Sony confirms PS2 emulation coming to PS4

That would be amazing, but they didn't add disc support to the late model PS3s once they got the emulation down. You want San Andreas, you re-buy San Andreas digitally.

I'm not holding my breath for disc.

Can't wait until I can d/l the digital copy of Katamari Demacy I already own to my PS4 and play it in the best (official) quality yet, though. I'm almost positive that's going to happen.

That's because the PS3s BC was on a title-by-title basis, which leads me to believe they didn't emulate the PS2 per se. For example, and someone please correct me if I have this wrong, but I recall the Graphics Synthesizer (GS) having more bandwidth than RSX. So it's my suspicion that the titles made available as PS2 Classics were those that perhaps didn't make use of the full bandwidth available to the GS.

Be nice if anyone who knows more can fill in the detail here.

Besides, if PS2 BC had have been a trivial thing for PS3 then surely we'd have seen shit-loads of titles available. But there was hardly any. Given the PS2s vast and diverse library, there must have been a bloody good reason for someone to forgo all that low-effort easy-revenue. I mean, it was literally money for old rope.

Nope, It's a full-featured PS2 emulator. It was hacked, so people with custom firmwares were able to inject other titles into it, stuff that was never released in the storefront.

Here's our thread from back then.

They left a TON of money on the table. Talk to somebody with a hacked PS3. The emulator is crazy good. But there's only about 100 games that legally use it.

The selection of PS2 Classics on PS3 wasn't very impressive. Hope more publishers get on board this time.

Sucks we'll never get disc support.

Best news is once my fat PS3 dies, I can just replace it with a cooler running slim for PS3 games. No more paying to get that fucker fixed.

I think with the way things are now, it might actually be worth persisting and asking them for that. Constantly.

Great news.

I have a few boxes full of PS2 games just sitting in my closet. Would be nice to bust them out to use on PS4.

EDIT: Wait this won't let me use discs?

The Star Wars games can't. Something about 'not in the same region' despite being in the same region.

Screenshots, streaming and remote play works thought. Not sure about supsend & resume.

i wonder if it's not working due to those games not being purchasable at this time.

does Super Star Wars work?

Around 300 actually, but every region gets a different selection.
Like with PS1 games (450) licensing issues are what primarily determines what goes on the store - not compatibility.

This is exciting.

Thankful to Microsoft for effectively prompting Sony to do this.

Except they didn't. From the patents we've seen, this has been planned for years.

Also, the 360 emulator was announced at E3 this year, right? Yeah, I doubt Sony managed to develop this emulator in a matter of months in reaction to Microsoft.

Again, you're not talking about BC. You are talking about PS2 Classics released digitally on PSN. BC means being able to use games media from the previous console or consoles in the newest one.

And all my PS2 discs work flawlessly in my launch window PS3.

Is it even really an emulator? From what I understood, those 360 games are getting re-compiled for Xbox One through a cross-platform kit developed specifically towards this end.

By the way, do ps2 games ever go on sale?

It's rare, but this year I bought both Contra games for a couple of bucks each and I remember Katamari being part of a $1 sale (I really should've gotten it, had I known PS4 emulation would increase the resolution...).

Why would they have planned it, I heard no one uses it.

I wouldn't be surprised if they allow disc based emulation no matter what game, but only give trophy support for PSN classics/PS4 special releases.

Sure. Also, how much you are trying to push licensing. Microsoft is trying a lot harder, maybe that will motivate Sony.

Either way, they could have made the late-model PS3s play PS2 discs, but chose not to. That's too bad. Again, maybe this is something where competition will push them to consider differently with PS4. But I'm not holding my breath.

It would be cool if games like Bully ended up getting a new definitive console version, given that the PS4 playing the PS2 game might look better than the 360 version...at least smoother.

Wrapped, not compiled. The X1 is running native 360 code via emulation.

I think the issue is a mix of licensing and compatibility. I remembering the developer of Wild Arms (or some other obscure PS2 JRPG) saying it wouldn't be released on PSN because they couldn't get the ISO to work with the emulator to their standards.

Hey it's totally possible that after MS announced BC in August, Sony started making the emulation software, got in touch with the necessary parties for the Star Wars games, had those devs put in all the trophies and whatnot, and got the bundles done all in 3 months.

Totally possible!

Thanks Microsoft!

Thats what I don't like about Sony, they use a safe strategy most of the time just waiting how the market behaves and if looks good then almost copy paste that, ie. psmove against wii, morpheus against oculus, backward comp. against the Xone back. comp. They innovate here and there too (sixaxis, DS4 touch, share btn) there's no need to follow tendencies.

you are wrong with bc, move and Morpheus but nice try

tell me why

Others have covered other bases, so if you truly care to educate yourself read about the Eyetoy. Sony not only was researching, but put out actual motion based games with the PS2. Move technology and research predates Wii.
