It is possible, though that depends on your drivers. Most don't allow it as it might cause serious harm to a laptop not meant to handle the heat it generates.

It is possible, though that depends on your drivers. Most don't allow it as it might cause serious harm to a laptop not meant to handle the heat it generates.

It's really cool to see that some lines are getting refreshed with Skylake processors but I think I'm maxed out on Maxwell (Pun intended). I'd like to see what these laptops will do with Nvidia's upcoming Pascall technology.

Are there any rumors regarding when mobile Pascal chips might make it to market? How long was it for Maxwell to go from desktop GPUs to the mobile variants?

I went with a general use Surface Pro 3 as my daily driver but I definitely want to move on to an MSI laptop for my next system so I can really game. I was tempted to pull the trigger on the new models that came out this month but with Pascall supposedly out next year I want to wait one more upgrade cycle. Intel just did one. Now I want to wait on Nvidia to maximize my purchase with new tech.

I need some help finding a good laptop to buy. I'm not up-to-date with this stuff. My info:

Country: US
Max Budget: $2000
Size: Nothing larger than 16'', lighter weight is better but I value performance over lightweight
Planned usage: I'd like to play Overwatch at high (?) settings. I'm not really a PC gamer at the moment, but I'd like for this new laptop to enable me to get into PC gaming. So while I don't expect to play everything at the highest settings, I'd like to play some modern games on it. I don't know if I'm expecting too much.

Other requirements:

• at least 1080p, excellent quality screen.
  
• Build quality must be good. This 2012 vaio I currently own has horrible build quality, with the "finish" or coating peeling off, etc.
  
• Obviously, good battery life is a plus, but not really essential.
  
• I'd like this laptop to last me like ~5 years.
  
• No bloatware is preferable.

Sounds like a pretty good laptop for 2010. You have problems running google chrome? Do you think your laptop would have faired just as well with an integrated graphics chip?

Could Dell add a number pad on the XPS for me, you think?

There seems to be something stopping them from making high capacity, 7200 RPM laptop drives, at least in the 2.5" laptop format.

This is normal, it's because the ingame FPS lock isn't perfect and isn't in sync with your monitor. You have to use VSync to get perfect 60FPS, but that causes input lag.
Issues like this are why people use tools like MSI Afterburner to externally limit the framerate. Afterburner 60FPS limit + fullscreen VSync = perfect 60FPS with minimal input lag.

It looks great, until you notice the "USD/CAD" option. Then when you switch it to CAD, they charge even more than just the flat exchange rate at the moment.

I mean I get the pricing is fair in US dollars, but the canadian dollar and our near required dependence on getting this stuff from the US makes this a tough pill to swallow.

The only canadian seller I can find that allows me to avoid the horrendous exchange rate is Eurocom, but I've heard some not wonderful things about them (although I'm pretty sure they just sell Clevo rebadges).

Edit: So trying to build a similar system (albiet with the NP8657 as a base instead of the NP8677), Eurocom "seems" like it would be around $200-300 cheaper, but apparently at the cost of a 1 year warranty instead of 2, no dead pixel policy that I can find..... yeah I'm just going to have to eat the cost from xotic. Even with the exchange rate they still end up being the cheapest out of the options. Reflex seems to charge a premium on the exchange rate as well.

My bad, I totally missed that little currency button at the top. That certainly changes things.

imo, Eurocom has been a solid company for a while. They had a bad rap years ago, after one particular situation, but that's blown over pretty well.

I have no qualms with recommending a purchase from Eurocom.

Both Dell and HP are bringing 4K IPS 17.3'' screens to their workstations as well.

I'm not looking for a gaming laptop, but my girl wants a $300 laptop for browsing, skype, and light photo editing. The people on notebookreview are pushing me to get a used business class laptop like a Lenovo T 400 or 500 series, but I'm worried about hardware failures getting a 3-4 year old laptop. I did find a T420 with an i5 and a one year warranty on Amazon for $250. The warranty helps, but then I'm also worried about battery life.

Do you have any other thoughts or suggestions?

So I bought that laptop from ebuyer - hassle with the courier, arrived late, dead pixel and the disk tray kept opening its own. Suffice to say I'm returning it today.

I'm upping my budget to £6/700 (I'm happy to push 800 if the extra is worth it - just means I'm on beans and rice for a few weeks) - and I'm not ruling out PC World since it's down the road (and I need a gaming laptop for work.)

GS line is ultra thin. Makes them more portable, but they'll have worse speakers. The GS also have IPS panels.

That's the only real difference.

Thanks. I settled with the gs60 1080p laptop, got one just now at Frys. I thought the apache laptops were just too heavy/bulky when trying them out earlier.

This is my first time owning a laptop with this much power so hopefully this one was a good purchase.

Yeah, probably my friend pretty much convinced me because they think Dell isn't the greatest in terms of build quality, so I'd just go with whatever fits your needs more. (They really seemed to hate Dell.) The price for the one I linked has been fluctuating a lot the past few days so it was cheaper.

Anyone actually received or know someone who's received one of the MSI GT72S Dragon 004's with the desktop GPU? I've had one on pre-order since October and still don't have a real shipping estimate, and it seems that outside of review outlets there haven't been terribly many shipped out.

Thinking I might want to cancel my order and just look for a Black Friday/holiday deal, if it's going to be that late in arriving anyway.

Just an update since I've had this for about a month and a half now: this thing is a beast. Loving it so far. Been playing Fallout 4 without any FPS drops on high settings + plenty of effects, WoW is still running great, etc.

Hopefully MSI keeps up the good work. Will definitely go back to them in the future once this thing gets old.
