Everyone noticed the Mandalorian symbol, but there are some other recognizable symbols in that shot from the pod race flags.

Yea one of my friends identified all the flags. Seems like all of them are there, including Anakin's flag.

Why? If this wasn't Star Wars people would be wondering what the fuck was going on? It doesn't tell us anything about the plot of the film.

You've gotten so swept up in the fan service you've completely lost sight of the fact that some people were left underwhelmed by what is a pretty superficial final trailer for the film.

That might be true, but I'm completely okay with it. This isn't a new movie franchise. There aren't a lot of people out there that haven't seen the other movies. Okay, yeah, it's fan service, but there are a heck of a lot of fans of the franchise for it to service. This isn't some obscure series that only a handful of people have seen.

After watching the trailer about a dozen times I think my favorite part is Han saying "It's all real." especially if you consider his "Simple tricks and nonsense" speech from A New Hope. I really love that shot of Finn about to fight Kylo Ren. He is absolutely terrified. I personally don't think Finn is force sensitive, the dude is about to get wrecked.

Alright after having some time to sleep on it, the lack of "VII" in the title is really bothering me if this is indeed the follow up to Ep VI. I must be OCD and die hard StarWars fans I'm sure don't care, but if its the 7th episode and is not a spinoff, then add Ep VII to the title!

It's the big thing with movie marketing now for whatever reason. Movies are never numbered anymore, just given subtitles.

+ I like that Jedi are mythical now. It gives it a fantasy/adventure vibe that was the appeal of Ep IV.
+ Lots of promising scenes were shown in the trailer

- I like darker films but this is a bit on the drab side
- I worry that it's just going through fanservice stuff like a checklist and (which is what JJ did with Star Trek) and I'll enjoy it initially but it won't hold up once I realize the emptiness of it
- The cast seems to be trying too hard and overacting
- As someone else said before, it's all too serious

The last movie ended on a high note, everything was fixed.
This one has to set the tone that things are still a mess and that there is shit going down

More trailers could stand to take a cue from that.

the originals didn't have "episode" in their titles/posters, either.

And I'm sure the Episode Number will be in the opening crawl.

That was something Lucas did with the prequels and we hate Lucas, so we have to try to keep away from everything that monster ever did.

Fair enough. I'm hoping for a sort of longer term approach than cramming too much "shit going down" in the first movie of the trilogy though.

What the trailer showed has a lot of potential, but I also don't entirely trust JJ Abrams to deliver. As others have pointed out, his take on Star Trek was really sterile, and I think it played things really safe e.g. did it really need to have McCoy say "Dammit Jim, I'm a doctor, not a [whatever];" it's just too on the nose and fanservicey.

VII will be in the opening scroll.

I'm kind of glad I don't have much nostalgia for the old Star Wars films & Luke & co. I'm more excited to see Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Daisy Ridley & Boyega in this. That's what has me pumped. Absolutely love the new cast!

Honestly, I wish a lot more trailers would do this. Sell me your movie in a trailer; don't show me your entire plot/movie in a trailer. It makes going to the theater underwhelming which is a much greater disservice than a trailer being "underwhelming".

I agree, the trailer is underwhelming in telling me what the film is about, but at the same time I've already been sold so I don't want to know too much about the film. I can easily see non star wars fans seeing absolutely nothing in the trailer because it's devoid of any sort of plot.

But it is Star Wars. So it's pointless to say "if it wasn't then _____". If it wasn't it would be handled differently.

THIS. I'm so glad went know much about the plot. That'll be revealed while watching the actual film. This is SW we know what to expect, we know millions will watch this movie. No need to reveal anything about the plot really.

What's wrong with fan service and nostalgia?

For the love of christ will someone please articulate in a thoughtful manner, just what exactly is wrong with fan service and nostalgia?

Isn't fan service exactly what you want in this scenario? So many of us were turned off by the prequels, I am more than happy, and almost at masturbatory levels of pleasure with excitement to think that this trilogy is going to run the other way from the last one.

If that's fan service, then give it to me all over my face.

So, as someone who has never seen any SW movie: what is the best way to get into the series? Which movies to watch and in what order?

4, 5, 1, 2, 3, 6.

Don't skip TPM/Episode 1 even though Machete says so, although I would say if you have access to "The Phantom Edit" (a fan distributed cut of TPM) then do so, it's a MUCH better film.
