Nothing embarrassing about it. Not everybody needs to be covered from top to toe. It's a JRPG, outlandish character designs are part of the charm and why I play them.
There's a difference between outlandish and dumb. Are you one who defend Quiet's design as well?

Well that difference is pretty subjective. I enjoy these designs. I think it's fun seeing things that you would never in real life through videogames. It's charming.

The reasoning behind Quiet's design was fucking stupid.

I still played every single mission with her in it even when I got the more realistic and better outfits.

It's okay to like something and at the same time admit it's either problematic, sexualizing a character or a fucking stupid design.

Green drill hair tit-witch is an awful design even in-line with the rest of the animefied world of SO5. But in my case, it's so awful that it amuses me as well as showing off her curves. I will more than likely play with that costume unless they give me one that is A. as amusing B. bad-ass or C. a better sexy. In almost every video game I don't care about realism in my designs or utilitarianism. I could give less of a fuck about whether it would work in real life.

You really don't need to reach with ways to defend this shit. We are complicated and complex humans, just like it even if it is garbage and admit it's garbage and go "But I'mma still play with her in it." I admit it, I like it cause of boobies and it's dumb in a funny way. I also donate to Anita Sarkeesian, pledge money on Kickstarter to games with women characters of varying body types/ethnicities/ages/sensible styles of dress and buy video games with strong female leads like Beyond Good and Evil (3 times now, fucking HD remasters), Remember Me, Life is Strange, Transistor or many others of all types. I can do both, it's entirely possible. People are multi-faceted and liking checkerboard drill-witch is just something you can do regardless of how bad it is.

I bet the blue-haired guy with the beard is going to be one of those typical JRPG characters who's in his mid-30s or so, but is treated like a pensioner that's mere weeks away from spending the rest of his days in a retirement home.

Forget the blue hair guy with facial hair. I bet even the protagonist is going to be called an old man or something. It's like a JRPG running gag now.

Pretty well-put. I want diversity and I put my money where my mouth is in that sense, but I also like campy designs and cheesecake as well. Not everything, but a certain amount is enjoyable.

Star Ocean 3 had a character that was 58 (Ardray) and was the complete opposite of this.

Star Ocean never really used the not even middle-aged slightly older character going on retirement trope.

Well, I don't doubt that he'll be referred to as "Ossan" a few times, but I do doubt that he'll be pigeonholed to that extent. At least I hope not.

Green hair witch is the kind of design that makes it so that you can't play these games in front of other people without looking like a weirdo.

Id rather they not

All the other art of the character looks fine, but the face on this one is just...what?

I mean...the body is completely fine, which just makes the facial structure even more strange.

Her side profile looked fairly good on the menu, but she does look a little derpy. That outfit hits all the right notes for me, though.

Not looking forward to two loli's after Star Ocean 4 but hopefully someone slapped around the voice director and told them nothing was ok about last time.

Loving the look of the main cast outside that, especially the artwork. Not one but two green haired girls, Square is just stealing my fanfiction at this point.

Yeesh, throwing that design in the middle of a group like this makes it stand out as a disaster even more. It's so unfitting and distracting. Is she supposed to be a chess champion or something? What a shame considering how good the rest of the characters look for a JRPG.

Aside of the stupid outfit... are those tails and wings fake?
God, what a mess of design.

I like to think of it as them coming from different places.

The entire thread when this game releases is going to be filled with people complaining about with girl isn't it. Soooo many years worth of jrpg designs you'd think people would jus politely b use to it by now or jus dont play it by now.

And to the people saying its characters like her that makes it hard to play games like this around people i find that incredibly sad, if you're that self conscious on what people think or your friends and family cant accept what u play thats unfortunate and this is coming from a guy who just earlier was playing an import of estival versus while my fiancé stood there yelling at me to play better(i suck)

Square Enix really released this as an official TGS screenshot for Star Ocean 5. The game looks so much better than this screenshot makes it seem.

It's like when you pause a movie and the guy has a funny face lol.

Square is fucking up a lot of their screenshots lately.

Eh, Star Ocean has a history of being better about that than other JRPG series. Even the first game had a character who was 38 years old as one of the 4 main characters and I don't remember him being portrayed as being really old. I could be misremembering, though.

Curious to see how the cast is personality-wise. I'm not crazy about some of their designs, that's for sure...

It all looks awesome to me, even the witch girl is awesome. I'm not sure how good the story will be but the game looks to be very, very promising.

I am huge tri-Ace fan but I generally my method to their games is to not take much stock in their storytelling but play for the gameplay.

They might not have the best writers, but they never made a game with bad mechanics, so from a gameplay angle it is something to look forward to.

Thanos acquires the fully powered Infinity Gauntlet in The Avengers: Infinity War, but loses when all the superheroes team up together to stop him.
Prefacing this post by saying I don't really like pandering designs in general.

People saying Fiore's design is offensive from a sexual standpoint aren't wrong, but it's so awful from a pure fashion standpoint that I can't support it, at all.

Myuria from SO4 is a sexualized design I don't have problems with because it looks stylish in its own way, even if it is pandering to an extent.

So4_muria.jpg

Checkerboard Fiore is just like, what? Especially when her companions all have cool looking clothing. Even worse is that her hair and face design are actually quite good, but she's ruined by her fashionista-gone-wrong outfit. I really hope she has checkers/chess themed attack names just to justify her design. "KING CROSS" for example. That'd actually make it somewhat acceptable.

I really liked Celine's design from SO2; it was bordering on the "sexy" and was certainly in the outlandish category but also showed enough restraint that it was also fashionably acceptable.

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
Seems like this was a pretty popular game at TGS. Around 2 hours of queuing in line just to try out the demo (according to Gematsu comments).

To me, there's nothing wrong with occasional pandering, especially in a fantasy game like this. And let's face it, this game is targeted mostly to Japanese anime fans and therefore the choice in character design.

Do I like it? Not really. Especially from the design aesthetic POV, those colored hair thing always bothers me. But they want to appeal to the game's biggest target market and as usual, business will take precedence over anything else.

I find that Celine design even worse to be honest. The trim running between her legs and conspicuously placed tattoo make it pretty cringey.

I am not really fan of the Witch's outfit either, its too ridiculous and not practical (lol like it matters in games like this). As others have said, there are ways to make sexy look stylish, and thats not an example of that. Having said that, I would be more ok with it if there weren't a tail and wings in the back. Like, why. Otherwise the rest of the group looks good.

And, btw I knew the Lymyle look-a-like would be a girl who lost her memory. lol

Lol hoop cape always bugged me from that. I mean what does it just stay in place with magic and what is it supposed to be anyways it looks like a too low torn curtain...

I honestly don't care about costume design. What has me worried is actual exploration. Seems like you're limited on exploring and that you can only go to certain places.

It seems no one mentioned but they actually showed an extended trailer at the first event.

You can see battle scenes with the blue haired dude, a new area (very futuristic looking) and a scene at the end with a new character (looks like a villain).

It starts at 14:25

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kZCvPjAv2as

Edit: added some screenshots.

From that extended trailer it looks like light-blue haired guy uses a crossbow and green haired ninja girl fights with her fists

I really like the story in the first two Star ocean's on the PSP. So long as it lives up to that, I'm fine. I just didn't care for the story at all in 3 and 4. In fact, I would consider the story and dialogue in those two to be pretty bad.
