What's wrong with fan service and nostalgia?
For the love of christ will someone please articulate in a thoughtful manner, just what exactly is wrong with fan service and nostalgia?
Isn't fan service exactly what you want in this scenario? So many of us were turned off by the prequels, I am more than happy, and almost at masturbatory levels of pleasure with excitement to think that this trilogy is going to run the other way from the last one.
If that's fan service, then give it to me all over my face.
After watching the trailer about a dozen times I think my favorite part is Han saying "It's all real." especially if you consider his "Simple tricks and nonsense" speech from A New Hope. I really love that shot of Finn about to fight Kylo Ren. He is absolutely terrified. I personally don't think Finn is force sensitive, the dude is about to get wrecked.
Honestly, I wish a lot more trailers would do this. Sell me your movie in a trailer; don't show me your entire plot/movie in a trailer. It makes going to the theater underwhelming which is a much greater disservice than a trailer being "underwhelming".
I mean trailers, period. The best ones are the ones that emphasize setting, mood, ideas and not plot.
Nothing as long as it is actually good too. People who mention those things as a negative are worried the film will be nothing but that. Which lot's of new versions of old things often coast on. I don't think this will it could. What's wrong with fan service and nostalgia?

I didn't get that impression at all. I thought the trailer was very smart in how it brings in the new while not forgetting the old.
So, as someone who has never seen any SW movie: what is the best way to get into the series? Which movies to watch and in what order?

Fair enough, but at least show some plot..., you know, so people actually know what the film is about?

Again, it's a spoiler to tell the audience how it ends etc, not what the film is about...,
Yeah I was surprised by the overall lack of R2 and 3PO
I agree, the trailer is underwhelming in telling me what the film is about, but at the same time I've already been sold so I don't want to know too much about the film. I can easily see non star wars fans seeing absolutely nothing in the trailer because it's devoid of any sort of plot.
Why? If this wasn't Star Wars people would be wondering what the fuck was going on? It doesn't tell us anything about the plot of the film.
You've gotten so swept up in the fan service you've completely lost sight of the fact that some people were left underwhelmed by what is a pretty superficial final trailer for the film.
The trailer tells you virtually nothing about the plot, unless maybe you meticulously take it apart. I think it's perfectly legitimate to dislike that. It's one thing to reveal the entire plot/movie in the trailer, it's another to reveal so little.
That's all not necessarily negative, but it's understandable if someone is sceptical, given all the baggage.

I'm tired of them anyway. I want Han to give no fucks if he sees him again.Yeah I was surprised by the overall lack of R2 and 3PO

Is "plot" the reason you go see a film? Did you watch Empire Strikes Back because you knew the opening would be the Battle of Hoth, at the end of that Luke goes to Dagobah to train and Han and Leia go to Cloud City. At Cloud City, Vader shows up, and Luke has to return to save his friends. He faces off against Vader, wherein he finds out Vader is his father, and he loses his hand. Han and Leia flee from Boba Fett to rescue Luke.
No, you probably saw Empire Strikes Back because you liked the first Star Wars, because it seemed like it would have some gorgeous visuals, some creative designs, some fun characters, and some intense action. That's exactly what this trailer tells me. I don't need to know, or even care what the plot is before I sit down.

I strongly disagree. I think it's completely legitimate to like Star Wars, yet refuse to buy into the hype, especially if one disliked the prequels. Phantom Menace had an amazing trailer, yet many would say that it was a bad movie. Given that the teasers/trailers have told us very little (explicitly) about the plot, given JJ Abrams' track record, it's not unreasonable to be sceptical. I mean, the cynic in me is telling me that they're trying to sell the movie based on the franchise name, pretty pictures and nostalgia.
Looks like Han to me too and I'm mad that they put that in the trailer!
Hopefully it's purposely misleading.
I'm also guessing that Luke turns up at the end to save the day...
What if Luke is inside C3PO? :OC3PO. Where is this guy?
To them it means that they didn't come up with anything original or creative. Which is some hilarious bullshit. I mean I'm guessing that's what it's about. It's just drivel, pay no mind. Pretty much every sequel in an established franchise is getting nailed with this nowadays by the same select folk.
kinda worried that Harrison Ford is slowly turning into my avatar. :/
on my...XXth watch, I've lost count, on Apple 1080p I noticed that subtle bit of film grain. Don't know why that turns me on, but it does.
If any of the OT gang die I'll be pissed - they've served their time, don't kill them off just for 'ohh drama' points. And that goes for the droids too (well maybe you can melt down threepio)
Thinking about Han and chewie, I think Han dying would be sadder, because audiences tend to anthropomorphise animals therefore chewie being sad would tear us up more than Han being sad.
That's because it's easier to use what you have rather than build new ideas. Because let's face it, if it wasn't a sequel then you would be looking at a remake.

Seriously. He's been mysteriously missing from the trailers.

Out of the 4 non droid OT characters the easiest to let go would be Leia. It would hurt but not as much as Chewie, Han or Luke.
Yes, but this is episode 7. Old things will carry over. Just like Jurassic World being set 20 years after the original. Both have their own stories and ideas, but yes, familiar elements will work themselves in naturally. Calling it nostalgia pandering and especially using it as a criticism is fucking idiotic.
Han is so going to die isn't he? He seems like the obi wan of that trailer. Maybe him AND Chewie, but don't think they will pass up the idea of a truly pissed chewbacca
That depends what "it" turns out to be. The sentiment is that hopefully it isn't just nostalgia pandering. This is a pretty reasonable opinion.
What you're arguing is a strawman, because you're addressing the opinion that the final movie is definitely just cheap fanservice, which is not something that anyone in this thread has expressed as far as I can tell. The most that I've seen in this thread is hope that it doesn't turn out like that.

Disney didn't spend that much money to acquire LucasFilm to create a cash grab. They are building out an entire franchise here, but you can't bring in new fans without some level of service to the old fans too.
I've seen several posters yell nostalgia pandering at everything, for this movie, for other sequels. Even before we saw anything from Force Awakens, people were saying that since Abrams is doing it and he's a "fanboy" that it'll be nothing but nostalgia pandering-- when it's very sensible, being a straight up sequel, to have characters and elements carry over.
So forgive me if I think that people are using it as a criticism, because that's exactly how its always felt to me. There's a new story, new main characters, there's even a new iconic droid in BB-8, and not just R2/3PO again (though they'll be in it). But people hear about the original actors coming back, and it's all just nostalgia pandering/retreading.
