What did the events of the game contribute to the canon?
That there is another Snake better than Naked: Venom.

:)

See? It's all in what you wanted from the game. I got a sweet new interesting character in Venom... others viewed the game as losing a piece of BB, I see it was simply adding Venom and showing BB as a douche.

Also, on a very serious note: it added an entire new twist on the Snake, Zero, Patriots issue. It also at least tied up a few loose ends, like what happened to Strangelove, Paz, Chico, etc.

I'm also a fan of smaller bits of info like how Liquid and Psycho Mantis came to work together.

I'm not saying it's true most crucial damn game in the series. I'm simply saying it matters and a decently interesting story.

The whole parasite powers is ridiculous. Most players hate facing against the Skulls with their powers such as: Teleporting, shield, shield regeneration, rock throwing, and super speed. All this because of parasites? Not even Nanomachines can make the enemy that powerful. The MGS4 Vamp nanomachine retcon does not even come close. The frogs were based entirely on the SOP Nanomachines and they were chumps. There is no reason not to use parasites in the other games. Reason why it's not in the other games? Kojima didn't think of it at the time. He pulled it out of his ass.

That's really my biggest issue with the series as a whole. There was no concrete plan, outline, or history made for the series, ever, even when Ryan Payton was saying there was back in 2006 or 2007. It's just retcon on top of retcon with cool stuff thrown in that make no sense to ever be there. It's incredibly frustrating as a fan.

Parasites being precursors to nanomachines is not the problem.

Nanomachines were fairy dust, and once u believe in fairy dust - anything is possible!

Kojima made the mistake of EXPLAINING fairy dust (parasites) with PSEUDO KOJIMA ANIME SCIENCE with Code 'I'll put you to sleep' Talker's 1 billion cassette tapes creating some of the most dry and boring 'exposition' material MGS has ever had.

MGS4 bosses were terrible. The only good one is Crying Wolf.

Frogs were okay, Laughing Octopus was boring, Raven was good, Wolf was good, Mantis was whatever.

Vamp?? So good. Liquid Ocelot????

I like the attempts at real world explanations for fantasy elements in the series though.

You're doing things just as poorly, if not more so than whom you're lambasting.

You're essentially saying that "yeah its okay to not like the story but you're fukkin dumb if you don't and you must be blind"
False. I don't care if someone hates it... as long as they understand it. We literally just had people saying they didn't get the parasite stuff and it was worthless. So, if you didn't get the stuff, you missed out and shouldn't judge.

Now, if this was phrased as "I understand the parasite stuff was a precursor to nanomachines, but that whole thing was unnecessary," I wouldn't have made my initial post on the topic, explaining how the parasites tied in.

How doesn't this apply to Peace Walker and MGS3 coming after 1/2 then?

It does apply to Peace Walker. The reason why it doesn't apply much to MGS3 is because there wasn't much of a timeline before MGS3 was made. MGS3 established a timeline for MGS3 to MGS2.

MGS3 was enough to show Big Boss's decent to madness with the epilogue.

I honestly still don't know how to feel after V. I'm going to need some time to let this all sink in.

Replace MGS4 gif with a pissed off face and the add a pissed off face to MGS2 (cause I was intrigued and annoyed at the same time) and you have my reactions.

Up through chapter 1 and I think Phantom Pain has better story than MGS4 and Peace Walker. As far as gameplay/story together it's the best game in the series besides MGS1. Don't kill me but gameplay to cutscenes ratio was ridiculous in MGS 2-4. Better in MGS3 but the first 3 hours were brutal.

Of course chapter 2 could change my mind.

Where is your god now Ether Snake.

tl;dr:
indie dev trying to leech hype for his "PT-inspired" game. THEY PLAYED YOU LIKE A DAMN FIDDLE.

This may be true, but why should I believe it?

I'm pretty sure we're gonna be disappointed, but somehow don't believe a single word that site says. This seems like a quick website made to try and make everyone sad and angry before the countdown's over.

We'll see.

I like the attempts at real world explanations for fantasy elements in the series though.

Vamp was disappointing. Due to the mechanic change from MGS2 to MGS4, he was toned down a lot. He was a boss designed to quickly maneuver in tight small areas zipping around the place throwing knives at you. MGS4, he was so slow and the fighting arena was much bigger. As a result he was nerfed. MGS2 Vamp without cheese is vastly superior.

Liquid Ocelot fight is boring after you get over the fanservice. The mechanics was slow and clunky.

I'll say the Rex vs Ray was satisfying at least.

toasted the skulls in mission 29 with ease using d-walker. it was fun as hell too, skidding and sliding around at top speed while aiming backwards with the gattling gun.

on the subject of parasites, that sub-plot becomes more interesting on a repeated playthrough because you can see a bit more through the bullshit.

from what i gather, code talker was trying to find a way to cure cancer using the parasites because of the high cancer rate among the dine cause by uranium mining on their lands. at least i think that's part of it. he's also a nuclear weapons specialist because reasons.

From the little I remember from listening to those tapes, didn't he want to use the metallic archaea to eat all of the uranium dust from the mines?

Why should you believe the most obvious conclusion? Because it isn't an insane conspiracy theory?

Fuck this, I'm gonna go harass that head transplant doctor. He surely knows what is up about this having been linked to the game and Kojima's BFF after all.

Finished the story, was thoroughly entertained. The over the top negative reactions seem pretty overblown, but I'm in it for the B-movie spectacle and had no expectations or hopes for a clean bow on a convoluted narrative web that's been silly since FOXDIE. If anything I'm into Kojima fucking with his obsessive fanbase and introducing new questions, or at the very least just enjoying the ride.

The game ended up having just the right amount of Metal Gear flavor for me, the star of the show was rightfully the fantastic sandbox systems and not the self indulgent cutscenes and codec interruptions. I'm still fascinated by the way post game content was handled in Chapter 2, and while it wasn't 100% successful due to some inevitable pacing issues I get what they were going for and want to see more devs experiment with structure. And I definitely didn't feel like I needed another boss fight with Sahelanthropus at the end to make the experience feel complete, even if the way the game wraps up could have been fleshed out more.

Mentioned it in the cut content/DLC thread but I'd love to see a Director's Cut/FES-style version of the game eventually, it's a great game that deserves a chance to be even better, though it's likely a pipe dream given the realities of the development situation. Anyway I hope the conversation normalizes a bit once more folks finish and time heals the wounds of the disappointed, personally I'm still buzzing from the past week and it's been a long time since a game has done that to me.

Whatever happened with that headplant doctor? Probably recruited by ingsoc's shadow government.

That's where I am after chapter 1. Ready for chapter 2 to fuck with me. But already know major twist so I'm up for the stupid crap Kojima is gonna give me :) whole series is stupid and fun so I'm not as serious as you hardcore story fans.

What?

The worst is playing online, getting an invasion notification, and then being unable to defend your FOB because Konami's servers are such shit. Lost 30 A+ - S rank soldiers and 30000 fuel and common metal each. I can't even retaliate because it says someone else is regardless of when I try.

I'm never going online ever again. I do have a massive amount of plants I'm selling to get me back in the black.

Has anyone that's bothered by the twist just simply tell themselves that everything involving the twist (from the Truth mission to the Truth tapes) were all just a result of Big Boss hallucinating everything.

There, it's all fixed for most of you now. Big Boss went loopy... had a few hallucinations. Maybe the tape in the locker room in Outer Heaven is Big Boss' mind internalizing a reason for his inevitable defeat at the hands of Solid: "Uh... This isn't really me... ::looks in mirror:: This bitch must be a doppelgänger!"

::Leaves the locker room and loses a fight to Solid::

::comes to after MG1:: "Okay, now I am really Big Boss!"

Not any more crazy than the twist. Basically, Big Boss is a nut, you really play as BB during Phantom Pain, Ishamel was all in his head and just an apparition of the more fit/virile version of himself (his mind) that was leading him out of the hospital. The game ended with Huey being sent out to sea and BB saying goodbye to Quiet.

Done. I fixed it!
