Anyone else think it's a huge stretch that venom is able to do everything that he does?

Sorta, but then I sort of think of it as being a bit meta and even if Venom shouldn't be able to do the things he's doing...on a meta-level he's being controlled by the player and what he does and the legend built around FauxBigBoss is a result of our actions...sooooooo...it's a stretch but then what if someone is really shit at the game and shoots the hell out of everything or just dies an awful lot/bails on missions/calls in airstrikes every op etc?

Yes. but no. but yes.

It is, but the game allows you to play as any random guy in your base that can also do everything V/BB does.

Basically, the game doesn't give a fuck about BB. Totally devalues him as a character and as a soldier.

Well if you think about it, a lot of things that Big Boss did which made him the legend that he became was because he was in a situation that favoured him. The legend started after he defeated Boss, but she let herself get defeated and killed, the stuff we do in this game as Venom Snake is not what he did. The stuff he did in Peace Walker, it was mostly Kaz who made them that big and successful, which gave way for BB to become even more legendary. He did defeat the Cobra unit and also Shagohod/Volgin...but with the help of Eva.

I don't understand why Quiet never writes or tries to communicate to others in the other language (like she did in her ending) or like learn a language...or get a translator for her alternate language.

Well I guess I do understand why, it's just cause fuck you that's why....lol

I think it was explained in her last mission. She wasn't sure if she still wanted revenge on Snake, and telling them the reason why she couldn't talk might ruin her chances at it if she choose to proceed. Still seems pretty thin to me but eh.

Yes, but the game kind of tries to explain this. If you get the cutscene where the DD soldiers fight each other, Ocelot says they'll be doing chores as a punishment. V says their CQC isn't up to par, and that he'll give them a training "you'll never forget".

So presumably BB trained V with CQC prior to GZ, and, he never forgot it.

Lame but that's that.

Just to confirm: no way to get Quiet back after beating the game? Had some S-Rank related plans for her postgame...

Also, I'm confused about the whole split thing. Miller/Ocelot say The Real Big Boss goes off the create Outer Heaven in Secret, with Venom in charge of Diamond Dogs. Then it states in the timeline that Solid kills the Venom first, then The Real Big Boss. But isn't the bad guy faction in Metal Gear 1 called Outer Heaven? Shouldn't it be Diamond Dogs, or shouldn't Solid kill The Real Big Boss first, then Venom (not sure what the bad guys in MG2 are called).

Outer Heaven has become more of a concept than a place. Zanzibarland was a state where mecenaries and soldiers would not be exploited by governments. MGF, Diamond Dogs, Outer Heaven and Zanzibarland are all just the same concept in different forms.

Well BB does say that VS was the best man they had.

I don't know what's worse: that this not a super-great explanation for Kojima's wacky antics or that it more or less satisfied me. Not blaming you or anything -- it's probably true.

Plus it's no big deal, why couldn't BB manage to train someone to be a bad ass? We have Gray Fox and Raiden who could do anything Snake could or more.

I wonder if MGSV is going to win GOTY here, even with all the incoming backlash.

Was this bad with MGS4 back in the day?

Probably. But it's not like it doesn't deserve it, MGSV IS a great game. Far from perfect and from the 10s it got, but still great, rich of content, fun, balanced in the gameplay, visually pleasing. It will be hard against all the other entries, but MGSV has its big chances.

I don't know about MGS4, I wasn't here, but as far as I can tell the "haters", let's call them this way, arrived later with time.

It should do. It has it's flaws (mainly mission structure and the helicopter situation), but the gameplay is incredible. It plays like an absolute dream. The greatest contender so far would probably be The Witcher 3, and that's a game that (for me) doesn't play nearly as well.

The story will turn some people away, and while I think it's disappointing, It doesn't hugely detract from the amazing experience.

having bloodborne around and expecting the exp later this year i really doubt it.

imo this metal gear it's like a splinter cell, all missions and no story.

I have high expectation from Fallout 4...it's the only game along with the already released Witcher 3 that will stand a chance against MGS5 this year (I don't think Bloodborne will be preferred over these three in most cases). 2008 had MGS4 and Fallout 3 and (when counted together) they both end up winning pretty much everything.

Same year as Bloodborne and Witcher 3 plus how divisive/backlashy its going to be. I don't think so. MGS4 was a perfect place and time.

Probably some stiff competition with Witcher and Bloodborne and (maybe) Fallout, but we'll see.

You can't count on a repeat because MGSV is really the anti-MGS4. The people who loved MGS4 are probably not going to hold MGSV in nearly as high regard.

Personally, the 10s this game has been getting are a little shocking. But then, MGS4 is pretty overrated (at least if you go by metacritic) as well.

I concur. I mean, I don't want to discount someones experience, and there is plenty of well written reviews, but a lot of it reads like the latter half of the game was withheld from them...which it was.

20-30 hours in I could probably give this game a 10 myself. But the second half really sours everything.

I don't really feel the game is necessarily undeserving of 10s, as long as you don't do something silly (imo) and pretend 10 is perfect/flawless...I feel like the excellence (imo) of the gameplay outweighs the flaws of the story and minor flaws in the gameplay...I feel like Fallout 4 could be my GOTY but, as ever, I feel like unless Bethesda have ironed out all the bugs etc it'd be more of a GOTY when it's nice and stable etc.

TW3 could be a GOTY but for me it just doesn't play particularly well and I can't imagine that if I was to play it on PC that would change.

Edit: If anything would really detract from a 10 it would be the repeated missions, but they're such a tiny tiny part of the overall experience that...it's sort of a 9/10 but the gameplay makes it 10/10.

You really have to give to Sutherland for doing some of this stupid shit. I just unlocked the rocket arm, it's brilliant xD

Saying that, the biggest dick move from this game, is the fact quiet gets removed from being a buddy. I understand storywise, but for gameplay it's really annoying. She's the one that looks to have the most effort put in. Also, her stuff doesn't come cheap ;____;

TW3 is the most overrated game since GTAIV.

I just finished and somehow there being two Big Bosses twist didn't bug me that much, it fixed a rather silly aspect of canon that was never explained, and explains why Miller felt so betrayed.

Game totally should've told you you can just do Side Ops in order to advance the plot, thank god I discovered it on my own.

Alot of people are disappointed that we were tricked into thinking we would play as BB...but Big Boss, has always been an idea. Big Boss is a concept. There is Big Boss we play as in 3 and PW, but he doesnt live up to the idea and legend of BB.

What has been boiled into us since MGS is that Big Boss is something to strive for. Liquid wanted to emulate him, because having his Genes isnt enough. Passing in Big Bosses Memes is only part of it. Even Solidus wants to surpass Big Boss. Its something he strives for. The Scene doesnt matter, it shapes a person but even Big Boss wasnt fully shaped by operation snake eater, it wasnt until Peace Walkers events that he accepted the moniker. By then, the idea of Big Boss had already grown into something even greater.

And this game is the final knife into the wound. A character as you shape him, takes on the role of Big Boss. He does things youd expect the real Big Boss would do, until the reveal he is Big Boss all things considered. Big Boss is an idea. Like language it is something that varies between people. Big Boss is a warmonger, a traitor, a murderer, a leader, a soldier, a mentor. Its an idea Zero wanted to keep alive. He calls him a friend, but truth is it mightve been more of an obsession.

Thats my analysis of the plot. Big Boss is an idea. By Liquid, Solidus, Ocelot it was something to strive for. Solid Snake knew the truth and rejected the idea of Big Boss. He was just another murderer.

This game solidifies Solid Snake as a character whilst making his brothers look the fool.

To be honest, Kingdom of the Flies seems like they should have at least left it in the game as a twenty minute epilogue cutscene or something.

That was great.

"That's right. Don't blame yourself. Blame me."

Which part? The fact Snake "kills" Boss at the end of MG1 or the fact he somehow gets to come back and lead Foxhound?"

I agree, and I bet Miller is going to take the Big Boss title and pretend he's Big Boss at Foxhound. There's no way they are setting up him to be such a villain in this game, dressed up exactly like old BB was in the MG1 concept art (not just the trench coat, but the tie and all).

I'm getting the feeling if they do make an MG1 game, the Big Boss running Foxhound will be Miller. He says he'll use V and SS to get back at the real BB. Who knows. OH kind of ruins the BB name. When he's "back" in MG2, Miller would want him dead again, for real this time. He'd be trying to force BB out of hiding.

I finished the game the other day and the game is great but the story is such a big disappointment. I honesty can't say with this being the final game to the series that it left me with some closure. Cut story content, characters in the series were left out like Gray Fox, Naomi Hunter etc and we don't know what the real Big Boss was even up to. They played us like a damn fiddle!!!

How he did the FOXHOUND part was kind of alluded to in MGS4, but yeah they had never explained how he survived Outer Heaven exploding while also rescuing all hostages and guards in there after having recieved 10 rockets to the face. Now you can assume the real Boss just fulton'd everyone after realizing Venom died.

Ironically, the old possible explanation (that he survived with heavy injuries but was rebuilt with bionics) is made far more plausible now than it was then by MGSV introducing advanced bionic limbs existing over 10 years before MG1 happened.

I can't really stand by all the claims that MGSV's gameplay is amazing without the critical element I'd always dreaded might not make it in -- and indeed, it did not -- solid MGS-esque boss fights. There are like... almost none. No enemy unit to speak of (my biggest fear going into this game, and usually people would say, "no way, they just don't want to reveal them!" ...yeah right >_>) except for the Skull Unit, which, it had one good fight, but it just isn't the same. I know, I know, I'm thinking with the past MGS here. But truly, MGS has my favorite bosses in games, and... welp.

As for The Witcher 3, I don't know. I'll likely never know. Couldn't get into the previous entries and I don't even have a way to play either of them now so it doesn't matter. I just can't get into game series from "square three". I play games for their narrative and atmosphere and it always feels entirely off.

Jesus christ the car scene with skullface is so bad and awkward. especially once the music starts playing.

and then after that "such a lust for revenge. whooooooooo?!?" so dumb

That's the best line in the game. That line transcends metal gear. You can do it anywhere.

"Geralt...I have to tell you...WHOOOOOOOO?"

"The batman!? WHOOOOOOOOO is he?"

"You know Ellie, WHOOOOOOOOOO are the Last of Us."

To be honest, I think this highlights the biggest difference between Big Boss and Solid Snake. Big Boss eventually bought into his own hype by thinking that someone had to carry the torch of the legend of Big Boss, even despite all the assistance/help/convenience he got in the process. Alternatively, Solid acknowledges that he has gotten this far due to a combination of luck and skill, never buys into the legend, and merely tries to do what he can even up to MGS4.

I love how Skull Face gets literally carried away by his own soldiers mid-sentence in that scene. Like, it is so unintentionally hilarious.

Oh yea the whole time I thought that Snake should probably say something. It ended up being way too awkward. It's ok to have him speak less but he is almost a mute and that's just weird.

Wander Mo Base soldiers i side op 01-60, right? I've done all of them and gone back to Paz but no cutscene-y thingy is happening...(I have left Mother Base inbetween giving her photos etc)

Edit: FOUND IT

Second Edit: That's nasty as hell

Whoever said that whenever not-boss looks at the screen during the ride was like this...

...is a genius.

lets also have venom use an animation where he stares off into the distance at times as skull face peers into his very soul, unwavering

I just found out you can fix all the continuity issues of the game by blasting Killer Mike's "Big Beast" out of your helicopter 1,001 times in a row

Skull Face's "WHOOOOOOOOOOO" is honestly probably the funniest case of screaming at the sky I've seen in any media

Couldn't stop laughing the first time I saw it, couldn't stop laughing the second time either

He's not intentionally a mute, surely you can see how obvious it is that there's supposed to be a big back and forth with skull face, leading up to the epic music.

Konami clearly pulled the plug early financially, it shows...especially in that scene where he's a "mute"

Also, despite the story flaws, I'm in love with the game in regards to gameplay / mechanics. I'm just going back now and getting the various parasite abilities for my suit / from the bosses. Fun as hell.

EDIT: Also, quite literally one of the few single-player games in which AI partners of buddies are genuinely useful.

I wanted to comment "Venom Snake" as a joke, but probably better not to.
Yeah, I saw that and wondered if someone would say "the medic" because honestly, that's one kickass no-name dude. The guy goes through a whole lot of shit and explosions with a brain damaging, life threatening shrapnel in his skull.
