Digital Foundry: Hands-on with PS4's PlayStation 2 emulation

Still waiting for them to use their patent on adding trophies to old games, I think it would really infuse some enthusiasm for buying old games again for the system.

As much as I would like to see the Ace Combat games make it across, wouldn't they probably be a licensing nightmare? I mean, we couldn't even get After Burner Climax to hang around long.

I believe Bandai Namco would have less licensing issues considering Ace Combat Infinity is still going and the older AC games are still on sale digitally.

So...did Eurogamer jump the gun a bit here? We've known these Star Wars games were coming for awhile. Showing they're most likely running using emulation isn't quite the same as "releasing PS2 emulation with no fanfare whatsoever," is it? It's not exactly the "PS1 and PS2 classics coming to the PS4!" announcement we're all waiting for.

Edit: Nope! Seems EG was on point. http://www.wired.com/2015/11/playstation-2-emulation-coming-to-ps4-sony-confirms/

New thread for those who have missed it. Sony confirms.

I can't help but laugh at Kaz's face on Denzel :p

Here's the timeline of events

- In 2013 Sony patents a new method of adding trophies to games that previously didn't have them.

- Early last year Digital Foundry posts an article about how they've learned that Sony has managed to emulate PSone and PS2 games on the PS4 which will allow for upgraded visuals rather than the "smoothing" effect that we've seen on previous BC PS platforms.

- In the middle of this year PEGI (European rating board) posts ratings for Dark Cloud 2, Twisted Metal Black, and Ape Escape 2 for the PS4.

- Tuesday Sony releases several PS2 generation Star Wars games that have been clearly emulated and connect to the first two points (trophies and improved visuals).

The PSX announcement is just speculation. There's no real indication that it will happen there, but people expect it because that's a big fan event and this is obviously a fan requested feature.

PSX Believe!

"told wired via email " errrrrr, I'll wait for a more reliable source.

This has nothing to do the xbone BC this has likely been in the plans for quite a while.

There's no point in stating matter-of-factly that is has nothing to do with Xbox BC, when you're obviously not sure how long this has been a serious consideration. Even if it was being looked into previously, that doesn't mean that the choice to fully pursue it isn't in response to the Xbox BC.

You are a fool if you think that Sony could make a fully working ps2 emulator with added features like trophy support in a couple months. And the plans were leaked like a year ago http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2014-ps1-ps2-games-heading-to-ps4

Well, they've had at least a few people working on it for at least 3 years now. It's possible they've put more resources on it recently though.

Will the games be made to look as good on hdtvs as they did on ps2 and crt ?

Ps2 on HD tvs looks awful and I refuse to play them. Literally look 3 times worse

I didn't say that... hell, the emulator could be an iteration on the existing emu they had for PS3 for all we know. I'm saying that even if they were working on it, doesn't mean we'd be getting it right now. These companies work on all sorts of shit that doesn't see the light of day. It could have been "working" for ages now. You're saying it has "nothing" to do with Xbox BC, as though everything would happen exactly as it is no even if MS had announced nothing on that front... but unless you're working there I don't think that's a safe claim to make.

First thing I thought of when skimming the article is that with all the image adjustment and pay processing there's likely frames of input lag added. That means this is less useful for fighters. :(

It seems to be rendering the Star Wars games 2x as fast as on the PS2 so I don't think that will be a problem.

Given you can pretty much play your whole physical with whatever controller you want and at whatever settings your rig can handle? Yes.
Wouldn't this be more stable, considering they have all the design documents to make the emulator?

Also, for someone out of touch with PCs these days, what's the bare minimum pc you need to emulate at the same level as this emulator? Just curious.

Awesome news. I wonder what graphics options will be available. Here's hoping for an aspect ratio setting, since I'm not sure the monitor I use have those built in...

Also, forget about disc support. The entire incentive on Sony's – and the publishers' – part to develop the system and adding trophy support is to be able to re-sell those games as PS2 Classics. The added features make it a perfectly reasonable deal, even.

All my PS2 games are Japanese or US so even if we did get disc emulation, I bet region coding would still apply with my UK PS4. If they're on the store, maybe buying from the Japanese store would be possible. Would be good for cases where PAL60 support didn't exist (or the game didn't come out!).

also this (related to PSone games) – http://blog.us.playstation.com/2014/10/06/vib-ribbon-finally-releases-in-north-america-tomorrow/

...
our engineers have developed a way to bring Vibri to life on PS3 and PS Vita (we’re still working on a way to make it available on PS4)

But now Sony has the PS NOW stuff, will they add BC anyway? Or is PSNow just for PS3 titles?

PS Now is meant for PS3 games mostly for now and in future it will have PS1/PS2 etc., Also PS Now is not Playstation only service and its for every smart device thats capable with internet.

I dont think we'll see something like X1's level of backwards compatibility. If I were Sony:

- Certain PS3 games are/will be 'remade/remastered/choose your poison'. They will still be in demand because of fans and because a lot of people will not have played them. I'm afraid that 'that certain PS3 game you love' wont be a part of this process, but people will pay for it.
- PS2 (and PS1) games will become available as digital downloads, or as PS+ gifts, or as extras. I'm afraid that 'that certain PS1 and PS2 game you love' wont be a part of this proces, but people will pay for it. It would be nice if Sony does not make you rebuy shit if you already got certain games as digital classics.
- PS Now is an avenue for Sony to get subscribers on non-gaming platforms (Smart TVs etc). It will have tons of games you already have or just arent interested in, but people will pay for it.
- The few die hards who want to play their old stuff probably have their old consoles around.
The way I see it, PS4 will cover PS1/PS2 emulation with a target of 1080p, whilst PS3 games will be accessible via PS NOW or through remasters. The PS5 will most probably bring PS3 emulation to the table along with PS1/PS2.
