Fallout 4 - Reviews thread

I think that what happened here is that every site thought the other sites were going to tear to apart, so they gave it a 9 to stand out. But now we have a bunch of 9's everywhere and only destructoid keeping it real for the people.

This is one of my favorite positive review excuses so far! Along with:

"The review system is obviously broken"

Keep it coming guys. I am loving the hypocrisy. Some of these same people were posting and quoting the bingo cards before the reviews, preemptively attacking those defending the bad reviews.

Really weird that so many reviews don't mention framerate drops, loading times and the specially the new dialog (I've yet to see one give an opinion on it, good or bad).
Okay so this isn't me trying to go "oh man this review is invalid because he misremembered something from a 5 year old game," but New Vegas didn't involve amnesia at all, haha.
lol

Positive reviews but I'll have to play it for myself. Aside from New Vegas, I haven't been too keen on the past Bethesda games despite glowing praise from gaming outlets. Shame that the technical issues still persist and there isn't a lot of talk on the dialogue system. I wanted to know if skill checks still existed and if you could approach things differently if you had more proficiency in say, Intelligence or Perception. The social aspect, characters and interactions were my favourite parts of New Vegas and I hope that's still there in some capacity, though I'm not too optimistic about that being the case.

I'm enjoying the fact the before this thread, everyone was predicting the excuses the Bethesda fanboys were gonna make for poor reviews.

But, I mean, nobody was saying that. Everyone obv expected high scores because |[X]Bethesda games review well even when they're shit anyways|. These fine fellas were just expecting the game to get called out for its problems in the text. None of them went as far as to assume that review scores would be so divisive and low that those darn blind fanboys would file in here wielding their incoherent rage.

aight I swear this time I'm done

Cool scores. I'll put up with a buggy mess to play this just like I did Skyrim and FO on the PS3. Come at me!

Just glad that we now have a truly great next-gen, open world WRPG with which to wash away the bitter taste of Dragon Age: Inquisition and The Witcher 3.

Scores are still scores. Ultimately it is whether we enjoy the game or not and people enjoy games in different ways. It is not always about the graphics or story. Sometimes we play games to "escape" the real world and that is why immersion is important - which makes Bethsoft games successful l guess. I have played FO since the first iteration and it is always the post apocalyptic setting that captures me. Witcher 3 or Dragon Age can be superb open world games but not all gamers can indugle in a fantasy setting.

Again, how many people (outside of GAF) are bothered by good FPS and the bar high criteria we set here for modern gaming.

Sorry, English not my primary language. :)

Not bad, even if TH had literally no involvement in that.

And now this thread comes along and a large portion of it is bunch of people making excuses for the good reviews.

I'm interested to see how it turns out. I could never get into Fallout 3 or New Vegas but part of that was just because I really sucked at them.

Are they? It is a pretty chill thread all things considered. Not sure why some of you are so into drama.

Most people admitted gameplay would be fun. Folks had thoughts on the technical issues (which are present). Most were still going to buy the game, not sure why you are still going on like you're Bethesda PR.

I don't honestly believe people were expecting bad reviews for this. It's a Bethesda game. Every last one of their flagship RPGs in recent years has been a cobbled-together repetitive jankfest with no soul and they all hover around the 90 mark on Metacritic.

Why would this be different?

Having a read of a few of those reviews I may have to get this on the ole PC tonight. It is after all the first Bethesda Fallout game where I don't know the story inside and out months before release.

Anyone know how the PC version plays with a 360 controller?

There was that 5 minutes inside Doc Mitchell's house that I forgot that I loved to kill things, but thankfully his psychological evaluation reminded me quickly.

I'm all over the "BGS makes mediocre content" line of thinking but I guessed it would get a 91 in the metacritic getting thread. :P

When was the last time a non-yearly AAA game scored below like... 85? Does it even happen?

Resident Evil 6 got 67-74 depending on the version. The last two Gran Turismos were under 85.

Next year by black friday you should be able to buy the GOTY version in the cheap.

Not if it is anything like Skyrim you won't.

lol

Whats weird is the continued different experiences people have on supposedly like consoles. MANY people, including myself did not have the experience that say Digital Foundry is reporting. And if you look at the underlying meaning in that...its wild.

You know those Nuka Cola Quantums Target will be selling?

Mississippi Targets won't be selling them.

'Cos they're ALL in my garage.

So strange, you just reminded me I attended a New Years party you were at years ago. I completely forgot you lived in MS.

There better be some fucking Nuka Cola left at Target, damn it.

Really great to see pretty much everyone is enjoying the game. I need a sick day.

Xinput is standard across PC games now.

There are even wrappers available to get the DS4 or Gamecube controllers working with Xinput.

Ahahahahaha... good one.

In any case, its no surprise that it got high scores. Its Bethesda. Their brand matters more to their consumers than the quality of their games.

I tried several times to get into Fallout 3, but it never really clicked, and now I'm thinking maybe it was because of the combat. I'd love to get into the Fallout 4 hype with everyone else, but is the combat different this time around?

Yeah that is crazy. Bsiggs had it for a while and it sounded like he had a pretty good experience as well.

If he wasn't avoiding spoilers, everything about this game was in the books since like three days ago. Hours and hours of streams, full spoilers, etc.

Can't really pull the "you don't know anything about it" card here. We've seen it. It's the usual shit. Which is gonna be fun, but they absolutely are getting another pass from reviewers on mediocre writing, poor performance, stiff animations and general bugginess.

Contrarians gonna contrary.

Have you seen any video or screenshots of them?

I haven't seen a single one, and no reviewer has mentioned them.

I always play Fallout by going high charisma and talking my way out of everything.

I got the game already. There's a fair amount of those, and they're color coded by difficulty in the dialogue wheel from yellow to red.
