Fallout 4 PC Performance Thread

Strange... turned on FRAPS for the first time and the game seems to cap out at 72 FPS for me, which is exactly have of my monitor's refresh rate.

Anyone else experiencing this? Could this be the issue that people were reporting about the game locking at 30 FPS (half of a typical 60hz monitor)?

Set iPresentInterval=0 in the .ini files in your documents, and then enable vsync through your graphics driver control panel.

The performance for me is absolute dog poop in SLI.

With no SLI (one GPU), I'm getting around 30FPS @ 5K w/ all settings maxed out. Sometimes it dips to 20FPS which is horrendous.

With SLI tweak (inspector), GPU usage is ~ 50% across all four GPUs but the framerate is still the same! Really pathetic.

Anyhoo... the game is somewhat fun so far. Haven't really gotten into it much yet.

Okay, this is out now and I just tested it and it works really well. Was at Swan's pond and framerate was 45 before and 60 after. These are my settings for the mod

fTargetFramerate=60.0
fShadowDrawDistMin=3000.0
fShadowDrawDistMax=20000.0

Yep, this is the best mod so far.

I have this bug where the game will instantly crash to desktop when a cross into a very specific area by the Kendall Hospital. I hear this bug prevents you from completeing the game too.

If bethesda does actually patch this, will it still be fixed for my already corrupted save or will I still be required to start all the way over.

I definitely regret spending money on this buggy pos game.

Havent been paying too much attention but is it normal for this game to run like stuttering dog shit at points?

Havent played much, just hit Corvega and went in to clean out Raiders, and since I've been there every few minutes the game just bogs down and I get these intermittent pauses of a second or two then the frame rate comes back to normal. It's not as though the frame rate is dropping, its like a background load or something happening.

Thanks!

Got it running at 100+ FPS a lot of the time now. I think it might be messing with how the dialogue plays, though... Sometimes the next line of dialogue will start before the NPC finished the previous line.

Yeah, as has been said many, many times in this thread going over 60 fps is a no-no.

It was previously capping at 72 FPS for me, and I never encountered any issues. I might just knock it back down to that.

I initially locked to 75 (but Inspector always makes it 3 or 4 higher for me, so it was usually 78) and I never had any problems. I only decreased it to 60 just in case. Might put it back upfor that extra smoothness 60 can't give.

So wait, does SLI not work without a tweak in this game? Or has that since been patched. SLI on my 970s is enabled and the game is running so I figured it was working fine. Have not checked GPU usage or anything. Do I have to force it somehow?

How so? I've pumped over 50 hours into it on my PC and it's been great.

Even on high end systems people are seeing framerate drops from well over 60fps to something in the twenties from one area to the another. That's quite messy. Yeah, if you reduce shadow distance to medium you can sort that out, but then city scape image quality looks terrible in my opinion, really flat and lifeless with no shadows. Gonna try the shadow boost mod later.

The Fallout 4 launcher keeps resetting the game's framerate cap line in the ini file. Beware of making the file read only as you won't be able to change a lot of in game settings. The launcher mod resets things as well, so double check your graphics settings, difficulty, fps....,etc.

Highest I've seen is 70% usage across my two GPU cores (GTX690) and it gives me about a 10-20fps boost over non-SLI (though I would need to do more testing to be more accurate, but it does improve the framerate on my system). This is with the Arkham City SLI compatibility bits. The Max Payne 3 compatibility bits gave me a bigger boost in framerate but introduced some noticeable stuttering so I switched back but it's worth a try.

Nvidia hasn't released an SLI profile for it yet so it does need to be forced on currently.

Interesting. This kind of makes me happy, as I was accepting the performance of just the one GPU thinking I was indeed using both.

How do I force it? Looking forward to see what performance gains I receive.

Also, any word on official SLI support?

Game seems to be playing fine at 80 fps, had to cap it in Nvidia Inspector since 144 was breaking shit every time I used a terminal. Anyone go higher with any level of stability?

Select SLI_RENDERING_MODE_FORCE_AFR2 under SLI rendering mode in Nvidia Inspector.

My experience so far after 25 or so hours have been quite enjoyable.

1440p Ultra with godrays set to high @ 30Fps locked with rivatuner + vsync set to half refresh with inspector (ipresent interval=0 ). No drops under 30.

Sometimes every 2h or so i encounter some random stutter wich is barely noticable but strangely it has nothing to do with the frametime(the last placed i noticed it was looking at the front door of Diamond city) wich is a locked 33.33ms. Weird.

Having a blast!

i downloaded this (http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/102/?) and played about with that. there is a setting to adjust shadows. i had a cap of 40fps but was getting drops as low as 20fps in some areas even with medium shadow distance.

the default settings were 2048 for shadow resolution and 14000.00 for distance. medium is about 3000.00. what i did was lower the resolution to 720 and the distance to 5000.00

it doesn't look as bad now. there is still shadows rendering right in front of you but not as noticeable and there is of course a fps boost. i now have a lock of 50fps. i could play with a 60fps lock but just wanted to limit the severity of the drops.

i can finally go around diamond city and not be distracted by huge frame drops. the areas around goodneighbor are a lot smoother too.

Also, any word on official SLI support?

It Nvidia/Bethesda hasn't offered an update on that front by the end of the month, it'll be safe to assume official SLI support isn't on the cards. It's a pity SLI is treated as a red-headed stepchild these days as my previous GPU setup (two 2GB 670s) served me very well, whereas where things currently stand, if I want improved GPU performance in AssCreed Syndicate, Arkham Knight or perhaps some other recent(ish) release, my only option is to move up to a 980 Ti.

Edit: I see there's a workaround for Fallout 4, although it doesn't seem to be ideal.

123-134fps average...but the game doesn't look much better than skyrim vanilla which I runs much faster, hoping for 2k textures and stuff eventually.

Edit: not really performance related, but noteworthy, I am encounter FoV issues anything over 90 screws with the pipboy.

If I didn't get this on CDKeys I'd be getting a refund on Steam.

R9 290X
i5 4690k @ 4.5ghz
16gb RAM

Even with a lot of stuff on high/medium it drops to the 20s in the city areas.

Something is wrong here. Game shouldn't do that, AMD performance isn't good, but drops down to 20s... drivers etc are up to date I guess.

ALSO i5 4690k @ 5.5ghz what the hell. Are you cooling that thing with liquid nitrogen?

I know plenty who run it find on a 290x, however I do know the game is very hard on CPUs

Uber Fidelity is,the one you want.

The amount of sharpening on that is freakin disgusting. What the hell.

With SLI = My performance is fantastic. Also random crashes to desktop every 10 minutes or so...
No SLI = Performance is much worse.... but no crashes whatsoever.

The amount of crashes was getting frustrating for me. I had to disable it :(

I'm probably jinxing it by saying this but I've not had a single crash in the game with SLI enabled in 62 hours play time. Perhaps Windows is a contributing factor; I'm still on Win7.

I don't know if it's worth mentioning, as possibly another contributing factor, but the game always tries to switch to borderless windowed mode for me, regardless of the setting I choose, which puts the game window on the left side of the screen with the desktop still visible in the background on the right side (I have a 21:9 monitor), so I needed to edit the Fallout4Prefs.ini file and set the game to fullscreen manually and make the file read-only.

It's not that CPU intense as people make it out to be.

i7-5820k, downclocked to just 2.5ghz. With enabled/disabled cores or hyperthreading.

His massively overclocked i5 is more then good enough. IF it runs stable in the first place.

Even setting "bBorderless=0" and "bFull Screen=1", I see the desktop/windows on the right side in Windows 7. The settings persist after the game closes. Do you see a solid black screen? I'm using an nVidia card if it makes a difference.

Have you set the file to read-only? If you don't then the game will keep changing it.

The loading times are fucking ridiculous as long as you play in frame limited fullscreen.

Switch to Borderless Windowed mode or uncap your framerate to cut your loading times to less than 50%

I used to have loading times of around 60 seconds on my SSD, switching to Borderless Windowed reduced those to sub-20 seconds.

This game is so fickle across different systems! I have the framerate capped in Nvidia Inspector and I'm running fullscreen and my load times are short.

I don't get how borderless windowed and loading times can be connected. There must be another factor at play here.

4.5 it was a typo :)

A lot of times its 60fps but then in Corvega or by the police station where you meet the Brotherhood it tanks.

Drivers all up to date, god rays turned down, etc.

Andy PM'd me a little while ago and official SLI support is still being explored as per his comment here. There's hope yet!

You're in an 84 page PC performance thread.

To be fair, a lot of the problems are people getting above console performance on the PC, which in a PC Performance thread is annoying. But this is a decent release of a game expected to be chock full of bugs. It's not an unplayable mess by any means.

Is there anyway to give weapons and armor longer names? A mod perhaps? I haven't been able to find anything.

Also has Bethesda said anything about the Godrays working as intended? because there's really no difference between Ultra, High and Medium except for a huge FPS hit.
