those things that dont exist?
If you are prioritizing character diversity in playstyle, you're not going to be putting in two footsie-based rekka characters with command throws and full screen chicken wing-style attacks.

It's not that there's a "rekka" slot, it's that you are going to get 0 of Fei/Karin or 1 of Fei/Karin, but never 2.

Fei and Abel didn't make the cut on the OG SF4 16 together either.

When people say "defensive playstyle" what do they actually mean?
Zoning heavy, poking, eg; dhalsim or guile etc. Basically force the opponent to play your game. It's not as easy as it sounds. I feel like zoning takes a lot more skill and one wrong measurement in spacing can make you lose rounds. It's a game of patience for both players and requires good thinking to beat a zoning opponent. If you ever play against good zoners like Arturo or dieminion you will know what I am talking about.

But we've seen them already 😠
There are 3 left.

I really do help we get C Viper before 2017 though. Now that Vega's in there aren't many characters left that I really want, I think she's one of them.

My dream 2016 DLC characters (if not already there) would probably be:
Sagat
Dhalsim
C. Viper
Sakura (Dark)
Seth
Urien
Gill

Blanka will get in at some point but if we get Gief/Sim/Sagat I think I'm good on 2 characters.

Basing this off the win quotes, the story so far:

Ryu is doing his training and Chun Li is doing her police work as usual. Cammy is still with Red Delta (duh). Birdie is just wandering around and Mika is continuing her wrestling career (possibly with Karin's help, which is canon from one of the official books long ago). Ken is getting back into fighting, I guess.

Bison is aging rapidly, or is just flat out old. Or maybe his body is decaying in general. Who knows? Nash was resurrected to eliminate him and people related to Shadaloo, so the Illuminati isn't on the same side.

Necili is supposedly going around doing an Ogre from Tekken - looking for powerful souls to consume and get stronger. Bison is keeping tabs on him - either he created him so he could have a new body or he found out about him and wants to switch over.

Rashid's friend is being held captive by Bison, possibly to feed to Necili.

So basically, I'm betting Bison will switch over to Necili and their fusion will be the final boss of the game. Which will be some suped up version of his Trigger.

I feel like every character in the game so far with the exception of Necali and R.Mika (don't know enough about Rashid) can be played that way

Not just popularity but playstyle and importance to the story which is Shadaloo vs Illumanati.

Juri has the most going for her.

Unique playstyle, popularity and importance to story.

But at the same time, I just can't see any of the SFIV cast making the base roster at this point. At least Alex & Urien have a source that have proven themselves in the past helping their chances. Though I do agree on Shadaloo vs. Illuminati being the basis of the story for this gme.

Yeah. Pretty positive Urien/Alex will be in the game. Juri will probably be one of the first DLC.

So far all the characters looks like they can be played that way.
Well, yeah. It's a playstyle, not a character style. Some characters are better at defensive play than others, though. Bison and Ryu are the best defensive characters right now, because their V-Skills provide unique punish opportunities, and Bison has a lot of counterattack moves.

On the other hand, Nash has weak defensive tools. He should primarily be played as an offensive character, but he can be played defensively if the player chooses.

Basically, defensive play is a player choice, but some characters excel at the role more than others.

Yeah Nash has shit defensive options mainly cause his antiair options aren't strong. I agree with you.

Guile.Dhalsim.Remy.

I'm saying there's characters in the game right now who have the options but also have additional options on top of that. If you choose to play defensively your playstyle will be represented by nearly the entire cast so far.

Characters like Guile/Sim/Honda end up being the characters who push low-level players away the most because they don't understand how to deal with them. It's why they were toned down repeatedly after their SSF4 heydey (especially in AE, which gutted a lot of them in favor of rushdown chars.) It's the same reason mono-counter-spell based decks in MTG have been sent to the dumpster in MTG - even if the deck's not OP, it feels that way to players who can't fight against it.

We're not seeing dedicated wall/zoning characters so far in SF5 and I kinda suspect we won't be seeing them for a long time, if a tall, due to all the system mechanics punishing keep-away tactics.

You can understand why that is disparaging to many who are currently discussing the game here and elsewhere on the internet though - the most invested of the FGC who are either more than able or willing to learn how to be able to overcome such archetypes through strategy and training. Or do you just hope to be informative to those who may not understand a possible reason for current design decisions? (Mind you I think that's a good thing to inform but on the flip side I can totally sympathize with those who are disappointed).

The latter. I love Sim, but I get that they're doing what they feel they have to in order to retain as many players as possible. (DLC $ is going to be really important given their model.)

Not having characters like Sim won't stop shit players from being shit. I could pick Juri and hold down back for 3 minutes and a low level player would not be able to touch me aside from fireball chip, they'll just move on to complain about something else if they don't feel like learning the game.

Fuck Sim though, go die in a yoga fire you annoying fuck

I really like Sagat's gameplay in ultra. Very satisfying to play him at all ranges and style is pro-active defense/spacing with bursts of effective rushdown. I don't see any similar characters yet but I haven't played the beta.

This pretty much sums up my problem with chasing the Casuals too hard.

I'm super sad that I might not get characters I love because shitty players don't like fighting against them. I understand it, but I loathe the decision.

Oh why the 20th? Does Capcom have a booth or conference by then?
I think so. They released a schedule and it said new character reveal and demo. It's possible the reveal could have been on the 15th and the demo on the 20th though.

I'm just expecting the worst.

I think the 20th will feature SFV on Capcom's 'special stage' where they sit down with the game and Momochi for like an hour. It seems plausible to me that the reveal trailer would be on Sony's stream on the 15th and then the live gameplay breakdown on the 20th.

Mind linking to this please?
It'd be hilarious if on the 15th they just show the Rashid trailer XP
I wouldn't mind a gameplay system trailer though.

I really can't wait to see Guile. I hope he's early DLC and that we even see him in the story mode. His theme is just too perfect to not be used at a pivotal story moment, ya feel me?
