Digital Foundry: Hands-on with PS4's PlayStation 2 emulation

disc recognition and the ability to bring over PSN PS2claasics are going to make or break this feature. PSnow died a quiet death because of horrible pricing and no disc support.

They will support digital classic support for cross playstation ecosystem titles i'd think

Is it being rendered in 1080p or original resolution?

THe internal res of the emulator is apparently about 4 times the native res of the original PS2's basic internal res

Nah they're not.
While disc recognition would be a great feature, it wouldn't be a major point as classics also sold before without it.

And there are hardly many PS2 classics on the PSN yet, so I bet they will carry over.
This isn't a situation comparable to PSnow which died due other reasons.

Twice the resolution, four times the pixels.

Can't wait for more details. I hope this brings renewed interest in getting PS1/2 classics on PSN.

If we get native PS1 and PS2 emulation, I really hope Sony sticks with a similar architecture for future consoles. With the number of PS3 titles that have been remastered, they could have a continually large library from here on out if they have proper PS4 BC.

It's real! It's fucking real!

Now just let us put the original discs into our PS4's and play them emulated in higher resolution (because I somehow doubt Sony will make an effort to release all of the PS2's niche games digitally).

Oh boy. At least the already available catalog of PS Classics on PSN is going to be there.

Makes sense

Forget uncharted and dreams and horizon and Rime and FFXV and DQXI and Nier 2 and such. I just want a new system to play last systems games lol.

Some people already have libraries of 100+ PS3 games, some many more. I know my friend has like 300 games on PS3 and whilst he has a PS4 and is excited about the games you listed, having PS3 emulation would have been an absolute sell to him and I feel many others would have been the same.

I know PS3 emulation is incredibly unlikely however, but even just as a speculative to sell a PS4 on, it definitely has its merit to entice owners to upgrade.

I wish they had included Masters of Teras Kasi or something as well so we could get a hint that ps1 games would also be emulatable.

No, 4x pixels = 4x resolution.

Not that it really matters. But that wouldn't make sense. It's twice as much detail, or resolution, in each dimension. 2 x 2 = 4.

What the hell... LoL
I read it like, 3 or 4 times, checking if I misunderstood something! Then I read the comments!

So that's finally happening?

Why is my dumb self getting so excited about playing PS2 games over PS3 games, haha. I guess PSX is when Sony will announce some PS2 titles coming to PS4 then, right?

I am hoping for disc support (that would be awesome!) but I am afraid we won't have it, no money for Sony to be made.
That's too bad, I really want to play some games I bought just before my ps3 fat died that are unlikely to get a digital release due to licensing limbo ... Like "Shadow Hearts Covenant" I think

Disc release or this will probably be useless. Only the biggest games will be released, and a LOT of my favourite PS2 titles are licensed and will never ever be released legit.

I'm excited because the PS2 libaray is rife with classics I still haven't played haha. Easy access to them on the console I have hooked up with the added benefit of remote play would be amazing.

At a higher resolution with AA and 60fps there are some games I would revisit. Hope they continue to improve it to full 1080p though, and add some spiffy filtering too. Looking to see how it pans out.

Brave Fencer Musashi
Tobal 1&2
Lament of Innocence
Shadow of Rome
Tekken 4
Mark of Kri
Burnout 2/3/Revenge
Klonoa
Shadow Hearts
Valkryie Profile 2

.......are games I would play again.

lol OK?
Horizon is the only game you listed that interests me.

I have a library of PS3 games so I would be able to ditch the PS3 then.

When was this announced? This came so unexpectedly.

I can't wait to play all my favorite PS2 games again :)

TimeSplitters, SotC, and KH here we go again!

I'd prefer PS3 émulation but it's still good I guess.

Either you don't understand non x86 emulation or are being a troll. I have to overclock my processor to 4.4 ghz just to emulate a Wii game (The Last Story) at 30 fps right now. PS3 emulation is all but impossible on an x86 architecture.

Do you have anything to back this up? The PSNow app is now delivered on all Sony devices that are internet capable, and they've also got it on Samsung TVs.

Love statements like that! As far as i know PSNOW is not discontinued and disc support is impossible, since you are streaming games from a PS3 data farm!

With that said PSX will be glorious, all the game announcements + PS1/PS2 BC>E3 2015!

by disc support they mean, popping in the disc gives you unlimited access to stream it, which just isn't practical
