LEGO Dimensions |OT| Not Lost Dimensions

Skylanders side-steps this issue very well with everyone only calling you 'Skylander' and the Infinity series has characters 'locked' into a specific playset (giving you a core 'cast' for that world making their stories make sense).

Dimensions doesn't really side-step this issue and the other characters feel out of place in the core story. You don't see Ninjago helping out the gang during there level, they are just side characters in the stadium. Homer has some funny moments in his level but thats it. The Wicked Witch is the main boss of the first level; playing as her to....fight her is very odd.

Overall, its a flawed but interesting effort in the toys-to-life genre. But they have to step their game up for the next version (if there is one).

I'm sorry but having everyone completely ignore and not take notice of who you are playing or having characters locked into specific playsets, don't seem like good solutions to this problem at all, they seem like restrictions. I personally prefer Lego Dimensions decision to give the player a very structured set of story missions using the characters in the starter pack, than (to my limited understanding) Skylanders extremely devious business model of gating certain missions that seem to be part of the story.

Yeah, I kinda agree that this is a lazy way of handling it too. I dunno, the sad truth is that I bet I'd never get what would make me happy, where they'd actually put the money and effort into making every possible outcome possible. God knows they make so much fucking bank on these games, that they can afford it, but putting too much work cuts into their profit margins...

I hate that I'm supposed to understand the restrictions, because it's not cost effective for them. As a consumer though, I don't give a shit. I want them to give the best possible experience, especially when I know they can afford it.

While it might make more sense to wait to get the doc brown fun pack, the BTTF free roaming world kicks all kinds of ass. Three different time periods, and stuff you do in earlier time zones can effect later ones. Other McFlys voiced once more by Michael J Fox. Again, in a month or two $15 will get you in, and it's way more content than the level pack.

I love this little delorian I have now though. The hover board is a bit whatever and I already have a Marty from the full sized Lego delorian but whatevs. I guess I'll replay the level pack when I have doc and someone with lasers to get things I missed.

This is reassuring it also reinforces that the level packs are poor value for money, as the fun packs are half the price but unlock the larger piece of content too.

They don't gate story in any of the Skylanders. All the optional doors thar recquired a specific element in the previous games, only unlocked hats. In the newest one you only need one of each type of vehicle (3 in total and all just were for an an extra star in your score). In all of the Skylanders games, you can finish the story with just the starter pack. In the newest one on the digital version, you can even finish the entire story and multiplayer on and offline without buying any figure.

What the other poster meant was mostly that in the story Skylanders, no matter the character everyone refers to the Skylander as Skylander (no need to say the name of each one) and the player is also part of the story and refered to as the Portal Master.

The game is broken for me so far. The Batmobile build doesn't trigger when it's supposed to. I've done the in-game builds for the portal, Scooby snack, Mystery Machine and winged monkey. I've also built the Batmobile from Youtube instructions but it just reads as a blank tag without flipping through the nonexistent instructions. Maybe it's because of the update I didn't download? I kept getting errors when I tried to download it until just now.

No, there are level packs for Skylanders, like Sheepwreck Island, Tower of Time, Nightmare Express, etc.

Yeah and none have any relation to the main story (side missions) neither are required to finish the game or to get the full story. Some cool ones like the one in Swap-Force around time control, but are not gated requirements.

guys,do you play through the whole story as just gandalf, wildstyle and batman ? or do they let you play with other characters in the starter pack that you unlock through freeplay ? i know you can buy the packs, but surely they give you some characters on the disc itself.

anyone please ?

I think that would be really quite amazing if they pulled that off in the inevitable future installments. But the pesismist inside me knows that continuing to get away with the bare minimum would be much more cost efficient than the extra voice acting

Yeah, the Batmobile build works now.
TT games have always been buggy but when you can't make it past two minutes of gameplay without a patch that's a new level of shitshow.

Errggh I want to play this so bad but no way am I paying £80 for the base. Sorry, that's just outrageous. I think like £60 would be the sweet spot for me, here's hoping for any kind of sale at some point.

I'm hoping for a Black Friday sale (for it to drop to £50 odd) for the base game then pick up the portal/ BTTF level packs.

I'm interested in seeing how the prices hold up over time.

Other than the portal itself, the physical lego in a £25 pack is about what you'd get in a £10 starter pack (which are regularly reduced to £7 in stores). And the fun packs have about the same amount of Lego as a £4 mini-kit.
Previous Lego games drop in price just like any other game, but the continuous waves of level packs might mean that they keep prices high on all the packs.

Having recently bought Marvel Superheroes for £12, which has a massive amount of content - I'm not spending crazy money on level packs that add <5% of the content of previous games.

Yeah it's pretty much this, for the value you get out of the other Lego games, even at full launch price this is mad. I mean I know Lego is expensive but this takes it to some whole other level.

You can add anyone, any time. Mini builds from level packs (vehicles and tools) have to be unlocked by playing the add on level. The cutscenes will only reflect Gandalf, Wildstyle and Batman, but you can add anyone you want from the very first moment you get control. The concept of having to unlock freeplay to use other characters has fortunately been removed here.

So how do the fun packs unlock more content than the level packs? Is it because they have an extra character?

Kind of misleading to call one a level pack and the other a fun pack when both will open the level, no?

Fun packs unlock free-roaming hub worlds for their franchise if you didn't already have someone from that franchise.

Level Packs unlock a story mission (with cutscenes) that takes place in their dimension. You also get the hub world if they're your first character from their franchise.

So it depends on who you already have to determine how much extra content you unlock.

Sorry, maybe worded badly.
Level pack unlocks hub world for that brand, and a shortish level to play through.
Fun pack still unlocks the hub but that's all.

But if you look at the pricing, the level pack is twice the price of a fun pack and from imoressions, the exclusive level they unlock isn't that large. So it seems like the fun packs are better value.

So I put Homer on and around his circle when he's in the game is just flashing read in the top left corner. I can't get his build instructions either. Anyone else having a similar problem?

So has anyone reported what the time-to-complete is for each of the first three level packs (BTTF, Simpsons and Portal 2)?

I've heard anywhere from 20 minutes on the Back to the Future one to maybe up to an hour if you're taking your time. Honestly, I think at this point it's probably just best to expect that if you're looking for a great time/money spent ratio, Dimensions may not be your best bet. The appeal for me is that I love LEGO (and so does my kid) and I like a lot of these licenses, plus the LEGO standalone games have always been great, simple, charming fun.

That's the impression I've been getting. I'm just curious about the lengths of each, is all.

No, you need the Simpsons level pack to play as homer

LOL. No you don't. You just need the mini figure.

Does he work in the main game? If not then you, like so many others, have a bunk portal, or a bunk Simpsons character

True, but right now the only way to get homer is with the Simpsons level pack...unless you know someone who has the figure or you can buy it used.

The problem is whenever they add in a new character, they have to bring back nearly every VA for new lines acknowledging them. Now go and look at their voice cast.

Even including time building the toys I was nowhere near an hour and I took my time oolm the BTTF level. There really isn't much to explore. It's three small areas followed by a medium sized one, and that medium sized one is annoyingly just one side of the town hall square, so even that feels super limited when you want to explore the whole square to see the diner and the town hall etc.

A version of BTTF that omits Marty interacting with his parents is one that misses the whole idea which inspired zemeckis to write the damn movie! No skateboarding away from Biff and his goons is crazy especially when they make you escape the barn as one of the 4 short sections. No one wants to explore the damn barn!

Fortunately the free roaming world is ace, but if you don't have to have Marty and the delorian then buying Doc makes way more sense.

Honestly I figured talk of 20 minutes was people powering through, but it's not. I'm still buying the other level packs I have to have (Doctor Who, Ghostbusters and Midway) but no way I pick up any that I'm only half interested. The toys and the hub world's are the value here, and only the hub world if you can't get in with another figure.

Fortunately the free roaming world is ace.

This is the reason why I bought Lego Dimensions. I wanted a game that I can sit down, relax and just have fun. Also, I know that this game will be supported for at least 3 years and new characters are coming that I can use. I cannot wait for ghostbusters, especially slimer and stay puff.

Sure a bigger story with the level packs would be great, but when it comes to lego games, give me the world and let me explore and have fun.

What's the Portal hub like? That's the only level pack I haven't bought yet.

Kind of bummed at no Chima or Lego City set.

Call me crazy but I thought I saw a lightsaber & the lightsaber noise during the cutscene after the wizard of oz level.

Nonetheless, really enjoying the game.

Ah, my bad! I'm sure they'll have more of their own branded stuff like levels coming, since it doesn't involve outside licensing.

I imagine we won't see stuff like that until a sequel, right? I'm sure everything's been datamined for this year. Next year I could see a sequel with TMNT, Star Wars(?) and maybe some original sutff like Lego City. I know the City stuff is still their most popular original brnad. I think the Chima stuff has fallen in popularity in recent years.

Supposedly the plan is that future levels will all get patched in, rather than requiring a separate release. (It's why they put the "Internet Connection Required" disclaimer on the box.)

The Wicked Witch said "I'll get you my pretties, and your giant dog, too.". That has to be because Scooby-Doo was in my party at the time, right? It wouldn't make sense otherwise.

The real reason for "Internet Connection Required" is that it's impossible to make it past the tutorial room without a 5.5GB patch.

Weeeell, you'd still have to buy the figures/sets to play those new things :D

That's still a lot better than the Infinity/Skylanders approach of having to use the old games to make older playsets work and having to buy a new game with every release.

Oh god, is it like that? Horrible.

Still better to wait and see. There's the intention and there's business. That was also the original intention with Infinity, Skylanders and even games like LittleBigPlanet, but then were scrapped in favor of sequels that "added too many improvements to just patch in".

In Dimensions because of the licences and voice-overs it will also depend on how long said contracts were at the moment of signing them.

Then there are "the other reasons". There has been quite a few complaints at NFC chips of figures arriving dead or portals not working well or just not working, so a new line of "improved figures" with a different color or facial expression would be a way to force people into double-dipping.

At first yeah. Skylanders was more of an early talk, before the game was even the success it ended as. For Infinity they were a bit more vocal, talking about it as a platform, etc. Later, on of the excuse was that because of the being on Wii, they couldn't make it as intended and because they made a ton of changes to the engine and Toy Box, here was 2.0.

2.0 was even expected to add DLC characters starting with Flynn and Quorra from Tron along release of their figures. But then, 2.0 underperformed on consoles, but were getting some good earnings from the free to play PC and mobile versions, so they added Flyyn and Quorra to those versions only (and as standalone in 3.0).

So, while I love this kind of games I don't jump into them with the expectation of them updating it as time passes..as they said. It would be great if they finally did.

Well the three year plan for lego dimensions has been touted a few times now so I feel that what will likely Happen is there'll be the level packs, team packs and fun packs we know about, but then this time next year you'll also get a "scenario pack" with say 3 new characters(from new properties) and a new 12 hour "scenario" which will retail at say typical new game retail price. Whether this is on a disc or just another level piece which accesses data installed via a patch, who knows..

I also see the Dimensions starter set being updated to include both scenarios, and the new 3 characters replace gandalf and co, but newcomers can play the original scenario with these new guys so as not to miss out.

Then they'll have another three or four waves of new level/team/fun packs and the cycle continues.
