. Yeah, I love this game

Maybe I'm stupid too, but why did you feel that way? Wasn't that just the John Doe name they gave Big Boss when he was in the hospital?

It never dawned on me that "come to" is what you would say someone who was recovering consciousness was doing. From there I figured out "V" was a code name.

I thought it was more speaking of the game's release, which I guess is another interpretation but not why those words were used.

I feel like MGSV is a harsh wakeup call for a lot of people, especially those who ignored or dismissed Peace Walker for so long.
I thought PW was weird when I first played it but then the Monster Hunter-ish vibes and the base building aspect of it all started to click and I got use to it, so MGSV being a progression of that feels pretty natural to me.

Casettes are just codec conversations you can listen to at any time, with extra stuff thrown in.
The Motherbase stuff isn't very Metal Gear, but then again we always knew at some point Big Boss's story had to be about building Outer Heaven and less about "ONE MAN SNEAK MISSION, EQUIPMENT OSP"

I get the complaints, and I did love the insane plotdump cutscenes of prior games, I guess I just don't miss them, especially when the game plays so well.

The gameplay part of MGS5 is really good. The pre-engagement scouting and infiltrating, the various methods you can utilize, the wonderful control interface, ya buddies, running to the helicopter blasting "Maneater". All at 60fps with super-clean image quality. That's all dope as fuck.

But everything around it is kinda...not great? It's a bit of a failure of an open world. Like I mentioned before, traversal just sucks ass. Getting from one place to the other is a chore. There are closed off, blocked off paths everywhere. Its not particularly visually interesting, no memorable monuments to guide your eye, or NPCs or anything.

People complain with "what do you want, another UbiSoft collectathon", and I mean...the whole fuckin' game is a collectathon anyway lol. You collect black carrots and golden flowers, and minerals and resources, and soldiers and animals, and blueprints and weapons, and hostages and intel and its all part of this weird ass micromanage minigame. You go back to base, take a shower, realize that's jack all to do here besides smack your soldiers around and some boring target ranges, then fly back to the non-sandbox sandbox.

Maybe if there was any kind of narrative momentum, that could help in spades. All the other open worlds always have a "main path" you can get back to when you feel like progressing the game, but half of the missions in PP you do feel like filler. Which doesnt speak well to the Side-Ops which are like, ACTUAL filler, going back to the same outposts and camps the main missions already covered(or vice versa).

IDK its like...its like they didn't really understand the whole "open world game" thing? And they tried to marry various MGS concepts to an genre they clearly aren't familiar with and it doesn't all work?

None of this shit really matters when you're at the cool locations and experimenting/infiltrating/shooting/sneaking/blasting music, but there's a LOT of time spent in this game doing stuff that's not exactly great. That doesn't really feel like MGS, but some weird Splinter Cell/MGS/Monster Hunter...hybrid...thing.

Did they actually scan Sutherland for Snake's model? Because they don't look alike at all compared to Ocelot/Troy & Stephanie/Quiet.

They used his face to 'track' the movements of Snakes face, and for obvious they couldn't make him look exactly like Keifer because he's already an established character. Like for Huey they probably used someone other than Christopher Randolph for motion capture.

I also thought one of its meanings was "what have things come to". Like, "jesus, where'd it all go so wrong?"

Man this game is great but It's also the hardest game for me in the franchise. So tough to do a clean mission. I've put In a lot of time but still only like 4 main missions in!

I do think I'm getting better....

I think the game is still Kojima as hell. There's so many silly kind of over the top parallels to spiritual shit going on.

Big Boss having sharpnel on his head that looks like horns, him saying he's already a demon beyond hell, and (outer) heaven is not the place for him.

it's in yo face

I also thought one of its meanings was "what have things come to". Like, "jesus, where'd it all go so wrong?"

That is another way to look at it too. Clever use of words.

Question about the first mission:

while Ocelot is briefing you on the mission, he estimates that Miller only has ~3 days left or something. Does this translate into a real time limit for the mission? I kinda want to explore a bit and experiment with night/day soldier patterns but not if it will end the mission for me.

Big Boss tells you in MGS4's epilogue.

Can you disarm enemies with CQC in this still?
Yes

Yea I know he did the facial capture I was just wondering if they had used scans of him for the actual model. Erik Brown did the body capture btw. Joonsten seems to be the only one who did all three that being facial, body and voice.

I got this awesome assault rifle with a rad scope. Once I actually started using it all engagements went from hour-long sneaking affairs to two minute sniper-sprees.

I am a Wolf. Perhaps even a White Wolf.
Yeah, you hold LT after punching them a bit and you'll grab their gun.

What's the keyboard equivalent of LT?

There's so many commands...

Bullet to the head from 50 yards away is the only way to go. Why put yourself at risk getting up close and personal?

Because making guards lie down is the most effective strategy for a non lethal run. They never get up unless they're found or an alert is called.

I'm in a bind. I'm on mission 30 and I want to finish because the story is starting to actually ramp up and if I don't now no doubt someone will spoil it for me. But I'm worried I'm starting to burn out. The issues I had before are starting actually hinder my enjoyment in a big way. The game wants me to play in an open fashion because its an open world game but then puts loads of barriers and invisible walls in the way.

I mean what happened to this?

I'll take collecting materials, blueprints and recruits that actually benefit me in expanding my motherbase as well as leveling it up over feathers and flags aka useless collectibles that have no use in terms of gameplay and narrative. The only thing I'm not sure of is the animals, don't know if catching them does any good other than just making yourself a zoo.

Is anyone else actually really impressed with the direction they've taken Big Boss? Like, I can't fully explain it but the way he's acted both through Keifer's VA and his expressions and actions, it just feels like such a significant step up from a lot of other games.

I actually like the quiet, simpleton approach. I just can't stand Kiefer Sutherland's VA.

Loving the game though.

I'm gonna try fulton extracting people when I'm at max capacity, I remember if you did that in Peace Walker Kaz would call you and he'd basically be like "STOP WE'RE OVER CROWDED HERE" and you'd hear a bunch of people screaming in the background and it would sound like kaz gets overrun by the crowd before it cuts out.

What's the keyboard equivalent of LT?

Right click

There's so many commands...

It's the button that makes you aim your gun. You just take their gun and aim it instead.

I want to eat those animals, damn it!

Just so I can hear Snake critique food.

"DELICIOUS!"

"I WANT SOME MORE!"

i asked before i went to bed, gonna try again. im afraid of setting foot in spoilers thread to ask.

how do you get the music tape for
snake eater
? i just left
Afghanistan
and didn't get it.

So I completed ground zero main objectiv, and savec Kojima with a S rank. Saved my data for transfer. all went well. I boot Phantom Pain up, connect to server, all swell and i download the saved data from Ground Zero. All went well.

It is said that kojima transfers to PP, i visit my main base and he is no where to be found. When i check the list of all people hired at mother base. He is not in that list... So what did i do wrong...

Nothing's wrong. He'll show up after you complete your first mainline mission, I think.

The guys you saved trickle back in from GZ over time.
