Yeah, this is true. If that's what people like, then more power to them. I'm not gonna lie, I gravitate towards attractive male characters, so I'm not gonna discount anyone's reasoning for liking who they like.

I do wonder though how many people would still be advocating for this alternate Abel design if we knew for sure if was an androgynous boy as opposed to a young female. When the design was first show, I saw a lot of "We missed out on a cute girl!" posts elsewhere.
It makes sense that people like more attractive designs I guess, but I'd appreciate more effort be put in female designs beyond pandering... Don't really want anymore femme fetales or young/school girls. At least Karin seems to have a more spunky personality I guess... It's about time we get a female grandmaster like character...

R. Mika da best
Darn tootin'! :D

Can't speak for anyone else but I'd play the original design either way :D
Bridget was one of my Guilty Gear crew and the 'surprise' had already been spoiled for me before I even saw the character. Doesn't bother me any at all. Cool characters are cool regardless of what's in their undies, it's just what I consider awesome isn't usually repped by boys much :3

When they first revealed the design I do remember them emphasizing that he was an androgynous boy so not sure how people was confused if they payed attention. Either way that design is vastly more interesting to me than what we got

Dat Stone Cold Stunner.

This is fact.

Weird mix up grapplers are the best.

I definitely want this too. I don't have any problems with sexy female characters, but there definitely is more room for a more varied female roster.

And on the flipside, I think we need more dudes that have their sex appeal in the forefront. When you see the reaction that "Hot Ryu" got, it's obvious that a market for this type of representation exists. (And to bring it back to Abel again, he could definitely be a part of that. Almost all his alternate costumes highlight his sex appeal, but they got largely ignored due to the general art direction of SFIV. Put those same outfits on him in SFV, and I think he'd be getting a lot more attention.)

It was a common misconception, as evident just in this thread.

But if that's what you guys would have prefered, then more power to you. As I said, people should like who they like, for whatever reason. I just think pitting these two Abels against each other does precious little, because if we got the scrapped Abel, he almost certainly would of played completely differently anyway. Same with the scrapped Rufus.

I'm thankful we for the Abel we got because I personally think he fills a niche that hasn't been strongly addressed in the series. Maybe we'll get the other design someday, but the ship has sailed for "Abel".

People constantly reducing character designs to just ‘pandering’ is getting tiresome. Reminds me of that quote from Mad Men where Don shuts down Peggy for claiming that an ad is successful because ‘sex sells’.

We don't know when they're going to make the announcement. If it's at Sony's conference then it'll happen in a a little over three hours from now. If not then it's most likely going to be revealed on the 19th on Capcom's own stream.

They're having a stream?
For all capcom stuff or just SF?

I'd be all for more awesome old female characters. It's rare you see an elder fighting female in games that isn't portrayed comically in some manner (oh god power instinct). That said, I'm not too keen on getting old myself yet so I don't know how compelled i'd be to actually play them :P

It was SF4's art style. Nobody came out of that well. Sausage fingers everywhere! XD

Sony event is later today/tonight, but Capcom will be streaming during the day like with most gameshows. There's a capcom cup event going on for SF4 so I think before that or during or something there have been rumors a character will be revealed (or maybe revealed tonight and shown in more detail later).

Something we can all agree on.

Now we have the potential for attractive dudes, so bring 'em on! Lets have Abel actually look like he was intended to!

Ahh ok, thanks for the clarification.

It'll be all of their stuff. I'd think that the reveal would be before the Capcom stream, because I just checked their schedule again and the Momochi stream where they mention a new character doesn't happen until the 20th. Which would mean that they'd be giving Japanese players less than a day to play as whoever they reveal since the 20th is the last day of TGS.

So...I fucking hate sf4. Went back to it today and, it sucks. The back dashes, the shitty buttons, the bullshit netcode, the robotic feel of the game.

It truly is a first outing game and it shows. Everything feels off and counter intuitive. And I can officially say focus attacks are fucking garbage to me now. I've always been on the fence but now I see it's just a stupid ass mechanic.

I find it funny that I consider SF4 one of the worst SFs, yet it was many people's first and the game that kinda kick started the second coming of fighting games. The bar must of been low.

I like FADC for combos, but focus fishing is the worst.. I'll be ahead of someone and I will get counter-hit focus crumpled into ultra... Thanks Ono..

Yeah, I went back today and had a similar reaction. Most of what I disliked about it has been removed in SFV. 2016 can't come soon enough.

Yeah, i always disliked it. Even quit from vanilla until AE. Was worried about sf5 until I saw and played it. Now I'm playing 3s and alpha on prep for 5 and remembering what I love about sf all over again.

Should play some omega mode in the meantime. It's a completely different game imo but it still has 4s movement

It's funny but before the Mika reveal I would often end up having little fits of scrabbling about the net for even the tiniest scrap of newcomer news, but since she was shown I've kind of fallen back into a contented lull. Now I have a grappler I'm happy to play as, I guess I'm fairly calm about whatever they reveal from this point on (in a good way) where-as before I was worried that Mika might not make the core and end up as DLC. I'll still be happy if Karen or Juri or whatnot make an appearance but now that there's finally someone on the roster I'm cool about the hint of panic has gone :P

They really need to release a Bearded Ryu figure.
I think they really missed an opportunity in not having this be his default outfit. It would of made an even bigger splash IMO. Classic Ryu is great, but that really would of said "This is the new Street Fighter."

I do hope we see some Hot Ryu merchandise, and more male sex appeal centric content/merch. How they handle Urien and Alex will be really telling.

But no other character besides Birdie is getting such a drastic visual change, so it would have been a total copout to be like "LOOK AT THIS NEW STREET FIGHTER but everyone else is basically the same sans birdie but who cares about him".

They're trying to strike the (difficult) balance of old and new. Move too far away from too many classic designs and it's not recognizably 'street fighter' but play it too safe and risk being stale/uninteresting. I think they're doing a pretty good job so far.

Tell that to 3S fans...

I agree and I've also seen that some people would just play as any character without thinking of how they play just because they're female but that's for another time I guess :)

This is a weird thing to complain about.

Yeah, my first impression of SF4 was that it sucked (and I was so very excited for it). After about 500 hrs of lying to myself, I quit between 2012 until Ultra released on PS4. My final impression is that it sucked.

This is such a cool character design, too bad it was completely killed off by SFIV awful models, the lack of any kind of emotion from him in the game helped too.

I loved 4, but then I hated it, but then I loved it during the Ultra phase, but now I'm just kind of whatever after playing SFV.

I don't think that 4 is a bad game at all. It has a lot of bullshit elements like focus attacks and backdashes, but it's not kusoge level garbage. Every time a SF game comes out, or even a fighter, people forget that due to the changes in systems, it's gonna come down to a personal preference. SF3 had the lack of fear from being in the corner like SF2 did, and of course, the parry system eliminated quite a few options for characters when it shouldn't have.

I ended up loving it despite all that, maybe moreso than 4 at the moment.

But SFV probably fits what I'm looking for in a 2D fighter the most. A balance of fundies and character variance without being too ridiculous on the latter like anime games get.

I like SFIV but I gotta agree Focus Attacks just suck and I'm glad they are gone (hopefully forever).

I don't think it's that drastic. No more than what they've done to Ken. And obviously it would of been very well received.

Not to mention there's other characters that really need to have their looks updated too that we've yet to see. They should of started with their poster boy.

It's not like there was a lot of opportunity for anyone to really show any kind of depth, particularly ones that have personality that aren't closely tied to their fighting style.

Hopefully the (presumably) expanded story mode in SFV will give the case more chances to shine beyond just their appearance.
