A particular prisoner extraction side-op was giving me tons of trouble last night. The prisoner was heavily guarded and after a few failed stealth attempts I decided to go in loud. I started lobbing grenades at the satellite dishes, taking out the snipers, and hopping in an AA gun to take down the base. I tried this like five times and still no success. Ugh. So then I decide to try another time of day. Smoked that Phantom Cigar 'till morning and wound up perfectly aligning my infiltration with a shift change. In and out without being seen. Felt so good.

I'm going to add some custom songs for the helicopter. Thinking Angel of Death or Piece by Piece by Slayer, or No Remorse and For Whom The Bell Tolls by Metallica would be quite fitting. Maybe Nitro by Dick Dale.

Anybody uses the companion app for this? And more importantly, does it work with the PC version?

No it doesn't work with the PC version and probably never will. Sucks big balls.

Also this game.

Developed the sleep grenade and thought awe yiss, but not long after spamming it, they decide to wear gas masks.

Also is there a way to cook the grenades? I don't like how they all have enough time to run away.

So I'm guessing stealing the cassette tapes increases their ability to hear you right? I haven't been grabbing them but I'd like to (that's what he said)

I see. So there's no need to actually stay in the open world? You can just go from mission to mission with no need to travel by foot?

Yeah, if you want. Side ops are easiest to session while staying in the open world, but Main Missions are usually more locked to deployment points.

You can do it either way. It's a choice. I do it case-by-case.

- Fly in by chopper/run in by foot
- extract by chopper/extract by travelling out the zone

Is this game OK to jump right in if you know nothing about the MGS series? The stealth aspect interests me and I'm tempted to buy it, however, the last one I played was Snake Eater back in the day!

You'll miss out on a lot, but still have a great time. To get the full enjoyment out of it, you'd need to play Metal Gear Solid 3, Peace Walker, and Ground Zeroes first. But that's a big ask, as the first two are big games in their own right.

You could watch the videos somebody on YouTube made, that compile all the cutscenes and important gameplay segements to create "movie" versions:

Metal Gear Solid 3

Peace Walker

Ground Zeroes

Of course, all of these games are great, and well worth playing, but of course it's understandable to want to jump into the new one that everybody else is enjoying.

At the very least, play Ground Zeroes, and read the "Background" file from the main menu before playing. You can do that, and then beat Ground Zeroes in a couple of hours, and it will give you all the basic information you need.

Yeah, loud music playing can mask your actions. I usually deal with soldiers before taking tape because it gives added audio cover.

I stole one from behind a guy last night and he didn't notice. He was literally three feet away.

Edit: Oh, I misunderstood.

But is there any incentive to stay in the open world and explore? Like, do you find missions you wouldn't be able to access from the menu?

if there is I want to know so I can be Batman with smoke grenades. Usually they work but I have to throw one, then another at where the soldiers run off to. It's not as cool.

I've barely scratched the surface, but this game is insane. So many options for stealth.

During the one mission the soldier breached and cleared a room they thought I was in. That was pretty badass.

What?

They're wearing gas masks because you were spamming the sleep grenades.

throw it in the air and get quiet to shoot the grenade, is the only way work around to cook grenades I found,

I accidentally ran into mission 11 when going toward a side ops in the middle of nowhere, when the latest mission I completed was either 8 or 9.

They're wearing gas masks because you were spamming the sleep grenades.

I know, it's absolutely brilliant. And I like how you can sabotage their flashlight, NVG and helmet supplies.

One of the best parts about this game. Forces you to look for alternatives instead of spamming the same attack the whole time.

I've noticed a lot more of my guards wearing helmets as a result of me headshotting sleep darts the entire game. Now I have to either do take-downs or use smoke grenades.

Fantastic design.

There are lots of useful things you can do to bases in the open world which will affect them during missions (that might be a bad idea to do during missions).

Eg:

- steal invoices so you can fast travel between bases
- destroy anti-air towers/radio communications dishes so that bases can't radio each other during missions, and you can call the chopper in to those bases
- find secret routes/good tactical options
- find diamonds/herbs etc without the pressure of being on a mission

But no, I don't think you can find new missions by just exploring the open world. I'm pretty sure, however, that side ops can unlock other important side-ops. And certain important side-ops can unlock new Episodes.

Edit: oh, haha, I'm talking a bit of shit. You can find other missions in the open world. But this doesn't happen too often and the game would eventually put them on your mission list like normal anyway. That is, they're not exclusive to free roam.

Any idea how to speak to
Quiet
once you unlock the
Cover Fire
option? It occupies the space that you use to say
her name, and it shows you her location.
Great for getting a sense of
her location in a pinch.

I also want to get a great view of
her wonderful thumbs up.

How do you get more answers out of guards? Do I have to do something to them or can I do something with Snake so he can get more answers out of them?

Same here. Was awesome. Got me wondering how else you would come across that episode.

Can anyone tell me why I'd choose to bring Quiet on a mission instead of D-Dog? D-Dog is broken as fuck. Why aren't these dudes suspicious of this big ass wolf happily strolling around their bases?

He has an eye patch. That has to be a red flag.

So my Malak was killed in presumably one of those stupid violent team members... I was just wondering, can you redo his mission to recruit him again? Or is there another Anesthesia Specialist in the game?

Just sneaked behind a tank in alert status and fultoned it. Feels wrong. Feels good.

Fulton is OP.

I remember from older videos that you could fulton conscious soldiers provided you sneak up behind them, I don't see that option anymore. That would have been amazing.

Do the anti-air towers stay destroyed? Are are they there again after you finished a mission?

As far I know and have noticed they either spill the beans or they don't, seems to be RNG based. Knocking them out again and waking them up also won't affect it, beans are spilled by soldier X or not.

Wolf with full battle armor and eyepatch, nothing strange about that.

But you would probably get access to this mission anyway via menu/chopter, no?

Sorry about this many questions, it's just that it's a little weird to me that an open world game would be structured in a way that it doesn't feel at all like it's open world, if you want. Not sure if this is good or bad, but I thought it was something more like Red Dead Redemption (or any other traditional open world for that matter), that has you traveling the world, finding stuff on your way to your next mission, etc. Open world games usually force you to explore, in a way, and it seems that isn't the case in MGSV.

I only played the game for like 3 hours so I couldn't get a good feel of how it all works yet.

Now that online is back on I purchased my first FOB and wow, I didn't know you could build an entire upgraded second mother base for free! Also you get mb coins for logging in.

You can send Quiet to scout encampents in advance, you can take out entire camps very easily as well, and she occasionally leaves ammo for you to pick up, and she can grab attention away from certain areas if you order her to shoot with an unsilenced weapon, with a silenced weapon she can take out people just by you going near them with the cover fire command.

Just finished Mission 6 last night. I was amazed by the level design in that one. Absolutely incredible! It's my favorite mission so far.

The only way I've seen to do this is by holding them up first and getting them to "lie down" you can them fulton them while concious but they tend to scream quite a lot.

I'd add War Ensemble by Slayer as well that already killer list!

I recently did a mission against a higher class of soldier.

From 50 yards away one of them spotted me. No alert, but he was instantly like, 'Something's over there!' And all 8 guys in the base immediately scuttled into groups of two or three, took up observation positions, and three of them immediately started running for where I had been.

They didn't find me, but fuck it was intense, the AI was just mindblowing.

When you max his bond you can
customise
him and give him a
fake eye and change his colour
if you want to pretend he's a normal wolf dog.

How do you get them to lie down froma hold up?
Also sometimes when I get spotted and enter reflex mode I get a prompt to press L2, is it for holding them up ? I mean is it possible to hold someone up after being spotted already?

I have close to 40 hours in the game and I don't know anything about this lol, I just Sam Fisher my way in and out all the time.

Accidentally stumbled on Mission 11 while playing as some random mercenary trying to do a side-ops. I thought when it kicked in, it would load in Big Boss's model but nope, random merc in the mission.

What a surprise though, stumbling onto the mission.

Approach from behind with your weapon drawn and once they drop their gun interrogate them as you would when holding them (L1 then highlight "lie down"... or is it "get down"?).

So, what are my odds of not being completely lost playing MGSV when I only have a pretty tangential understanding of what happened in Peace Walker?

So, if you download your GZ file you get to use the Raiden and 32-bit Solid Snake/Gray Fox skins, right? Does anyone know at what point in the game that opens up?

I really want to suplex people as Raiden. :(
