Fallout 4 PC Performance Thread

So, how bad is the game running on PC? I've got an i3770k, 8GB ram and a gtx 770 4GB, how well will it run at 1080p? Anyone have similar setup and can share their experiences?

Anybody else getting some weird shimmering effect on foliage when panning the camera? Not sure if it something in my set up, I do have my pc hooked to my tv but never saw this before. Running everything maxed, except godrays (on high), 1080p.

Here is my setup....
i7@4hz
Gtx980
16g ram
Hooked up to my 50inch Panasonic plasma.

i7 930 OC'd to 3.5ghz
980 ti
6GB Ram

What settings/performance would I be looking at?

I have something similar
i7 930 @ stock
970 GTX
6GB RAM (was worried about this before the game came out)

Graphics maxed out except Godrays on Medium and DoF on Standard
Stable 60fps @ 1080
Tested using FRAPS, not sure if that is what other people are using nowadays
I'm normally used to 2560x1440 so I'm definitely going to tinker with the settings later

This is slightly better than my setup and my performance has been ~45fps or higher at the same settings.

i7 920 @ stock
GeForce 760
6GB RAM

I'm convinced the Samsung 840 SSD is making a huge difference. Best upgrade I ever made to this aging rig, which, thanks to the beefy, reliable thermals of the Coolermaster HAF 932, has stood the test of time.

Using TAA clears it up at the expense of a little blur. I compensate for that by using LumaSharpen in SweetFX. Looks great.

I have a GTX 670.

Mix high/ ultra ( godrays low ) with 60 fps 90% of the time... Lowest drop 52 for now...

Just less, just as they said.
Might have lied about tons of shit, but not that.

I haven't been keeping tabs on Fallout 4 but I had assumed that they'd have worked out keeping loading zones out of their game since they're dealing with more powerful hardware.

Granted I thought the same thing when skyrim came out.

I7 4790k @ 4.4ghz
16gb ddr3 1866mhz ram
gtx 980 Ti Slightly overclocked
1440p resolution
Everything including God rays at max settings.

I honestly haven't noticed any kind of frame rate dips so far. It's been a virtually solid 60 fps experience so far. I haven't gotten into any heavy fire fights yet, so that could change no doubt.

Also the game looks nice. I'm glad I didn't get swept up by the whole "This game looks like shit" bandwagon.

That shadow distance setting, damn. As everyone else, I was having huge fps issues around the Corvega Assembly plant near Lexington. I dropped shadow distance from high to medium, and my fps went from 33-40 to 58-60.

For fun, I tried changing every other setting but shadows to minimum (with both shadow settings at high) and I was still at 33-40 fps. Made no difference at all. Shadow distance medium vs. high has no effect on CPU/GPU usage either, neither is even close to being maxed with either setting. It's just a huge fps loss you can't do seemingly anything about except suffer through or drop shadow distance to medium.

Can anyone manage good fps around the factory with shadow distance at high? Try moving around a bit if your fps remains solid 60, climbing up and looking down etc.

Well shucks. I thought that I might be able to get 60ish in UHD but it doesn't look like that will be the case considering that SLI apparently doesn't offer much of a performance boost.

I was just hoping there would be no more framerate fuckery.
Previous games were a bitch for me, and this one will keep the tradition alive.

Never played a Bethesda game as long as Oblivion, when i still had a 60Hz screen...

PS: lower Shadow Quality too folks. Ultra to high is at least 20FPS gained.

Yeah that really sucks. I'll be playing this on my TV which is locked to 60.

I knew god rays where a resource hog but I didn't realize how much.

Issue seems to arise if you get around 100fps, not just any number above 60fps. But yeah, could be something else, but anecdotally my problem got solved as soon as I set the framelimit, and it seems to be the general fix most people that encounter the issue do.

Or the issue is less common with G-sync on?

Where do you set the framelimit?

So I never came back to this thread after the game unlocked because... well, you can probably guess why. I had shit to do in the wasteland.

Anyway my results in testing w/ downsampling was that my 4790k/970 combo wasn't able to lock @ 30 FPS at 3x or 4x DSR. I wound up using 2715 x 1527 (the DSR base for 2x 1080p) with everything maxed (including keeping TAA enabled) and the IQ is still pretty fantastic and has been dead locked at 30 FPS from all my tests.

Yes, I set 60Hz on the desktop, but also set in the Nvidia Fallout 4 profile to use the application's refresh rate, else GSync forces 144Hz (default to maximum available).

Hmm, when I do that I get like 700+ FPS on loading screens and I'm scared it's going to blow up my video card.

God rays to low, you won't notice the visual difference.
And Shadow Quality to medium, massive framerate boost between ultra and high.
Funny thing is, medium shadow quality looks closer to ultra than high.

Just to confirm how demanding Ultra Godrays really are (max settings @1080p):

Specs:

OS: Windows 10 64-bit
nVidia Driver: 358.91
Motherboard: ASRock Z87 Extreme4
Power Supply: EVGA SuperNOVA 750W G2
CPU: i7-4770k @4.2GHz (HT Enabled)
Heatsink: Hyper 212 Evo w/2x Noctua NF-F12 Fans
GPU: GIGABYTE GTX 980 Ti G1 Gaming 6GB
RAM: 16GB G.SKILL Sniper @1866MHz
SSD (OS): 256GB Samsung 850 Pro
HDD (Games): 1TB Western Digital Caviar Black 7200 RPM

As can be seen, it's using 98% of my GPU with max settings @1080p. Now, with everything maxed, but Godrays to High, I can get 60 fps 95% of the time @1440p.

This game has a massive GPU usage range; I'll average 45% GPU usage the majority of the time, and then *boom,* it's up to 99% usage out of nowhere in certain situations.

It's bugged! Like the poster a couple of pages back showed your FPS can tank when looking at nothing. The Ultra setting for Godrays has a large performance hit, but that also just might be lack of optimization. It'll be interesting to see if Bethesda can get it better optimized.

I have G-Sync on.

If the issue doesn't crop up until you break 100fps, that would explain it. I'm not hitting that at all even indoors (1440p on a single 970, not surprising), so perhaps that's why I haven't encountered problems.

I will say that I haven't noticed any speed increases in game logic and animations when going above 60, though. Perhaps those only crop up if you go beyond 100? Maybe I just missed it and those ghouls aren't supposed to be quite that quick. :P

I've got 980Ti's here(only using one card though). I first encountered this problem at the Red Rocket terminal and capping my fps to 110 got me past that terminal. I've since had to cap my fps to 80 as I had terminals freeze at 100/90fps. I hope I don't have to keep going lower...

wait, so bethesda still has loading zones for interiors?

That's rich.

I've got Fallout 4 installed on an SSD and it takes ~5 seconds to load a game, and any interior/exterior loading seems like 2-3 seconds tops.

How has the performance been for people with an R9 290X so far? I have that (along with an i5-4690K) so I'm just trying to see how things are at the moment. It'll be a while before I can get the game so I know driver updates and patches will happen by then but curious how things are initially. I know some settings have to be adjusted (god rays and shadows).

Right from the start I encountered constant microstuttering (most noticable when strafing left or right) and input lag despite running at a solid 60fps. Tinkering with the .ini file and forcing v-sync within nvidia's control panel didn't help, but once I switched from fullscreen to borderless windowed (at native 2560x1600) via the Fallout 4 launcher it was buttery smooth. For years I've read about people doing this, but it's the first time *I've* ever needed to. Weird stuff. Just echoing this particular solution for others to keep in mind...

Titan X, Windows 10, 2500k @ 4.3ghz, 16GB, Samsung SSD 850 pro

Fixed it for me as well. Silky smooth now. Thanks.

My game is stuck at 98% on Steam. I DL'ed it last night, can't just started Steam after work, and stuck at 98%. Anyone else have this?

Can someone just highlight where the hell the fullscreen option is? Seriously, I feel embarrassed and confused by this shit. It will only go into windowed mode no matter what I do.

Could really use some assistance with my sound

Music, gun sounds, most effects come out much louder in my right headphone, dialogue and some sound effects come out even in both.

My headphones are not broken, work perfect in other games and elsewhere

Think there's something in some kind ini file I can mess with?

The fact that it's so silky smooth elsewhere makes those areas with performance hits even more annoying. I can maybe understand places like the marketplace, but some of the areas that tank the frame rate just don't make any sense.

4690 - 290X here.

Stable so far 1080p 60fps at Ultra except godrays, shadow and one of the distance sliders. Some sections will dip but that seems common to many people.

Would still suggest waiting for 2+ patches before jumping in.

thanks for the response...yeah, seems like a lot of the issues (in one way or another) are shared between people no matter the GPU company they have in their PC

I'm in the same boat my friend. :(

Gonna try adaptive sync, but I'm not expecting magic.

I'm not too bummed since I played through the witcher 3 before the patches at 30 allowed me to play near 60 even with gameworks crap and a high NPC cound a high foliage.

I don't see any 2x titan x impressions but I'm guessing that it'll be close to the 980 ti.

I havent noticed it before but all of a sudden i am now. When the framerate drops the game significantly slows down. Like time slows down. You can hear your foot steps at a slower pace and everything. I guess the simulation is tied to the framerate completely. That really sucks, idk waht to do as the game constantly goes from 60-40 all the time, the game is running at two different speeds.

Will test out tonight with 4770k and 980ti. Hoping for 1440/60 with everything max except god rays and going to see if Ugrid 11 or 9 can keep the fps locked at 60~ish.

How did it work out? Was ugrid 11 or 9 feasible for mostly 60 fps? What is your exact god ray setting btw?

According to this one guy on Reddit the physical version indeed does only come on one disc that contains about 5GB of data, requiring a 19GB download. This is bullshit if you ask me.

What's most surprising is Bethesda couldn't even ship the game on a dual-layer DVD like it did Skyrim or Dishonored (which each fit on one disc).

Anybody willing to ship me a Steam backup on some DVD-Rs if I just buy a Steam code?

Isn't it in the game's launcher settings? I don't think you can access it in-game.

How do other cities compare to Lexington, frame rate wise? I'm getting just under 30FPS on ultra and I'm thinking about dropping shadow distance if a lot of the game runs like this or worse.
