Fallout 4 - Reviews thread

Okay I'm an hour or two in the game on PS4, just finished minutemen sequence.

I don't like this game, in fact it is verging on being rather terrible. The graphics are rubbish, the framerate is a complete mess, the animations are sloppy, the gun shooting is blocky, and the overall presentation is lackluster. It's a last gen game and I don't know how else to describe it. I also find the world uninteresting and painful to navigate around.

Worst of all is the glitches. People just walk into stuff all the time. I randomly teleported to a random place at one point! The AI is horrible, sneaking is shallow, and the gameplay is slow and boring. How this game is meta 80+ I have no idea. I must be missing something that everyone else sees. Witcher 3 and MGSV blows this game away in every regard.

I'm going to trade it in for Just Cause on the 1st. 4/10 from me.

4/10 after an hour, nice one.

The intro to the game is rushed, boring and odd. I don't know how you managed to run in to so many issues in an hour though. Sneaking is shallow? How much sneaking can you do in an hour, you must have placed all of two perk points at the most.

I Fallout 6 could address these issues.

Haha, what? Unless you're talking about the next Obsidian Fallout

In 7 years all they really accomplished was surgically remove 99% of the rpg elements from the series, stealing basic shit that modders did years ago (sprint, power armor charge) and implemented a dialogue system more dumbed down than mass effect's.

Play the game more and stfu. Fucking lol at giving reviews after an hour of playing.

Do I need to play Big Rigs for more than an hour to decide a rating? You can tell if a game is going to be good or not rather quickly. You either feel it or you don't. Your logic is flawed.

I've bought the game with my own money, gave it a try, don't like almost anything about it and I doubt that will change spending another hour on it. I mean, come on, the animations are obnoxious. A question giver was staring at me while walking into a lamp post. Made me laugh and took the very small amount of immersion I had away. Am I the only one that sees this here?

I just don't understand how anyone can give this game higher than a 6. Framerate really made it an unplayable mess for me. Visuals were fuck ugly and loading times happened everytime I entered a building, they were each very long. How are reviewers and gamers allowing something like this to succeed?

Love angry joe reviews, he goes so much more in-depth than most reviewers and is very entertaining as well.

The dialogue he showed in that older fallout game was awesome, I'd love to play a game that was focused more on dialogue trees impacting the story like that rather than the shooting focused elements of fallout 4. But I guess it would have less mainstream appeal and wouldn't make sense monetarily.

How do people invest like 10 hours on a game and then say "this game sucks"? I mean, I barely have time for videogames, if I hate a game I surely don't play it for more than, like, 30 minutes.

This always blows my mind in Bethesda threads.

Fallout 4 is exactly the same from hour 1 to the end (you see power armor, deathclaw and basebuilding in the first 30 min). It's primarily a shooter and you continue to shoot things but with more HP bloat! What more would he expect?

Not everyone experienced that game as you did obviously.

Because it's still a great game?

The frame rate isn't "unplayable" to me at all. Some textures and geometry detail could be better but nothing that detracts from my experience. Everything else about the game for me (great companions, insanely detailed world, fun exploration, vastly improved combat and some really memorable quests) far overshadows the shortcomings.

There. Now can you understand how others can give it higher than a 6?

The hype for this game is unreal. I think hype changed the grading curve.

To be fair, there are times when the frame rate drops so bad that you are literally in super slow motion, and can't react to anything. It's rare, but it happens, and it shouldn't, and it would definitely be accurate to say "unplayable" during those instances.

Have to agree. I've just finished the minutemen part and I've played enough to know I won't like this (few hours). The animations are immersion breaking and the presentation is one of the weakest of the entire generation.

I mean, the frame rate when you are all running to the vault was a bloody shambles. It made me cringe.

I gave it a 4/10 on the previous page. My opinion.

What?

The main appeal of these games is exploration. Try to go to the bottom of the map in hour 1 with a shitty pipe pistol and take on the stuff you see down there. My character has gone through a dramatic improvement through the crafting and perks to become a sniper VATS god.

I've experienced significant slowdowns in some instances, but nothing to where I wasn't able to react. I was taking his post to mean that 'overall' the game is unplayable.

When I was watching Greg Miller do a lets play just before the game launched, he entered a room where all of a sudden the frames dropped so bad that he had to reload his last save. Not sure how frequently this actually happens, and yeah, certainly not throughout the whole game, but that's pretty bad. It happened to me on occasion when playing Bloodborne too. Not sure if From ever fixed that.

On the PS4, having played 37 hours so far, and it's never even gotten close to that bad. I once had a drop below 10 fps that lasted maybe 2 seconds but that was outside of combat in some interior space.

maybe because others haven't had those same experiences.................???

I haven't had ANY of those issues your having.

Hell, on my PC, the loading screen load too fast to the point where I can't even finished reading the entire loading captions before its done loading.

Load times are the only problem that I agree with. Framerate seemed fine for me. Only a couple times did it dip really low and I recently beat the game @ level 48. The gameplay is really fun and there are plenty of mini stories with all the locations to give me more than my money's worth.

AMAZING review. Thorough, well reasoned and so. goddamn. funny. I laughed my ass off on that character model and the glitch parts. One of the best reviews Joe ever did.

then dont play on Survival

That solves only one issue - bulletspongey enemies, and only somewhat. All the other issues are still there though.

The Witcher games take themselves so damn seriously.

I like Fallout for its sense of humor.

You sound like you never actually played Witcher games, three in particular. There is more humour in single quest of TW3 there there is in the entirety of my 40 hours played in FO4.

There are flaws with the game, sure, but look at the scale.

I didn't care for the first 2 hours, but after the intro nonsense and few intro quests are done, the game really opened up and I couldn't put it down.

I can appreciate if there are things that you can't tolerate (I can't play this on console because of the FOV, PC is fine though, for example), but I don't think that's representative of the entire game, of course. To be fair, in an hour you have seen like 2% of the scope of the game at best.

Wha...come on now lol.

Witcher 3 has plenty of humor, but so does Fallout 4.

If it has, I haven't seen it yet. I hope you are right. The only somewhat slightly amusing character I met so far has been Strong.

I very much doubt anything in F4 will be more enjoyable than drunk night at Kaer Morhen or the wedding in Hearts of Stone though.

Well humor is super subjective so I won't say which is more enjoyable, but the game attempts it plenty from what I've seen.

I know it's off topic, but that wedding quest was incredible.

How are reviewers and gamers allowing something like this to succeed?

Because we are not the Borg, and you as a single human being are not dictating what other people should think is entertaining or not.

You don't have to like the consensus, but you should respect it.

PC @ 60fps I'd imagine.

I'm barely scrapping by on the lowest settings with my laptop and I'm still having a great time. Most people don't care about how well the game performs as long as it's playable, and the ones who do care already have a good PC.

The game plays pretty great and looks nice (IMO) playing on my laptop. I get 1080p/60 mostly on ultra/high mix and low god rays. A couple areas where it chugs a bit but overall it's not bad.

Man, I really gotta get around to Hearts of Stone. Heard nothing but good stuff.

Well you probably see all big rigs has to offer in the first hour. Not the case here. The starting area in Fallout 4 is the weakest part of the game and it gets immensely better the closer you get to diamond city. The little quirks will always be there though, so whatever.

RPGs take more time to really decide if you like them cause the first thing that needs to happen is you need to get used to the mechanic. Add in some have intros where you don't get a chance to even get used to the mechanics yet so it's hard to tell just from the intro.

I would say with an RPG it isn't time that you should say but how far you got into the game. I'd give it at least past the intro and a littel into when it finally just gives the game over to you to play (play an hour into that) before you make up your mind.

Then again, I can understand if you have many other games and this was just a passing thing anyways and you weren't that interested enough to invest that. But expect that if you haven't gotten too much into an RPG people are going to say you didn't spend enough time to say it was a horrible game. You really can't give it a good judgement just from the intro.

It's one thing to say I just didn't have the time to invest in it to find out and it just wasn't grabbing me right away. It's another to call it a bad game when you didn't give it a fair shot.

This is accurate for me as well after 30 hours tromping through the wasteland.

Visuals were fuck ugly and loading times happened everytime I entered a building, they were each very long. How are reviewers and gamers allowing something like this to succeed?

Framerate only got bad enough for me to notice 30-40 hours into the game for me. But honestly, for me framerate isn't a dealkiller until it makes the game run like a literal sideshow (and I'm not talking about the hyperbole people say when they say 20 fps = slide show. I mean 1 frame per 2 seconds or worse which usually restarting fixes that. I've never seen a Bethesda game get that slow that it wasn't some sort of weird way of crashing or something that a restart didn't fix. And happily Fallout 4 hasn't done that to me, something I can't say about the previous Fallouts. It's actually why Vegas got unplayable to me cause it would start doing that every 2 minutes. At some point it just wasn't worth trying to fight the game so I could play it). So for me framerate isn't something that is going to make me ding a game much unless it's really bad. It just isn't something that will ruin a game for me. I know people who are sensitive to it are frustrated by people like me but sorry, I'm going to play and enjoy the game and I'm not going to not enjoy it just cause some one else doesn't like something that doesn't affect me. And it's not going to affect my personal rating of it (though I might mention it if I notice it so people who don't like it know that it has that problem).

I love the visuals so speak for yourself :P.

And loading times are pretty quick. Certainly a lot lot quicker than Witcher 3 loading times (Which I'd get out my tablet and read the internet while it happened. Fallout 4's times are so quick it's pointless cause I barely even get to read one post or respond before it's ready). Granted, since you load a lot more with Fallout I don't think I would be so ok with it if it took as long as Witcher did to load (but it did suck in Witcher when I would find a boss that I was dieing to a lot). So I'm not sure why you think loading times are so bad (more impatient than me?). And I'm on console so it's not that my PC is super fast.

I have just bought fallout 4 and after reading some of the posts I am starting to regret buying it. Will find out tomorrow when it arrives in the post.

Because it's a fantastic game.
