Fallout 4 - Reviews thread

A lot of it is Bethesda hate. I'd guess that some of it is the PC elite here can't stand the idea of a game not being the pure 1080 60fps. Maybe fallout is becoming too mainstream. I have no idea, but sadly I'm thinking this is more normal than I initially thought from GAF.

DISCUSSION OF FALLOUT 4'S FRAMERATE ISSUES ENDS IN RACISM ON POPULAR INTERNET VIDEO GAME MESSAGING BOARD 'NEOGAME FORUMS'

i kind of want to play but i'm not sure i can be bothered to play oblivion for the fourth time, and there are other games that i kinda wanna play instead

What a shame....

People actively hating on a game and wanting it to fail instead just ignoring it. What is the point? Why are you letting this game you have no interest in affect you so deeply? And at the same time trying to get people less excited for it. What do you gain by this? Who at Bethesda hurt you?

What a toxic community we have here. I am ashamed to be associated with some of you.

Bethesda and Bioware both have strong anti-fan groups here, despite everyone knowing what they're getting from both for close to a decade now. The game will still make GAF's aggregate top 5 in the GOTY thread. Same with Metal Gear Solid 5.

If you want more constructive discussion, the OT's tend to be pretty good. Especially after the first few days.

Iam kinda new here, is that a normal neogaf thread? Some posts are really shocking me, especially the "race" one.
What you want to keep in mind is that even though plenty of really good discussion takes place here, it's very easy for this or any forum on the internet to occasionally descend into caricature and unintentional self-parody. This video does a pretty good job of addressing why this happens so consistently and dramatically.

If you can, try to let it amuse you. If that's not an option I suggest avoiding it altogether.

Who's really hating on the game? I mostly see the frustration that fans of the series are still willing to put up the same exact bullshit they've dealt with for years.

uhhmm... the game still struggles with a growing savefile (according to Eurogamer) like Fallout 3 on PS3?

what the fuck Bethesda..? what the FUCK?

that shit completely ruined Fallout 3 for me in 2008. it was literally unplayable after my save got over 10mb or so, it would crash and hang ALL THE TIME. trying to play the DLC was the saddest gaming experience ever, i had literally hundreds of crashes and hang ups, and i could make myself dinner during a VATS sequence because it moved at about 1 frame per minute.

absolutely laughable if in 2015 they still release broken games like that. they should be ashamed.

Each copy of the game is the same. It's not like he obtained some magical copy of the game that has higher fps than the others. The fps drops are there, and it's apparent from any damn video you watch.

As the other guy said, this is not how videogames work. They are insanely, unfathomably complicated machines. What's on the disc is a million lines of information which react to every input you make.

Every step you take, every button you press, every item you pick up, door you open, person you talk to, every jump you make - every thing you do creates a 100% unique set of circumstances in that moment which may or may not lead to problems. Every single player will have an entirely different experience of bugs or glitches. The developer's late-development job is to polish the rules in the code to make the problems occur as rarely as possible and cover every eventuality. But it's still 100% dependent on the player, what they are doing, and what they have done.

Edit: we're not talking about consistent FPS here, it's FPS drops - which are even more indicative that it's a case-by-case thing.

Edit edit: and of course, yes, many games do have widespread FPS issues, but in games like this especially, it can still depend on what you do. Eg the memory leak issues from F03 and Skyrim PS3 based on your save file being large.

I'm very disappointed with these reviews. I was hoping that they would be much lower to teach lazy Bethesda a lesson. Maybe then they would stop using a 30 year old engine.

So what are the bets on how long the honeymoon period is going to last and when we'll see people actually looking at the game from a critical standpoint?
t.

Hard to say really. Sometimes it is really short, like with ffxiii. And some times it is really long, like with GTA v. I mean with gtav, you'll still get really angry policing of negative comments or criticisms.

If I had to guess, maybe by Christmas.

See this is one of the shittiest cop-out statements anyone can make. This is essentially saying we should be excusing criticism against these two companies because "Hey it's what they do, what do you expect?"

I obviously know what I expected, because that's why we're criticising them! To try and get them to improve it!

Fallout 4 doesn't have to be a 9/10 game. It could've been a 10/10 game! Me complaining doesn't mean I think the game should get 1s and 2s and Todd Howard should be burned at the stake, it means I see things that COULD be improved and would have ZERO detriment to ANYONE.

If there are people who DON'T notice framedrops, and people who DO notice framedrops, if Bethesda actually cared enough to fix it, wouldn't that just affect the people who DID notice, and in a positive way?

Like what the fuck guys.

Can I mute just the main character?

Or should i just wait for a mod that shows the true dialogue options and cuts the player voice acting out?

I imagine a lot of people WANT to be excited for it. A lot of people want to play it. But they can't because they expect a better standard. It's not exactly like the game is without a lot of fair criticism, and this is the thread to discuss it all.

Reviewers and gamers have tolerated Bethesda's technical failings in light of their gameplay and characters so far. Why would it change now?

Reviews don't matter much to me. After all, DA:I got praised to high heaven, and it's basically an MMO and everything I don't want in RPGs.

It seems like this is the classic Bethesda and Fallout experience, though, which is pretty much exactly what I was expecting. I'm down for that kind of RPG again. It's been a while.

Gaf has been really weird about this game, though. I'm not sure what's going on.

I think anyone who describes a game company as "lazy" should be banned from video games for like 30 days, with punishments increasing exponentially after that.

It's so good to see this game reviewing very well. I never had any doubts that i was going to love it, hell..just a small glimpse during E3 was enough for that. But for some reason i definitely was expecting some low reviews as well. Because maybe reviewers weren't happy that it wasn't doing anything new, had little new feautures or improvements.

By looking at these review scores, it sure sounds like there's plenty new in this game. I haven't read a single review and i can't wait to dive in this game.

Considering people are complaining about the game dipping from 30fps, and not 60, but yeah, sure, let's go with that. It's not like we need more excuses for both sides of the argument.

Referring to what has been happening for months, not in the last few days. Bethesda doesn't make technically great games. That's a turnoff to some gamers on here on that merit alone.

As for dipping under 30, yeah that's shitty. But that's not going to turn me to go commit some anti Fallout 4 crusade like others in here.

Eh?

It runs fine on the PC.

Games I finished on PS3:

Fallout 3
Crysis 2
Dark Souls 1/2
Far Cry 2/3

I think I'll be able to handle FO4 on PS4. I've been through some stuff.

I'm sure you'll enjoy FO4, but we should stop giving Bethesda a free pass when it comes to technical issues and bugs

Basically this

It's not a cop-out statement when there are people who are basically saying or keep repeating that Bioware makes shit now and that the golden age of Baldur's Gate is gone, they're no longer rpgs, etc...

Criticizing the game for its flaws is fine, and I encourage it. But if you're willfully ignoring the decently sized group of folks for both groups with either outright hate or devotion who can't seem to let go of a golden age for the developer then you are deluding yourself. There are people here whose sole purpose is to mock and/or laugh at the game/developer not getting 10/10s.

Though the framerate drops aren't a surprise, I'm not sure how we should feel about Bethesda's legacy of still releasing buggy games even on new hardware. =(

Looking forward to playing it eventually!

Nice of the PR departments to show up.

Im a sucker for these kinds of games. I never even bothered with the glitches when they happened to me in skyrim, fallout 3 and new vegas (they happened to me a lot less than people hype them to be). I just love to explore worlds and when the overall structure is good or great like the reviews say it is...then this is great. I spend months on these games going here and there with side quests and spend hours upon hours playing these.

I can only speak for myself so, for me, it's just a general sick and tiredness of the Bethesda formula. The glitchy and technical messes that are filled to the brim with content and atmosphere. It works for a lot of people but I don't feel like it works for me anymore.

The review scores are good but the text is telling me that very little has changed. I'm not dropping 60 bucks on these games anymore.

Holy shit

Agreed. Sure more games could use a bit more time, but to call the actual people lazy is a fucking insult. Considering the long hours the put in to deliver a game.

A place that completely blocks out relevant criticism looking to make the industry take steps forward is not the place I want to be.
