Thats America in general. Pennsylvania is described as Pittsburgh and Philadelphia on the sides with Alabama in the middle(which also gets the nickname of "Pennsyltucky"). I've had my friend from California complain about how racist people get when you go out into the country.
More or less its rural people who aren't exposed to different cultures. (Though in this case Coon Rapids seems more suburban)
Indeed, that's everywhere in the entire country--drive a little further out of the city and everything changes very quickly, some places just change more drastically and quicker than others.
Oddly enough, I'm from PA and was about to post using that example; terrible, awful state, especially the western side of Pittsburgh where I'm from. Drive 20 minutes outside the city in select directions and you're in for some real country "hospitality."
