Release date announced unexpectedly.
Trouble between Kojima & Konami surfaces.
Turns out he's been burning through their money and not delivering.
His entire team are getting the boot once the game releases.
Game releases with half baked story, repeated mission and missing content.
Actually guys this is the way it was meant to be all along. O Kojime.

O Kojime

They don't believe me

But you won't let those

Die-hard fans, eat me

Yeah. And from his (very good) portrayal of Ishmael early on, effectively being Snake Bauer, you were hoping for more ham moments for him to chew things up. Play to his strengths.

I thought his last scenes with Ocelot etc were just as strong/badass as the Ishmael ones, and his tapes were great, too. He was written just like the classic Snake we know and love in those sequences.

Ocelot was blonde, like his mother.

Nyeehhhhh. It's like white-blonde, not strawberry-blonde. Some people also grey by 35, which Ocelot is probably older than. His face also looks pretty young, I think it's intentional. Raiden's hair is just as white actually...

...

Man, we called this days ago, that the 'It's bad because it's supposed to be bad' would find it's way into the media. I can only laugh.

Yeah, I know that. You're right. I just want to finish it, you know? Finish it and move on.

And I feel like a better game would still have me entertained rather than burned out at 100 hours. Whether or not I'm burned out I'm not sure what the point of all those repetitive side ops or all that waiting is. I also feel like it's not my fault that due to extended play I'm seeing all the flaws - if the flaws weren't there to be seen I wouldn't see them.

I'd love to join in on the plot discussion but I'm afraid I found it so unengaging that speculation about it doesn't interest me at all. Never thought I'd say that about a Metal Gear game.

I feel you man. I was a big fan of all of it but I can totally empathise.

In my case, the bad vibes from this thread made me expect a story even worse than what we actually got. So I ended up very happy with it. Plus the gameplay is god-tier if you don't binge it and instead drip it out - like I've been forced to, by work, travel, social events, yadda.

I mean, PW was a direct sequel to MGS3, and it wasn't called MGSV. They should've it MGS5: Chapter 1, with V being Chapter 2. At least it would give us hope that there would be a Chapter 3, Gaben aside...

Kojima must thank Konami a lot for not allowing him to name PW MGS5 so he could add "V has come to" in TPP

Clearly the reason for Big Boss not having any grey hair in 1984 was that he actually did shave his beard and hair to become Ishmael; and had Ocelot give him a wig and fake beard to ease the phantom pain while it grew back. Alternatively, Huey invented adaptive face camo decades before MGS4; and it was just conveniently forgotten in the interim.

What about Portable Ops? But yeah, I remember hearing rhetoric that PW was the true MGS5 when it was coming out.

The gameplay is different. You do recruit soldiers, but I don't recall it working in the same way as PW. The latter starts with you getting an off-shore plant to use as your MSF base, which I'm guessing is the one that gets destroyed in GZ. Even the core combat (CQC) in V is closer to that in PW. Strangely, you can't crawl in PW, but you can't crouch walk in PO.

Portable Ops starts with you being imprisoned, and meeting Roy Campbell. Maybe it does become like PW and the story directly precedes it, but the controls are more irritating than in PW. (I'm replaying both right now)

Can someone remind me. Was it stated that Big Boss gets plastic surgery after leaving Ocelot?

Actually, yes!

It's one of the last things Ocelot says to him before Big Boss rides off. He says, 'You're going to need to change your face, too' and IIRC gives him a card or something.

People are really reaching to try and justify the fact that a dude didn't finish his magnum opus for whatever reason. And then this bullshit to try and come up with a way to justify repetition and rehashed missions.

Like holy shit some are just too desperate to admit that mistakes were made during the development of the game.

Yeah it's really dumb to say that the repeat missions have some thematic importance, but I think he's right about the 'day after tomorrow' stuff. Kaz and BB get the revenge they've been looking for, but it's not fulfilling. Kaz starts suspecting his own men etc.

Basically, revenge is butts

Has anyone figured out what the Code Talker cutscene means?

"Eyes on Kaz"

"a meeting between 2 containers in daylight?"

"Ocelots aim is off today"
The random muttering is just Code Talker saying the observations the parasites have made out loud. The eyes on Kaz thing is not explained. It seems like the guy sends parasites out to be his eyes.

Oh yeah. What Empty Space said - I think he's verbalising what he's sensing through the parasites. "Eyes on Kaz" is like the parasites telling him they're watching Kaz.

Isn't there a story mission that involves you stealing two containers filled with Talker's research?

And you know, maybe naming him Benedict was a bit too unsubtle.

I will say that maybe that's where the story was headed before it got cut off at the knees.

I named my avatar Big Boss and completely forgot that I did that. When Ocelot handed him a passport that said he changed his name to "Big Boss", I was like "Well, that's stupid, why would he officially make his name something he's trying to hide?"

Best hiders do so in plain sight brah

So instead of reporting on the broken state of the narrative in this game, they imply that it's deliberately done?

Bizarre. Just bizarre.

As they say around these parts:

:dead:

It's a passport with the identity of the player created avatar in it.

Haha. Oh yeah.

What a mindfuck.

Edit: Can I just say that I can imagine your avatar's face being your expression while watching The Truth

Hell yeah that is awesome.

Outer Heaven in mg1 is definitely Venom's creation.

You know I just realized this, and this only contributes to the phantom pain of what could have been with V:

Call me Ishmael is an infamous literary phrase and I think it's due to the fact that it is akin to the third person omniscient "little did he know" implying the existence of a narrator. We can surmise this because at the very beginning of the game, we see Venom walk up to a mirror, which is usually associated with a crisis of identity in most works of fiction, and play a cassette tape (From the man who sold the world) upon which the camera zooms in. Cut to the ending scene of the game and we are given the truth from big boss himself, " Now do you remember. Who you really are." This implies thatryinggame that we just played up to that point was a story being told to us by the narrator (big boss).

Now let's look at the Moby dick motif at face value. You have a captain, or captains, with missing limbs and a thirst for vengeance in command of a group of multicultural crewman out at sea. Pequod and Queegueg, the chopper pilots, are your harpooners. And that's where I'm stopping cuz super bunny hop just posted the mgsv analysis video we've all been waiting for and he is gonna say what I'm trying to say only better:

That mgsv's thematic narrative fails because it is a Metal Gear game. Canonical baggage is the killer here as it was for gz.

Bizarre. Just bizarre.

Nothing exposes how inept "games journalists" really are like a piece about games as art.

The emperor has no clothes.

Bizarre. Just bizarre.

What I love is the implication that the theme of the game was actually finished off and made whole by Konami's CEO. That he looked at the game being made, and said 'Thematically, it would be perfect if we rushed this out unfinished. Yes, this is what I must do, from a purely artistic standpoint.'

Kojima deserves 'zero' credit for this masterpiece.

Many lines of defence at the moment

1) That's Kojimas genius, you don't understand it

2) It's just not the narrative you wanted, you're just ignorant!

3) HAHA jokes on you, you missed that it's not a mainline MGS. Its V not 5 you dummy! That gives it the right to be narratively unsatisfying

4) It was all Konamis fault. They made him pad Chapter 2 to fuck and only give him $80 million coupled with five years to make it. He's not a miracle worker. That's why it's unfinished #fuckkonami

It's been sometime since I've played MGS3, but I don't think it was hinted at all in that game that Big Boss and his team would create The Patriots.

It was pretty clear, actually. After the ending of MGS2, when the next game was announced as a prequel I KNEW it was going to be about the origins or the first steps of The Patriots. Kojima is as subtle as a glowing, radioactive brick.

Kojima spoiled almost the entire plot of MGS3 in the trailers. Then came that famous trailer where Major Zero says "The password is Who Are The Patriots" and "La Li Lu Le Lo". Since the game makes clear that The Patriots didn't exist yet (The credits state as much), I knew that Zero was certainly either the founder of The Patriots, or was involved in the whole thing. From the support cast, Major Zero is the only one that gets his name revealed as "David Oh". This means he is the only character in the support crew that is completely new to the series.

Then come Para-Medic and Sigint. The name of those two are never revealed (Unlike Zero's), which means they are characters that have appeared in the series before but Kojima wanted their identities to remain a secret.

When Para-Medic started talking about cloning and mentioning Snake as an "excellent specimen" for cloning, I knew that she would become the one to do it.

Then Sigint goes and mocks the idea of a walking tank, and the game reveals that he eventually joins ARPA. This instantly made me realize he was Donald Anderson, a guy in a VERY high position of power.

Then The Boss' speech reveals the theme of the entire game: "Yesterday's allies becomes tomorrow's opposition". "Friends can become enemies according to the times". She was clearly not only talking about the US and the Soviet Union. She was referencing Big Boss' eventual fall against the US, and the radio crew (Snake's 'friends') becoming his enemies.

I knew that the british guy would become a center piece of The Patriots before the game was ever released. The rest was just putting 2 and 2 together. The support crew were supposed to be the original founders of The Patriots since the very beginning.

You know what's really weird? I had the exact opposite experience.

When the 'Enter your name' screen came up - for the first time ever I decided to put my name in the game. So I entered my first name. It didn't really feel right but I also felt compelled to.

So skip to The Truth... When I turn that picture around and Big Boss himself has written a little note to me...

It really had an impact. I really did feel involved, like it really was me who had just all of this in support of BB.

Obviously that is going to be lost on the 99% of people who probably put in either joke names or their online handle.

I agree with this - it's MGS' lineage which has hobbled MGSV in the eyes of many.

"You're a legend in the eyes of those who live on the battlefield... Now go. Let the legend come back to life!

Hey, No, no, that's not how you ride American-style. Ask me if you want help!

Snake, watch out for that rock. Oh, shit, oh, fuck, the cliff, Snake – SNAAAAAAAAAKEE.

Welp. There goes the legend. Why didn't he just ask me for help?"

I don't see what chapter 3 could add that would make people change their minds about the story.
Probably what the hell Big Boss actually was doing during that time. Maybe get a peak at Solid Snake. Maybe see how the events lead into MG1 (does Venom go rogue and the real Big Boss makes the decision to have Venom be targeted by Snake?) If Venom does go rogue/bad then we need to see how that happens because that is what made people want to play the game in the first place (ie. the downfall of Big Boss into villainy).

More importantly though just having the episode 51 Liquid Snake resolution would be good by itself. From the description it seemed like an epic battle (culminating in the usage of your DD forces that you have acquired) worthy of a finale.

Oh look it's Ishida

being a better MGS fan than everybody else. lol

For real though, it's easy to put all those pieces together now, a decade after MGS3 came out, isn't it? I mean surely we all assumed it would have something to do with the origins of the Patriots, but the support crew in 3 was just so likeable. Plus for the English-only speakers, the whole gender mistranslation gaffe in MGS1 meant we wouldn't have any reason to believe Dr. Clark and Para Medic were the same person.

I dunno. A ton of people were surprised that the support crew from 3 ended up being the, for lack of a better word, antagonists of basically the entire series when it was revealed in 4, and after playing through the last couple MGS games I'm inclined to lean less towards "I just wasn't paying enough attention" and more towards "Kojima might not be the brilliant writer I thought he was when I was 17."

Kojima definitely isn't the brilliant writer that some people think he is but I totally buy that the support cast of MGS3 were supposed to be the Patriots all along. Or at least they were planned to be around the time MGS2/MGS3 were being thought of and not when MGS4 was made.

Kojima has some really cool ideas but he doesn't have the subtlety or the finesse to maximize his ideas. IMO he's an overrated writer but an underrated game director. For years I have thought Kojima couldn't make a MGS game with top stealth game play and controls (and I wasn't the only one, many people have criticized MGS's game play/controls) yet here we are with Phantom Pain which is arguably the best in its genre in those categories. Then I look back at the previous MGS games and realized that in their time they employed cutting edge game designs or were at least very ambition in their design.
