Star Wars: The Force Awakens Final Trailer

I disagree. The whole point of the OT is to show Luke triumph over his anger/fear where his father failed. Undoing all of that in the sequel trilogy would be an incredibly bad idea.
The OT only showed Luke resisting mild temptations from Vader. You could easily explain him turning dark due to some serious events. Minds would be blown.

I'm so hyped about the Kylo/Finn lightsaber duel.

Finn looks like he's fucking terrified at every movement Kylo makes which is just great, and I'm assuming there's going to be no flipping and spinning to be found. Would be great too if they just keep randomly slicing through trees that get in the way like they're not even there.

lmao i wonder how people would feel if hayden's ghost showed up in this. please don't reply if you know something btw.

Spoiler:
Episode VII Opening crawl ends, camera descends to desert planet Jakku. First person we see is force ghost Hayden talking to Jar Jar. "hmm. I feel a coarseness in the Forceness" Jar Jar says "Meesa feels it too"

Yup, JJ Abrams goes out of his way to get some of the best martial artists no mainstream moviegoer has heard of in his film and to assist in the choreography, only to tone it down and westernize it.

God, this sounds like the whole "BB-8 is obviously CGI" again :D

The Raid is more graphic than Star Wars will ever be. The fights in The Raid and The Raid 2 were prepped and trained for for months. You're not going to see The Raid level of fights here. You're going to get Ronda Rousey fighting in a Dubai apartment.

I'm still not feeling the antagonist. The weird, overdesigned mask (which has a cool general shape, but it's so busy) and the silly three-pronged saber.

I was just thinking I sure hope there's not a bunch of ridiculous acrobatics and flipping and spinning. Maybe a *little* shownmanship from certain characters would be okay, but the prequels made it ridiculous.

It wasn't the fact that they're dealing with salvage. It's the cinematography that felt off to me, by looking more like your typical modern sci-fi movie instead of Star Wars. But it wasn't a major criticism anyway.
Well the trailer is filled with pretty shots, I ain't complaining.

That's what I love about it too, he's definitely thinking "Oh shit, i'm in way too far over my head on this one" it's such a small detail, but a great one

Oh my god, such restraint. Oh my god. Oh my goooooooood. Please hire whoever did this trailer to do all future trailers for all films.

Less than 2 months to gooooo

I don't know why, but that trailer just gave me the same vibes that I used to have when I was kid watching the first Star Wars.
Like I actually am watching something that happens in another world, with good characters fighting some evil.
And the new characters feel somehow familiar, like they truly belong.

Fucking hell, I was not as hyped before, despite the great teasers so far, but this one got me. With this, Sicario and Creed it's going to be a good end to the year.

Yeah, me too, that part really stood out to me, like how is Finn not going to get killed right there?
A good guy way over his head fighting some true evil.
Daaaaaaamn, I cannot wait anymore, I'm dying here to see it.

Oh god I'm watching the trailer again and it just keeps getting better.

You guys say what you like about this trailer but for me

That was the best part I think of all the trailers. It says so much with so little and the accompanying music is fantastically arranged to it.

Totally agreed. A perfect moment with so much depth behind it.

Woooooooo!!! I'm so hyped!! Amazing trailer. I truly believe JJ will do this franchise justice. Fuck I might just buy Battlefront even though I'm not that bothered about it lol.

I'm very sensitive to whether scenes feel like Star Wars or not, but I took to that scene instantly.

There wasn't a scene like that in the previous films... but it felt to me like the perfect Star Wars scene for a new generation. In the wreck of a familiar environment, bundled up looking like a Sandperson or a Hoth rebel, the ultimate evolution of the "lived in" sci fi universe that Star Wars pioneered.

So while I can see that it's not "Starwarsy", it feels perfectly like a next-generation Star Wars scene.

.

Same here...

Feels perfectly fine.

I like, that they introduce new elements, but somehow they managed that everything still feels "Star Wars" to me.
The Prequels started off "star warsy", but as soon as AOTC began, everything felt off to me.

The only thing I am a little bit reluctant about is the "Glamtrooper" in the chromy stormtrooper suit. I hope it makes sense in the story though..

J.J.Abrams's signature at 0:49 in trailer.

And it looks glorious..

Was the term "Sith" ever used in the OT?

No, they really only referred to The Dark Side. It was still part of the universe though and used plenty of times in merchandise etc. Kylo Ren may not be a Sith but if they avoid using that term as some form of subtle prequel-bashing I'll be pretty pissed tbh.

Mild temptations from Vader? Do you not remember the Emperors throne room?

The hero worshipping of Vader seems like a confused plot point considering his character arc. Even if the new Sith guy is deluded or missing the point, Vader's arc was so black and white that the idea we suddenly have to take his evilness seriously again just seems contrived with a hint of pandering.

I hope they handle that aspect well and don't retcon him.

To be honest, if it's a plot point that could be suggested by numerous different people in a trailer thread, I doubt it would actually be that mind-blowing as a twist.

"The Dark Side. The Jedi.... They're real."

That line really gets to me. I know it's meant to... it's the dramatic moment of the trailer, calculated to maximize emotion.

But to some part of me it says "the magic of Star Wars, what you once loved, how you once saw this story.... it's real".

;_;

i have to say i dislike Oscar Isaac... ive hated almost every role he has played a little bumed he is in this...he has played asshole characters most of his carrer so him playing a good guy in this is off putting...

I loved that scene. As a kid, I lived next to a creek, and once while exploring it I stumbled upon an incredibly old mill (which has since been redeveloped into a park). That was basically a life changing event. The scene reminded me so much of those times. To me, that ship (building?) felt like Rey's incredibly old mill. :P

It just reminds me of Dark Empire. I'd prefer they stayed away from that kind of story.

it does feel like a line that's directed at the audience.

I disagree, I thought the cinematography there was beautiful. It looked carefully framed and the wide angle shot was stunning.

We already know Luke's role from the leaks, we have even seen him in costume. If anyone wants to spoil themselves then just google it.

Very mild spoiler:
Luke is not a villain

The hero worshipping of Vader seems like a confused plot point considering his character arc. Only about 3 people in the galaxy know the truth about Vader. Nothing is being retconned, Kylo is just obsessed with the ideal of Vader as a Sith.

Part of me really hopes they reference the prequels in some way. At least mention Maul or hell, bring him back for Episodes 8 or 9.

I'm not against prequel nods, but I can't imagine any direct references, especially substantial stuff, in the new films coming off as anything other than forced. It's been 50 years since Ep. III, and pretty much everyone from the prequels is dead and forgotten, and the ones that are remembered are remembered for what came later (like all of the main characters). Most of the events are no longer particularly relevant, at least enough to warrant significant mention. I suppose they could revisit old locations like Coruscant and Naboo, but they'd have to have a good reason.

They can do fun stuff like Leia sensing Maul in the comics or having full returns in the TV series because they have a lot more room to maneuver around and include that kind of stuff, but it's going to be very difficult for the movies to do well.

I dunno. He was a feared warlord who was the Emperors commander in chief. He reigned and inspired fear for 30 years. The only person to see him doubt himself and ultimately redeem himself was solely Luke

Him still being held up as a poster figure for evil by fanboys like Kylo sounds reasonable, even if only to serve as a third act reveal where Luke turns up and tells him his idolization is based on lies.

I can completely understand, actually.

But just by nature that:

1. It's a new director/non-Lucas regime
2. It's 10 years after the prequels and 30 years after the OT,

....we'd expect some evolution of the cinematic language. Even if Lucas were directing this, he'd evolve his cinematography in 2015.

Considering that, I find scenes like the Star Destroyer salvage well within what I'd expect from a Star Wars in 2015. You want to hew to what Lucas established, but not too much. It's a fine balance.

Now.... if there aren't Kurosawa-style horizontal screen wipes, that will make me feel it has betrayed Star Wars convention. That'd be the same as ditching the opening crawl.

I do think it looks great, but honestly it doesn't look very Star Wars-y. That's something I've felt from the first teaser - the shot framing and movement is not at all reminiscent of previous Star Wars films. Same with the editing. Star Wars has very distinct shot composition, movement, and editing, to the point where it's easily recognizable, and this film doesn't have it.

That said, in the grand scheme of things it's not the worst thing and most people will never, ever notice, but I am a little sad at the loss of some aspects of the franchise's unique visual signature.
That said other aspects are far more true to the originals than the prequels ever were, like lighting and colors, so it balances out.

Pretty much this.

Bads would of course use his image for propaganda.

I dunno.

How interesting will it be when Kylo Ren's ideal version of Vader comes crashing into Luke's assessment of his own father, whom he knew to have turned to the light side?

I think that's quite interesting of a dynamic.

It reminds me of the great grandson of L. Ron Hubbard, Jamie DeWolf, who thinks his great grandfather was a villainous con-man... but he collides with the view of Scientology who think he was a saint.
