I still think it's nice that we're getting another central protagonist, like Yuri, who is in his twenties instead of yet another teenage discovery adventure. I'm not against them, but there's a bit too many of those.
Wrong game series. =P

Ok, I'm not kidding here when I say I can't think of one off the top of my head that came out recently. I guess Pokemon counts, and Bravely Default.

Considering Star Ocean, Claude was 19, Rena was 17 so I guess she counts. Fate was 19, and Ecchi was 21. Star Ocean games are generally the characters getting used to a different situation and discovering stuff, so i dont know if them being 19 counts as really a 'teenage discovery adventure' thing, since they'd do a lot of discovering no matter their age.

I don't know where the kids save the world jrpg meme came from. There's certainly a few of them, no doubt: Grandia, Grandia 3 i think.... Lunar: The Silver Star Story. Breath of Fire 3 had you do a quarter of the game as a kid, but you grew up. Breath of Fire 2 starts you out as a kid for 5 minutes. Suikoden 3 had Hugo, I guess he counts. I don't remember much of 4 and 5, but I enjoyed 3 the most. Shulk's like 20 in Xenoblade, right?

The most straight up blatant ones I can think of is Grandia and Breath of Fire 3. And those were amazing games.

Edit: Oh, Tales of Symphonia, the worst tales game. Maybe that popularized it?

I'm talking about JRPGs in general.

Even if I was talking about Star Ocean as a series specifically, Star Ocean and Tales are sister series anyway.
Well yes, but when it comes to Star Ocean the main character pair always has been variations of the same stereotype so far. In that context you're asking for too much. ;)

I just mean especially recently.

Trails of Cold Steel, although a fantastic game, follows a class of students at a military academy.

Valkyria Chronicles 2 was also a class of students at a military academy.

Final Fantasy Type-0 was also a class of students at a military academy.

The upcoming Tokyo Xanadu is school setting.

Persona 3/4/5 are school setting.

You know what I mean. I don't necessarily mean 'kids save the world' - in fact, Trails games are explicitly themed so you're just a small story in a larger meta-narrative with tons of stuff happening at the same time.

I'm not even against them. In fact, when executed well I love it. I just think there's a bit of a saturation.

They actually covered this in interviews, which is why I bring it up:

Dengeki points out that Star Ocean 5 protagonist Fidel Camus is 23 years old, which is a little bit on the older side when compared to other RPGs. They ask if there’s any kind of reason for this.

“Fidel is 23, and that is indeed a little older in comparison to the norm,” says producer Shuichi Kobayashi. “That said, there’s in fact a reason behind this.”

“Yes. The 23-year-old Fidel isn’t quite a youngster with no knowledge of the world, but at the same time, he isn’t an adult that has experienced the taste of the sweet and bitter things [in life],” adds lead programmer Yoshiharu Gotonda. “He’s beginning to establish himself, but he’s still in a growing process.”

“He’ll mature to a degree, and the Fidel with his own thoughts and feelings at the start will experience various encounters and farewells in the story of Star Ocean 5, as he grows. This will be one of the highlights of the game’s story,” Kobayashi says.

Her character design is pandering garbage. I guess i should be thankful there isn't a meracle 2.0

I'd kill for a Meracle 2.0. Everyone but Fiore seems to be human. At least SO4 had a bit of diversity in it's roster: Hella awesome cyborg, 3 humans, 3 space elves, Felpool, Star Ocean 3 was humans all around, Star Ocean 2 had two tetragenes(ehhhhhhh), one displaced as hell Felpool(I don't recall Leon ever being explained), and two space elves.

Oh and I guess Meracle 2.0 could wear a shirt or something, but I didn't care much. I was much happier about a younger character being basically the strongest in the game, which is one of my more favorite things to see.

Honestly, the whole "he's not a teenager" thing is still largely dependent on execution and how it plays with the team dynamic. Adol Christin is a teenager for a large part of the franchise, but because he's largely a silent protagonist, and that he's treated like a responsible adult by other NPCs regardless of his age, he never felt like he's a brat. It also helps that Ys isn't positioned as a coming-of-age story for a lot of youthful JRPGs where the trials and turbulence of being young are essential to the character development.

Based on the gameplay footage I guess this is how they'll arrange the menu art as you get more characters. Makes it a little harder to glance at information but it looks cool. :p

Designs in the back are pretty decent, not really liking any of the people up front.

SE if you're hearing this i will do literally anything for alternate costumes, please. Oh how i missed that from SO3.

Fuck I'll even become the biggest sellout and empty my wallet for DLC costumes, just do itttt

There is no context in which that design is not hot garbage.

Why is it garbage? Impossible_outfit? I don't think that just because it's sexy it suddenly becomes terrible.

I'll agree that there should be some equality with some dudes in an equally ridiculous outfit, but that doesn't make this design uninteresting.

I don't know how anyone could not care when it was an almost naked child

It doesn't make any sense. The rest of the characters are dressed like they are at least somewhat prepared for some adventuring. Hers just doesn't make much sense without having some Kojima-you'll-feel-ashamed-for-your-comments-about-Quiet-once-you-learn-the-truth level of BS reasoning.

What? Have you never played BOF3? More than half of the game has the protagonist as an adult. It's anything but children saving the world.

Parfait mentioned that in his post.

In fact in the very post you quoted he says exactly this

Breath of Fire 3 had you do a quarter of the game as a kid, but you grew up.

In the context of Star Ocean, while their was some children characters, None of the main characters fit the trope of teenage discovery.

Most of the games were more or less about a character getting marooned on planet that had less technology they were familiar with and trying to find a means to get back home (Star Ocean 2 and 3 fit this premise in this case). This also resulted in getting swept up in the problems of said planet. Those problems were usually the result of some other advanced technology group working behind the scenes.

The only game that was slightly different to the atypical setting for the first three Star Ocean games was Star Ocean 4 due to Edge's mission to find a suitable planet for Earth to colonize to because of unsuitable living conditions as a result of WWIII, and even then that doesn't deviate outside of that one particular thing.

If you are after sense you have come to the wrong series, my friend.

That was the funniest part, because no one at all ingame reacted to her outfit. I was more annoyed at the fact that her clothes were kind of a fashion disaster, and that she didn't wear shoes, rather than the amount of skin the make-believe catgirl showed.

Seriously put on some boots or something, for a good half hour i winced at watching her run around with nearly-bare feet on rocks and the like.

Lol :p

While i'm sure we'll all feel ashamed once we learn the truth of her outfit, what if she's magic and doesn't like most clothes and-

Honestly I don't even think it's a big deal. It's a funny outfit, and it's not stopping the game from being amazing. If character design bugged me negatively so much that it apparently affected how I view a game, I probably wouldn't play jrpgs.

Previous sentence i stated that, which is why i put it second. You still do a lot of stuff as a kid.

Thanos acquires the fully powered Infinity Gauntlet in The Avengers: Infinity War, but loses when all the superheroes team up together to stop him.
Blue haired guy is awesome. I bet he's a fist fighter. Then again SO2's fist fighter also fought with pharmaceuticals, so you never know what weapons these characters might have up their sleeve.

Fiore/Witch is obviously a Symbology user,

Victor/Blonde is the cool "alternate" swordsman a la Albel and Dias,

Girl to the right is likely an alt Symbology user who learns different spells than Fiore, or a hybrid character.

Green haired girl is hard to tell, but my bet is on ninja.

Fidel is obviously swordsman and Miki is a healer.

The girl with green hair interests me. I'd love a fighter similar to Nel from SO3.

Shame the other three girls are looks like Symbologists, though with the ability to field every character at the same time, there's really no need to worry about them being subpar in battle.

If the Blue Haired guy is similar at all to Cliff in SO3 (Since SO5 is apparently taking the most inspiration from), that would be awesome.

I would love to do those Hammer of Might + Fists of Fury combos all over again.

Also none of the characters seem to be wearing futuristic clothing, unless they are dressed down to fit in with the populace, like Fayt did in Star Ocean 3 for example, so out of the all the cast, I wonder which one is the space traveller that meets the medieval era folk.

I really hope there is alternate outfits that are less embarrassing for the witch. My god, what were the designer thinking? And the boob window on the female protag bothers me. The other green hair girl(?) looks good though.

So, party members, we have three that look great, three that look boring but not bad and one chick with crazy as hell clothes. I am okay with this.

Ever since the announcement, we’ve gotten a lot of comments on this character. It’s the green-haired mage. [Her outfit] is a little sexy. We showed off a screenshot of her character design earlier and ever since then, we’ve been inundated with comments and users making up their own designs and art. Akiman and myself have been very, very surprised, and we are very happy that the fans have taken to her.

Nothing embarrassing about it. Not everybody needs to be covered from top to toe. It's a JRPG, outlandish character designs are part of the charm and why I play them.

She seems to be more of a brawler/martial artists going by the short glimpse they gave of her in the E3 trailer

Awesome, female monk types are the best. Makes me wonder what blue haired big guy is now, though.

Having another futuristic weapon user like Opera would be awesome. Claude's Phase Gun was cool too, but, you know, beginning of the game and all...

I dunno why people make a big deal out of stuff like the witches outfit. She's the only one dressed like that anyway.

The devs saw the reaction that the sorceress from Dragon's Crown got and thought "Hmmm, I'd like some of that money." It's all free publicity in the end.

I'm pretty sure green-haired monk is the off-worlder/Earthling. She doesn't have the typical federation look (probably blending in with the populace) but there was this scene in the trailer:

Even if it's fine that the witch's outfit is sexy, it's aesthetically a disaster. Taking the human body and painting a checkered pattern over it looks terrible.
