NeoGAF Drawing-a-Day Thread

oso_by_meibatsu-d988dlq.png

Been a while since I drew anything properly!
Original character. I got too lazy to shade so.. some flats and gradient overlays and a bit of rim lighting to convey my intent. lol

hey guys. Figured I'd ask here as it's drawing related lol.

My sister loves sketching and has asked me if I could buy her one of those digital pads and corresponding software. What's a good (~$200ish) set up for that?

you should ask here: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1010752 as well.

As far as tablets for drawing goes, I've only ever used Wacom stuff and they're great but your sister may have a bit of trouble with the disconnect that comes with digital drawing. The Wacom Intuos should be a solid beginner option though the size preference depends on you guys I suppose. As far as software goes... I can't help you much there >.>

I would default to any Wacom with at least 6x8 active area. I haven't tried cheaper alternatives yet, but Wacom makes a solid product that most people trust.

So the Intuos Pro Medium is the newest of the line, but a little pricey. Maybe try to find a medium Intuos 5, 4, or 3 iteration (I'm using a Intuos 3 right now). They usually come with decent bonus software, so she can get her toes wet on those. Right now it seems to come with Autodesk Sketchbook Express, trial of the latest Corel Painter, and Anime Studio. I think they all sound good and she can decide what to get when she gets more comfortable.

Wacom's current cheaper line of tablets run smaller but come with corresponding software for a beginner; the Wacom Intuos Art has Corel Painter Essentials 5, the Wacom Intuos Comic has Clip Studio Paint Pro and Anime Debut 10.
I have more bias toward Clip Studio Paint (which is similar to Paint Tool SAI, but more tools), so I think the Intuos Comic is the better deal. lol

Depends on what kind fo art your sister actually likes making though. is she more of a cartoonist? Illustrator? Painter?

I recently tried the Wacom Intuos S, Intuos Pro S, and Intuos Pro M. I kept the Intuos Pro M. The larger area is indeed more comfortable when drawing, as it allows you to use the range of movement of your elbow better, regardless of your display size. I'd also go with the Pro line because it's better resolution is indeed quite noticeable, but an Intuos M should work fine as well.

Apart from that general recommendation, size and resolution of the tablet should also depend on the size of your sister's display.

As for software, Photoshop, while the de-facto industry standard, can be quite complicated. Consider Sketchbook Pro or Manga Studio 5 as more painting-oriented alternatives. They also have some nice features that Photoshop does not, like perspective grids, better default brushes (Photoshop needs more customization or third-party brush sets), and auto-smoothing (Manga Studio 5 only).

I think former Intuos tablets used Bluetooth for wireless connection, which might have issues with some computers. The new ones use a dedicated USB dongle with a custom wireless protocol. I had no issues so far.

some more doodads/updates

hadn't realized I drew her without a belly button, partly cause her arm should be lower to cover it. Since I redrew it wrong in the initial sketch I just put a belly button thingy where I think it would logically be.

^ Never start off with "It's bad"!

I've been going through stuff at the moment, but getting back on track with some commissions. Someone's characters from an explicitly cheesy space opera they made with a friend.

I have a bunch of commissions of couples to do. Not looking forward to it. Don't ever want to do them again! I need to pick up my slack, I feel like I'm not giving my 243%.

It's been awhile since I've had any time to sit down and draw anything that wasn't for class :0

I'm going to try and start scanning in my sketchbook since that's where I will be doing most of my drawings this semester.

Not as bad as it could be. The one of the left I think looks straight. The kneeled Cammy's face looks really flat however.

Capella that's a digital drawing right?

yeah, the face on the kneeling one I botched in general. I'm thinking of trying to redraw it but bigger, I think my problem was that it was kinda small on the page.

In my defense... it is true :p

Also, that pic is awesome.

It will stay true so long as you believe it.

Also here lies a drawing in which i will dislike in the growing days.

i feel like clawing my brain out. And draw more things to get better. Like more shrapnel robo nipple tassels.

Themes from reddit's /r/SketchDaily from the yesterday and the day before.

I got to figure out how to paint/draw grass instead of relying on premade photoshop brushes.

on my journey to the most self indulgent comic i shall ever make.

I didnt get to finish the page within the day as I would have liked but whatever. there are so many mistakes, but there are so many shits i cannot give.

^Not the same physique but google "herb ritts fred" for some possible inspiration.

NSFW (it's just photography)

hmm yes. Will certainly be going in my folder for....reference... Thanks haha

I love how you render things.

I'm attempting to get back into personal things since it's been a while. Work got in the way and all...

Here are a couple things:

Just line work and a separate quick and dirty color job, about 2 hours.

This I did Thursday, about 1.5 hours :/

I feel inspired, so this is a good thing :)

Good to see you posting again! Digging your colours as usual.

cropped bit of my current speed paint commission since it's nsfw. I ended up getting realyl attached to this though and projected a lot of personal feelings onto it so I'm spending longer than I should on it. really...unfortunately I'll have to put an end to it tomorrow.

I was working on something just now to post with this comment, but photoshop just shut down on me, so I'm done for the night.

Edit:
Here is a commission I've been working on. These are dials used for tracking unit numbers.

Thank you :)
I'm always inspired by your colors as well. I love your choice of skin tones. They are quite unique.

I wanted to share one of my recent drawings. I don't know how I went from this
to this.

Wrinkles are terribly hard to draw. I said this was going to be my last drawing for a while, but I don't really want my last one to be as flawed as this one. This is probably the worst shading I've done since I started to take drawing seriously. The strokes I made are clearly visible especially the ones at the bottom that go outside the line. I fucked up the eyes when I decided to color them in, and I think the forehead's too big. I didn't do the photo justice.

Thanks man, and good luck with your commissions.

I haven't posted in a long while, but I've been doing little doodles and stuff here and there.
Today I wanted to post this:

To be honest, I started it yesterday, but most of the work was done today so I wanna think it was almost a one day thing! Done during breaks at work and a bit of extra time at home.

Good to see your stuff again. Always makes me want to attempt environments; then always remember I am too lazy.

Though I understand it can be upsetting sometimes when you feel like you haven't made progress, I can certainly see it myself. I can see better sense of control with your strokes, and your style is becoming more defined. Why will it be your last drawing for a while?

I finished this commission; full thing is on my tumblr since it is nsfw.

and did page 3

going into a downward mood towards my work again. Soon I will give up on caring again as usual. Can't be bothered with the mistakes I make on the pages...I just really cant.

I don't think I've drawn anything for a while! SAD! (Pet site commission inertia hell lol)

But here's this thing I did yesterday before work!

Sketch from around midnight

pinkupinkufsksph9.jpg

about 2 hours or 2 and a half. Not anything serious really...I feel like I've really been out of my element. And I'm frustrated that I'm really apathetic to all of it.

Cross post with inktober and art & farts

Impossible for me to do something everyday given my real 8-5 job as well as current projects but participating nonetheless whenever day I can:

Allen Walker and Yu Kanda from D Gray Man in Kill la Kill costumes and empowering posing

10/8/15: Birthday present

10/9-10/10: Neogaf free portrait

Cross post

**It’s funny how I can count how many times I’ve tried to digitally color, this is the 8th attempt. Still haven’t figured out hair but figured most everything else my preferred digital coloring style
