2016+ Gaming Laptop Thread: Embracing Pascal's Wafer (Please Read OP)

While checking amazon I was so excited when I thought I saw a 7200 RPM 2TB hard drive but it turns out it was a spec mistake. Man, any chances of improvements in that field? They have yet to surpass 1 TB for gaming grade HDs, and even then they're still not as good as the 500 GB ones.

Sorry to bump this old reply but I have a 970m, can you overclock this 3D card? I thought it was impossible on a laptop?

It is possible, though that depends on your drivers. Most don't allow it as it might cause serious harm to a laptop not meant to handle the heat it generates.

It seems I can do it with 135Mhz.

It's really cool to see that some lines are getting refreshed with Skylake processors but I think I'm maxed out on Maxwell (Pun intended). I'd like to see what these laptops will do with Nvidia's upcoming Pascall technology.

Are there any rumors regarding when mobile Pascal chips might make it to market? How long was it for Maxwell to go from desktop GPUs to the mobile variants?

I went with a general use Surface Pro 3 as my daily driver but I definitely want to move on to an MSI laptop for my next system so I can really game. I was tempted to pull the trigger on the new models that came out this month but with Pascall supposedly out next year I want to wait one more upgrade cycle. Intel just did one. Now I want to wait on Nvidia to maximize my purchase with new tech.

It's been well over a month and a half since the announcement of 980 laptops. Have there been any other price announcements outside of XOTIC's one for three grand? Because I hope that Clevo one will be cheap enough.

I need some help finding a good laptop to buy. I'm not up-to-date with this stuff. My info:

Country: US
Max Budget: $2000
Size: Nothing larger than 16'', lighter weight is better but I value performance over lightweight
Planned usage: I'd like to play Overwatch at high (?) settings. I'm not really a PC gamer at the moment, but I'd like for this new laptop to enable me to get into PC gaming. So while I don't expect to play everything at the highest settings, I'd like to play some modern games on it. I don't know if I'm expecting too much.

Other requirements:
  • at least 1080p, excellent quality screen.
  • Build quality must be good. This 2012 vaio I currently own has horrible build quality, with the "finish" or coating peeling off, etc.
  • Obviously, good battery life is a plus, but not really essential.
  • I'd like this laptop to last me like ~5 years.
  • No bloatware is preferable.
Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

I am contemplating whether to buy this laptop:

or this:
http://us.toshiba.com/computers/laptops/satellite/s50/S50T-CST3GX1

I want it to last at least 5 years. Will having a good gpu increase its longevity if I don't game? For example, do you see any case where I may need a good gpu for non-gaming purposes, like youtube? What about in the future? Will applications start utilizing gpus for non-gaming purposes? I will mainly use this laptop for school and work, meaning Microsoft office, video streaming, adobe....every application not related to video games. I wanted a laptop that could convert into a tablet for when I am in bed wanting to read or watch videos while lying down. I wanted something large enough so that it will also include a number pad because I work with numbers a lot. I also want something future proof. Any help would be great. I was looking at the Yoga 15 thinkpad, but it doesn't utilize the sixth generation i7s.

My price range is around $1000-$1300

Just doesn't make sense on a 15", it'll be more of a nuisance than anything.
I guess your right. I guess the FHD model might be a better deal in that case.

Another question: I was looking at xotic's site and was wondering. A lot of the gaming laptops there state 2-3hrs of battery life. Is that while gaming or everyday, non gaming operation? Other than the xps, I've been looking at the msi gs40 for a more gaming focused laptop too

I have been surviving with a Dell Studio 1458 since 2010.

First gen i7 if Im not mistaken.
4 Gb of Ram
ATI HD 4530 Mobility Radeon(512 MB VRAM)
500 GB Hdd(7200 rpm)

And is pretty decent except for any 3D game, chrome, or rendering videos.

I think the first non-gaming app I have had issues is with Android Studio.

If you decide to get a regular laptop:

You can get the new XPS 15 (FHD, GTX 960m 2GB, i7) model for around $1200 + tax depending on the representative (along with free 2 day shipping & 5% e-gift card).
http://www.dell.com/us/business/p/x...oc=cax15w10ph1631&model_id=xps-15-9550-laptop

Use chat and ask for a price match. Tell them to customize the Lenovo Y700 to match the XPS 15's specs. I ordered my XPS 15 yesterday and the rep gave me a $1200 offer. Only had to chat with 2 reps to get to that price.

Sounds like a pretty good laptop for 2010. You have problems running google chrome? Do you think your laptop would have faired just as well with an integrated graphics chip?

Wait, so you bought a Lenovo with the same specs as the xps using price match?

After an awful time with Lenovo, my girlfriend needs another gaming laptop. The issue is she doesn't want to spend more then $1100, which is making the search a bit difficult...

I managed to find this laptop
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834152949
which seems to fit the bill pretty well, but I am not sure if I can get better (or if this is not as good a deal as I think it is). What do you guys think? Is MSI typically an okay brand, or should I avoid it?

For reference we live in Canada, which has made the search a little trickier in terms of good deals

Wait, so you bought a Lenovo with the same specs as the xps using price match?

Ah, I saw the confusion.

I bought the new XPS 15. I told Dell to price match the Lenovo and they quoted me with a better offer.

There's no way to give them a direct link to the Y700 with the same specs as the XPS, so they have to click "Customize and Add" and manually do it.

Wow, I think that's what I'll do then. One question though. For some reason, when I think of dell, I don't think of quality. Do their products last and are they good quality?
I've been doing a lot of research on different laptops for the last month, as I was preparing to buy one for myself. From forums, reviews, and reddit, their XPS lineup gets a ton of praise and it's always one of the top recommendations in it's price range. I don't have any experience with their XPS laptops yet, but I think it should definitely be one of the best Windows laptop options judging by the user and media reviews.

I want a number pad on my laptop and noticed that the pictures of the XPS showed no number pad but the pictures of the new inspiron 15 does have a number pad. How is the inspiron compared to the xps in your opinion? Could I price match it in any way? I am totally new to this price matching tool and Dell. Could Dell add a number pad on the XPS for me, you think?
Here is the link to the laptop I'm looking at:
http://www.dell.com/us/business/p/inspiron-15-7559-laptop/pd?ref=PD_OC
The highest end without the 4k.
Thank you for all the help so far. I understand helping me is a lot of work.

Newegg just posted a deal for an Ideapad for $700

Here is the link.

I'm thinking about picking it up to do a couple things: 1)Go back and forth from law school all the damn time. 2)play Hots and maybe SC2 when I'm on the road.

What do you guys think about the value for the price?

Am I missing something or is the only difference between these two are the screen sizes? Prices are exactly the same minus the 15" being on sale

Well Xotic is selling Clevos, so you'll see no cheaper prices from anyone else.

AFAIK, those battery estimates are for like.... web browsing.

No, Dell can't add a numpad. If that's what you need, Inspiron it is.

Almost literally no point in taking that, over this Dell.

It's really unfortunate. Only way right now to get large storage at high speeds is via ssd drives, and no way am I paying more for that than I payed for my laptop.

Hmm anyone knows if it's normal that when I put like world of warcraft in windowed full screen without vsync it doesn't feel good? It's locked at 60 with the ingame fps lock but still it doesn't feel well and the framerate jumps to 61,62 at times. This is with other games aswell.. Is this an issue with my laptop or with the games itself?

This is normal, it's because the ingame FPS lock isn't perfect and isn't in sync with your monitor. You have to use VSync to get perfect 60FPS, but that causes input lag.
Issues like this are why people use tools like MSI Afterburner to externally limit the framerate. Afterburner 60FPS limit + fullscreen VSync = perfect 60FPS with minimal input lag.

Man the canadian exchange rate + tax here in Nova Scotia is agonizing for trying to buy a laptop.

A 970m equipped machine is going to run me at least $2000.

I've been looking at the NP8677-S but with the IPS G-sync screen, and rough math on the exchange rate + duty fee I'm going to end up handing over $2300 CDN.

Feels bad man.

It looks great, until you notice the "USD/CAD" option. Then when you switch it to CAD, they charge even more than just the flat exchange rate at the moment.

I mean I get the pricing is fair in US dollars, but the canadian dollar and our near required dependence on getting this stuff from the US makes this a tough pill to swallow.

The only canadian seller I can find that allows me to avoid the horrendous exchange rate is Eurocom, but I've heard some not wonderful things about them (although I'm pretty sure they just sell Clevo rebadges).

Edit: So trying to build a similar system (albiet with the NP8657 as a base instead of the NP8677), Eurocom "seems" like it would be around $200-300 cheaper, but apparently at the cost of a 1 year warranty instead of 2, no dead pixel policy that I can find..... yeah I'm just going to have to eat the cost from xotic. Even with the exchange rate they still end up being the cheapest out of the options. Reflex seems to charge a premium on the exchange rate as well.

Edit 2: Yeah jesus Reflex, they charge $0.69US per $1 CAD, when the actual exchange rate is $0.75.

Hey, I recently got a ASUS ROG G751JT-WH71(WX) 17.3"

Does anyone have any recommendations for a nice backpack? I'm trying not to spend an absurd amount of money on a backpack. Right now, I'm looking at https://www.amazon.com/dp/B002WOBBVO/?tag=neogaf0e-20 but $100? :-(

It's likely that I will be moving overseas from the US so I need something that can carry it around as well as some other stuff. Any suggestions would be awesome. Thanks!

My bad, I totally missed that little currency button at the top. That certainly changes things.

imo, Eurocom has been a solid company for a while. They had a bad rap years ago, after one particular situation, but that's blown over pretty well.

I have no qualms with recommending a purchase from Eurocom.

$100 for that really isn't bad at all. I've been thinking about buying that exact bag, for my GT72.

I just recommended a budget laptop to friend:

i5-6300HQ
GTX960m
8gb DDR3L
15" 1080p

Hopefully it can run Battlefront decently at medium.

K.Jack, I posted a while ago (page 71) that I needed a new laptop for college. Well, I waited too long to make the purchase and college is almost here (next year). This it the PC you recommended me;
This is what I had posted;
Looking for a laptop. I'm lost on where to even start. It is for college and note taking, watching movies/Netflix on my downtime. It is absolutely not for gaming at all. I prefer it if was windows (10). Best laptop for college? My budget is around $600-$800. I assume that a good price point if it isn't for gaming? It is for IT.
I'd like to add that that I will indeed be playing a single game, CSGO. That's all, lol. But CSGO isn't too demanding. However, unfortunately the laptop is out of stock. Since black friday and the holiday sales are coming soon, is there anything I should be looking for or keeping an eye out for? If it's too early to ask, I understand. I could ask later if that's the case.

Something very similar is available, and it's cheaper than my first recommendation.

Man I wish msi would make a 15 inch laptop with the 980m with no DVD drive.

Use the space for more batter or something

You aren't alone in that.

Both Dell and HP are bringing 4K IPS 17.3'' screens to their workstations as well.

Speaking of workstations, HP's ZBook Studio is looking pretty fine. Yes, no Infinity display like the Precision 5510 so it lacks that wow factor, but it's barely larger and has a better collection of ports.

So I bought that laptop from ebuyer - hassle with the courier, arrived late, dead pixel and the disk tray kept opening its own. Suffice to say I'm returning it today.

I'm upping my budget to £6/700 (I'm happy to push 800 if the extra is worth it - just means I'm on beans and rice for a few weeks) - and I'm not ruling out PC World since it's down the road (and I need a gaming laptop for work.)

So I'm looking in here

And here at the moment.

These two are the ones standing out so far - but I might be wrong! This and This.

Hello, LaptopGAF.

My dear friend died after few years of work. I wastn't really pleased with him, but still. The name of his was Asus K53SC. I need a new one.

Thing is, i need a laptop to play some games. Why laptop? I live in another city and building a PC will not be worth it and will cost me more. Also, i love laying in bed with my laptop, if you know what i mean.

Location: Russia
$$$: 600-700 bucks, maaaaaaaaaaaaybe more
Websites:
http://www.domnouta.ru/

or you can aim on amazon / etc websites. i just need to see models and will decide then

I'm not all-in graphics, but i need something to handle 720p with at least 30fps on low-med settings.

I saw DELL INSPIRON 5748 and kinda liked it, but maybe you can throw something at me. I am thinking about 8GB and GeForce *40m or maybe *50, if there's a chance to get one chep. Please help :)

I'm not looking for a gaming laptop, but my girl wants a $300 laptop for browsing, skype, and light photo editing. The people on notebookreview are pushing me to get a used business class laptop like a Lenovo T 400 or 500 series, but I'm worried about hardware failures getting a 3-4 year old laptop. I did find a T420 with an i5 and a one year warranty on Amazon for $250. The warranty helps, but then I'm also worried about battery life.

Do you have any other thoughts or suggestions?

Restated in the required format:
Country: USA
Maximum budget: $300 ($250 preferable)
Max size: 15" max, but she does want portability
Planned usage: web browsing, skype, light photo editing
She wants around 6 hours of battery life minimum and would prefer a SSD if possible

You're going to need to provide some links to Russian stores.

That Dell looks great. Best sub $800 laptop right now?

Yes, I feel so.

What's the main difference between MSI's apache lineup and their gs laptops (gs60, gs70 etc) and why are the apache ones normally cheaper with what looks to be the same specs?

What is the consensus on this model, seems pretty good for the price:

Great laptop.

GS line is ultra thin. Makes them more portable, but they'll have worse speakers. The GS also have IPS panels.

That's the only real difference.

Thanks. I settled with the gs60 1080p laptop, got one just now at Frys. I thought the apache laptops were just too heavy/bulky when trying them out earlier.

This is my first time owning a laptop with this much power so hopefully this one was a good purchase.

What would you say is the better between this and the Dell, K Jack? Sorry to bother again. Guessing the Dell because of the 4gb 960?

Yeah, probably my friend pretty much convinced me because they think Dell isn't the greatest in terms of build quality, so I'd just go with whatever fits your needs more. (They really seemed to hate Dell.) The price for the one I linked has been fluctuating a lot the past few days so it was cheaper.

Anyone actually received or know someone who's received one of the MSI GT72S Dragon 004's with the desktop GPU? I've had one on pre-order since October and still don't have a real shipping estimate, and it seems that outside of review outlets there haven't been terribly many shipped out.

Thinking I might want to cancel my order and just look for a Black Friday/holiday deal, if it's going to be that late in arriving anyway.

Just an update since I've had this for about a month and a half now: this thing is a beast. Loving it so far. Been playing Fallout 4 without any FPS drops on high settings + plenty of effects, WoW is still running great, etc.

Hopefully MSI keeps up the good work. Will definitely go back to them in the future once this thing gets old.
