Digital Foundry: Hands-on with PS4's PlayStation 2 emulation

CD license fee for what? The patents expired over a decade ago and Sony owned half of them in the first place. And afaik PS1 games aren't technically Redbook Audio CDs even if they have CD audio tracks, so they probably wouldn't even need to pay for the CD logo.

I see, makes sense. Just assumed there was a licensing fee involved seeing as PS4 has no CD playback option, and they make you go out of your way to enable DVD playback for what I assume is that very reason.

Question-- How did apparently no one notice this in the past 2 days since release? Even a single GAF member running into the emulation prompts would have raised alarms all over the place.

A bunch of people (myself included) concluded that they would be emulated as soon as they were announced.

Meh... I had PS2 BC on my 60gig PS3 and never used it. For me the generation gap was just too big. I could see the appeal of PS3 games since the support for the platform is just now dying off, but I don't see the masses caring much about the potential of PS2 support.

well in a nutshell this is a PERFECT example why i set aside my PS4 in favor of a Xbone. As great a set of hardware it is, Sony as a company is still the same idiotic narrow minded choices the company its been doing for years. BC for PS3 games on PS4? spend $20 a month. Honestly i'd even give them a pass on that since emulating the CELL would be hard but here they prove they have a fully functional PS2 emulator up and running on PS4.... do they let people run games off their CDs like Microsoft? something you could do with their previous consoles (at least for a time)? nope. hope you feel like buying them again on PSN.....

honestly disgusts me

(and no BC isnt the end all be all of why i through the majoring of my console money behind MS but its just another example of Sony being their typical Arrogant selves.... and MS, if not exactly altruistic, at least hungry to say on Gamers good side and not exploit "revenue streams" at every turn"

Not sure if serious.

Probably not, considering not even the Xbox 360 can play Xbox 360 games from CDs.

I think its more due to the fact of implementing Trophies. It would have to be done on a game by game basis.
I think Sony want to breathe new life into the games rather than leave them how they were.
All that requires time and QA, which needs money to do so.
Would you do work for free for (possibly) years?

hopefully you're right and i'm just overreacting. I still have a shelf full of PS1/PS2 and PS3 games i'd love to revisit but i just dont believe Sony will do it without finding a way to charge for it

PS1 from CD's isn't happening. PS3 games being backwards compatible definitely isn't happening.

I care more about ps2 BC I still have ps3 and all games are readily available. I don't have a ps2 and trying to find games is much harder.

That footage looked great compared to the PS2 originals. If this is how PS2 classics will be brought to the PS4 then it is worth the wait. I really hope they expand this, it's gotta happen.

THIS.....

I'll remember when Sony announced that PS4 would support used games. They still have consumer values.

"There is a lot of PS2 games around the world, let them revisit something they already bought as a token of our appreciation."

It doesn't need to be paid. Xbox 360 BC is free.

PS2 had some of the greatest games of any generation for me, so the possibility of getting some of those brilliant games with improved performance is pretty damn cool.

Jesus Christ.

It hasn't even been officially announced and already your shitting bricks.

When people are making assumptions about what will/won't be supported/possible, it's probably a good idea to explain your reasoning. Making declarative statements without qualification is confusing people.

The reason we have so few details is that Sony is likely waiting until PSX to start talking about this stuff properly. They likely granted EA permission to include download codes for these games with the Battlefield PS4 bundle as part of their marketing deal, but aren't looking to draw more attention to them until more details are officially unveiled.

No one knows what the selection of games will be beyond these three titles (although Dark Cloud 2, Twisted Metal: Black & Ape Escape 2 were recently classified by PEGI for PS4, so they are likely).
No one knows whether discs will be supported or not.
No one knows whether previously purchased digital copies of PS1/PS2 games will carry over to the PS4.

Personally, I am about 50/50 on whether discs will be supported, and I can see compelling arguments for either case. I think digital games will probably carry over, but the question mark over achievements is my only doubt.

Titles I'd love to revisit on PS4 are God Hand, Gradius 5, Black, Urban Chaos: Riot Response, Katamari Damacy, Burnout 3, Rez, Gitaroo Man, Timesplitters 2, Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction, Spider-Man 2, Scarface, Mercenaries & Second Sight.

PS Now isn't a BC solution, we don't know if the proper emulation suite will support disc based games, this is all based off 3 games that came exclusively bundled with a PS4 system that hasn't even been talked about properly by Sony.

Talk about jumping to conclusions.

Speaking of MS "not exploiting revenue streams", how about paying for online before it was cool?

At the end of the day, both companies are going to exploit the consumer to maximize profit.

Very arbitrary to discuss the degree at which it is done and who did it first.

You ever get the feeling that some Sony exec is lurking this thread and laughing his ass off at the naysayers while he playfully squeezes an xbone stress ball?

Holy shit, what?? Is this finally happening??

Does anyone know if we'll be able to play games from our PS2 discs, or is it going to be PSN downloads that require us to repurchase them?

i'll happily eat crow later if it turns out that i over-reacted and good guy Sony comes along with PS1 / PS2 BC that can be run both online and via CDs (as keys) but considering they had PS2 emulator for the PS3 that was by many accounts pretty damn good and never did anything with it i'm not holiding my breath.

If they can somehow bring the Matrix: Path of Neo back with trophies, my (gaming) life would be complete.

Who am I kidding, it's not popular enough to be emulated. :(

This is definitely cool. It just doesn't matter much to me until I get confirmation of disc support. I have many PS2 games that never got the classics treatment. So if it's digital only it still isn't much of a boon for me.

It's like you were typing up the super-outrage post for when the system they will implement is revealed, but then you actually posted it by accident.
