Digital Foundry: Hands-on with PS4's PlayStation 2 emulation

Interesting question. FWIW, you can stream the games.

Edit: How does the emulation work without any fw update? @dark

I just wanna somehow play Shadow Hearts on my Vita. XD
Although, if streaming works it might be possible.

Do we have anyone on this forum who bought the bundle and also has a vita? They could check.

I'm hoping it's only taking this long because they want most or all of the PS1 & PS2 titles already available on different platforms digitally to work well & be available day 1. Though I guess some of those could have more of a problem with licensing and whatnot and not all that much to do with problematic emulation.

Licensing has always been what holds back legacy digital games on PSN.

It seems like those games are exclusive to owners of SW Battlefront bundle (even though they were available for PS3 some time ago).

Fuck :/

EDIT: I think Sony is quiet about that, because MS has better solution than them - emulating newer console. Or maybe I'm wrong. Still, I was suprised to read the title of the article at first.

PS2 easier to emulate than PS3. Don't know if I would say better but different instead.

FWIW, you can run an emulator as an application, it doesn't need to be integrated as part of the firmware.

Otherwise, it might have been introduced as a stealth 3.0 feature.

My favorite PS1 and PS2 games are games that have virtually no chance of ever being released again (licensing issues), so I'm really only interested if there's disc support.

Someone also said that a lot of those older PS1/PS2 classics would likely not be readily available on PS4 since PS4 was probably not involved in the original contracts or something, so that's disappointing if true.

PS4 just can't handle smooth clouds. PS2 still alpha alpha.

As an owner of the slightly less awful now that I own it Vader PS4 I can vouch that it really is God-tier emulation.

Bravo Sony!

I hope they have the PS4/PS3/PSVita crossbuy system up and running day and date of official BC release. I think its obvious they will support that

Do these support trophies as well? If so, that old rumor is definitely true and this will most likely be formally announced at PSX

No. PS Now is for PS3 games. PS2 and PS1 games would never be on PS Now.

Also PS Now was never meant to solve backwards compatibility.

Makes no sense to not have PS1 and PS2 games added to the PSNow library.

I really hope people lower their expectations. There's no way you're gonna be able to pop in a old disc and play these. It's a safe bet to expect to pay $10 for these, but it's still gonna be awesome :)

This is pretty awesome!

I'm really hoping they'll let us use PS2 discs, since I really want to replay Silent Hill 2 and 3, and after the HD Collection debacle, I know there's no way Konami is rereleasing those on the PSN Store.

I think Sony will do crossbuy but like you said popping in a disc and playing old PS2 games is out of the question.

It makes complete sense when you consider that Sony has to pay for the continuous bandwidth to stream those games rather than allowing a one time purchase with no upkeep. A local emulator is easier, but in the case of the PS3 not viable.

There is a precedent against your argument, though:

Every PS3 is compatible with PS1 discs.

Uh, i didn't say anything about that.

This whole thing has only been about PS Classics(aka digital ISO wrappers) from the very start.

PS1 and PS2 classics will be supported, that's what Sony's new policy is from what i've gathered of their actions.

WTF???

Hope it's good enough to run tri-Ace games this time around, those titles are a pain in the neck to run on non-native hardware.

If PS1/PS2 games were to appear on PS Now why would Sony go to the trouble of creating an emulator for those games?

I'believe the purpose of PSNow is to be the "netflix" of videogames. It is not to provide BC to the PS4. PSNow is compatible with PS3, PSV, Sony and Samsung TVS. It's supposed to come to more TVs, iOS, and Android IIRC.

If what you guys are implying was Sony's true end goal, PSNow would not be compatible with any of the above, especially not the PS3.

This could basically herald a Star Ocean 3 PS2 Classics release with actual HD res :O

OH MY STARZ
