I know it is. But it's different to suspend belief for space battles which I've never seen, lightsabers which I've never seen, robots which I've never seen and aliens which I've never seen vs. ships flying around in atmosphere like they're F16's without wings to keep them up.

No need to get so defensive over it.
I think its reasonable to assume that if they can fly around in space at crazy speeds like that a bit of atmosphere wont impact them too much besides maybe slowing them down

Honestly, it's not different at all.

And I don't think I'm the one getting defensive.

Prequels are worse than original but they are certainly better than most movies out there.

I agree. Just watched the original trilogy and Phantom Menace. While Phantom Menace isn't nearly as good as the original movies it is still enjoyable movie with bunch of good stuff.

So, as someone who has never seen any SW movie: what is the best way to get into the series? Which movies to watch and in what order?

Personally? In release order: A New Hope to Return of the Jedi since these are the movies that made everyone fall in love with the series and then Episodes I-III.

Once you're done then go back and watch Episodes IV-VI again to be ready for The Force Awakens!

In seven films it would make the THIRD time such a narrative/plot device has been used.

It makes sense though. Can you imagine a superpower in a technologically-advanced galaxy not having a massive super-weapon to help position them at a level of dominance/superiority?

Antigrav generators and repulsorlift engines ya nerds

I don't think this is a spoiler since it's a case of someone not being in a movie, but no. Lando's not in it. Billy Dee Williams is however voicing Lando on Rebels, so here's to hoping he shows up in Episode VIII.

Billy Dee has commented that he is not in this one since he was not in a New Hope and introduced in Empire. He thinks they want to re-introduce Lando in 8. He did not confirm that though.

Might as well, too much going on in this movie, and you want Lando's re-introduction to be special and mean something.

I can't believe those recommending a viewing order always ignore Clone-Wars/Rebels. I was a life-long SW fan who deplored the prequel films, but Clone-Wars was actually so excellent that it somehow, retroactively, made them watchable to me.

And its all on at least US Netflix, making it fairly readily available.

Actually, at those speeds, most spaceships in star wars would get torn apart by wind drag alone in an atmosphere. But that can be explained away with shielding

Laws of physics don't really matter in SW universe. They even walk on asteroids with a just mask over their mouth.

Youtube is rife with spoilers, folks.

Just letting people know. It's gonna be hard to avoid this crap.

Is there a way to disable comments site wide?

Depends, do you want to watch good movies or get to know the brand?

From a filmmaking perspective, you only need to watch the original three. The first two are great movies (Empire is amazing) and the third is good with issues. The newer three Star Wars movies (the prequels) are not good films by any sort of reasonable standard.

But if you want to get into the STAR WARSSSSSS hype machine, you should watch the prequels as well. A brand is not defined by how good or how bad films are, it's about what the brand means to you and what you get out of them.

Is there a certain order one should watch them in?

Edit: Found a thread of someone asking the same question!

I don't know if I like the look of the film, or it's just 'action sequence + star wars music' that gives me goosebumps all over, but this trailer was fantastic.

That said, CGI chewbacca looked awful.

That's not defensive, ya dingleberry.

This is the scene where the cargo bay door drops down on the Falcon, crushes Chewie and breaks Han's ankle....lol

Release order is the only order that makes sense. The following statement is obvious but I'll say it: Lucas didn't watch the films in chronological order. The films were produced in a certain order and there's no way around that.

How much is Lucas even contributing to this? Did he pen the outline? Ok ideas? Just say "whatever" and went home with billions?

Lucas apparently has a script ready to go and they rejected it. It was discussed in the Vanity Fair article.

Something about his idea was having a teen/teens discovering Force powers and they felt it was too similar to the prequels.

No. This is for fans who have seen the movies multiple times and want a new way to look at it. This is absolutely not the proper way to introduce someone new to the movies.
Why not, it keeps all the twists in place, makes the course of the prequels still somewhat interesting (and sets up the second twist better) and has the right ending to the saga. Above all, no need to see the Phantom menace. Of course it does require a bit of refocus as you get a four hour flashback.

So I haven't been following this thread but everyone I talk to says Luke wasn't in the trailer.

Is that not him putting his hand on R2D2 at 1:40?

Oh so you're one of those science and logic types?

I'm sure the backstories of all the characters in that ship will be explored in the EU. Also that of some bird that the ship accidentally hit while entering the atmosphere.

lol what?

there aren't even novels announced over the next two months before release

ENu be slipping HORRIBLY

how slow we supposed to read aftermath?????
