Fallout 4 - Reviews thread

One reviewer say it's a disappontment. He assumes they ran out of time and had to do compromises because of the new consoles. Crafting is meaningless. Story has only few highlights. Many boring quests even compared with Ubisoft standards.

about that...

I have seen the light..and shadows.

Sad to see them mentioning that the combat is bad. I am so fed up with all these "massive world" games having shit for actual game play. Yes, yes, we can cope with it, but just for once I would like a game where the game play matched the ambitions of the world building.

So the performance on consoles is not taken into account. Its a big part of the experience imo.

IGN said:
Fallout 4’s performance on both consoles is tolerable, but sometimes disappointing. We’ve seen frequent frame rate slowdowns well below the target of 30 when simply walking around the world, and hitches of a second or more that arise mostly after loading a new save or fast-traveling. The PC version has been much smoother in that regard, running between 40 and 60fps on Ultra settings on my GeForce GTX 970, and maintaining 60 when I lowered only the anti-aliasing settings.

Sounds fine but the loading times in videos I saw looked absolutely terrible. I cleared space on my SSD for this so hope that helps.

And this is why Bethesda won't invest in a new engine despite having years between releases...because it does not affect them in any way.

It's not about just the graphics but the performance and instability.

Also because switching engine doesn't magically solve all problems and make bugs go away. In fact, it could make it worse since they would be working from scratch. And most new game engines are updated versions of old ones anyway, so.

Glitchfest huh with major fps issues? Yeah, I'll pass.

Bethesda needs to clean up their act. With open-world games like Witcher 3 out there raising the bar, there is no excuse for Bethesda to deliver F4 looking like and playing like poo.

Have read 3 reviews and that was my impression as well, will wait until they fix

if the experience is worth 9.5 - what's the problem?

I've suffered bugs with Bethesda games before - doesn't make the games less than awesome in my eyes.

This.

I first played Fallout 3 on PS3, where everyone knows it was a goddamn mess. It was also one of the greatest experiences I had last gen despite the bugs.

Not everyone gets upset over bugs. He mentioned them in his review, so if they do bother you, he's giving you a heads up.

Can't believe I'm defending Gies.

I bought fo3 hated, new vegas hated, Skyrim hated and probably gonna buy this and will love right? I never learn 😂

Is it really that hard to believe that a game could be great in spite of its technical issues? I feel like some people just wait for the contrarian review to point at that one and say "See, this is the one that is accurate", when a multitude of reviews say the opposite.

With how many here loved Dragon's Dogma on consoles despite the abysmal performance, you'd think they'd believe it. Sometimes a game is more than the sum of its parts. Bethesda games have consistently had at-best-mediocre writing, storyline and graphics, and a lot of systems have been pretty janky but they do deliver an experience nobody else seems to be able to, and all these systems combine into something very interesting and fun. And I say that as someone who's consistently critical of their output.

Just watched the DF video on the framerate. Sub 30. Stays near 20 when you use something with lots of smoke effect i.e. gattling gun.

I'm still gonna play it, but MAN that is disappointing.

Ars Technica :

The ugly

This game. As in, this game looks U-G-L-Y, and it ain't got no alibi.

Good to see an outlet not afraid to call out the graphics. It really is stunning that after all these years Fallout 4 doesn't look like a huge step up.

Il probably wait for a sale and hope that modders fix most of the bugs and bad design decisions. That UI really needs to be replaced.

" Reviewers don't agree with the opinion I already formed about the game, they must be giving Bethesda a pass"

The same bullshit was flung around with MGSV.
Well, at least Bethesda didn't hold a Fallout review boot camp that didn't even give the reviewers enough time to finish the game.

Okay where's the opposite of this thing? We need it badly. Lol

Fuck.

Fallout 4 Positive Review Excuses & Complaints

The reviewer or website...
[]Gave Bethesda way too much credit for X
[]Gave *80-89* score, isn't even that high
[]Is a fanboy of "Bethesda style" games
[]Hasn't played enough for formula to grow stale
[]Isn't worthy of your trust
[]Not really a games review site anyway
[]Reviewed the PC version
[]Never heard of them
[]Doesn't know what a Fallout game should be
[]Accounted for modding support
[X]Didn't criticize Bethesda harshly enough
[]Hasn't experienced Fallout 4's competitors

Bonus:

[X]Stop enabling them by giving them 'free' passes anyways
[]Mods and mod support are completely irellevant anyways
[X]Review text implies a bad game anyways
[X]Bethesda games review well even when they're shit anyways

it's mostly irrelevant because this thread is going way smoother than anyone could have guessed for all parties
aight I'm out to play this shit

People can't even blame hardware for this. There are other open world games on consoles, that look AND run better than this game.

Everything else sounds good, though. I'm going to have to wait until they patch the PS4 version or when I can afford to jump on the PC bandwagon to try this out.

I don't get why so many people here were hoping for this game to review poorly. If your not interested in playing a game that's fine. But with Fallout 4 most people are interested in playing it, and it seems like that's for good reason based off these reviews.

I like Fallout when it does the things that I've loved Fallout for. Not take out critical elements for the sake of AAA prestige.

Then go play Fallout 1/2, because those days aren't coming back. This is the new Fallout, and with the cheques they're about to collect they're likely never going back.

I kinda wish I bought this over BLOPS3. Oh well, I'll wait for steam sale.

Isn't FO3 still quite expensive? I was going to buy that as I'd never played a fallout game before, but the price put me off. A cheaper FO3 might have warmed me up for FO4

Anyway.. Tomb raider tomorrow which will take a while, so in a couple of weeks if things seem fairly safe on PC I might take a look.

I haven't been following the game, what have they taken out?

The entire interesting and indepth dialogue system has been compeltely gutted and replaced with voice acting, giving you 4 super basic dialogue options to choose from that are worse than Mass Effect levels of vagueness.

In every previous FO game you know exactly what your character was going to say, there were TONS of skill checks for SPECIAL and skills in the dialogue, and that's all been severely cut down.

I always play FO as a smoothtalker who is smart and doesn't have to shoot guns often, and I'm having trouble finding a review that even mentions it.

I think Destructiod gave Lara Croft a 7.5 and this game a 7.5 on the same day. I wonder if that's their number for the day.

Great to see some positive reviews! Bummer to see some negative console performances, as that's what I will be playing on for now.

If you keep giving Bethesda a pass they just won't improve. Reviewers should be hammering them for negative aspects, not well it's just what you should expect, have a 9/10
