Sony confirms PS2 emulation coming to PS4

Do you think publishers actively try to get Sony and Microsoft to not do backwards compatibility on new systems to keep them from being able to play licensed games that they no longer have the license to? Is that even a thing? Just wondering if there would be a reason for a non-disc emulation argument (aside from the money making from digital sales).

I'm just thinking of games like NBA Street, which would be amazing to play again.
 
Once people keep their expectations in check all will be fine.

Just don't go in expecting disc backwards compatibility to all PS2 Classics.


This is how I see NeoGAF reacting to the news.

PSX: We would like to confirm PS4 will be able to play PS2 classics.

if Sony enables disc-based emulation wouldn't it have to be similar to the Xbone route where you download the game from XBL and you need the disc in the system in order to play the game?

They didn't allow for this on PS3 even though there are a lot of PS2 classics for PS3 on PSN. So why would anyone expect them to make it work on PS4?

Why do people keep saying this when you could play ANY PS1 disc on the ps2 and ps3 (all versions)? The only reason Sony wouldn't allow you to use the PS2 discs you already own is because they want to make money from digital sales of PS2 games.

Only certain versions of the early PS3 were backwards compatible.

But still, your point is valid. Backwards compatibility has been around for a long time. Using the disc as a key to activate a digital download is a new idea that XBONE pioneered. And if there's one thing XBONE is known for it's for pioneering the ideas that the entire industry will follow.., right??!!

All PS3's could play PS1 discs.

That's not really true. They removed the hardware emu and yes, from various reports the software emu ran most games fine. But that's after the community tested it all. Sony may simply not have been sure how solid emu compatibility was and simply didn't want to test every game in order to offer it. If they marketed it, or even offered it, there would be a implied agreement for them to support it...and they may not have wanted to do that. Assuming it's purely to sell digital classics is unfair, especially given they allow PS1 and had PS2 hardware emu.

Repeating this doesn't make it true. A company may not be comfortable putting out a product that "adequately run most games" for a variety of reasons, including implied support of said functionality when people come across the games that don't run. While it's easy to say 'but people would be happy with what they got!' we know that's not actually true.

Your entire statement makes even less sense when you consider they allowed PS1 emu despite them selling those digitally too. Your bias is showing.

EDIT -- not to mention, not allowing you to play ps2 games on your ps4 barely registers as 'greed' even if they had a fully working emu. Anyone with a stack of ps2 disks can easily buy a ps2, and sony is under no obligation to provide and support emulation given that's not what we paid for with ps3s (or ps4s). It's not 'greed' if they decide to not give it to you, it's generosity if they do.

If Sony is confident that their PS2 emulator can adequately run most games, the only reason they won't allow you to use your discs is greed. They don't have to renew licenses or have games re-rated for games they aren't re-publishing.

The 360 solution would be better than nothing. Many original Xbox titles had problems and they only sold digital versions of titles without big problems, but you could at least try your discs and hope the emulation worked fine.

This is correct. Not even all PS1 games are compatible with the PS2. List of PlayStation games incompatible with PlayStation 2

Or go into this list for PS3 and look up the words "unplayable" and "bug"

Edit: holy shit! According to that first list, not even all PS2 games are 100% compatible with the slim PS2!!

I'm surprised people are just still finding out about this.

I put a PS1 disc in my PS3 the day i got it just to test it, and yeah, it works fine.

Then again, PS1 emulation is easy as cake. It runs on a broken toaster. No wonder Vita and PSP could run PS1 games too.

Sony's PS2 software emulation is probably too imperfect for them to just unlock all games from all DVD's to begin with, even if they wanted to. So classics will be their substitute. Remember that original PS3's had the emotion engine in them, so once they took that out, their emulation percentage went down drastically, and even that wasn't perfect

PS1 disc support i have no idea about. ISO wise, every console can run them, but we haven't heard anything about Sony's policy on discs since they created the PS3 hardware to support PS1 discs.

I don't expect it....but who knows

PS1/PS2 BC would be much different than XBONE BC with 360. The 360 is a previous gen system. PS2 and PS1 were 2 and 3 gens ago respectively and have both been emulated on x86 platforms for some time now. Apples and oranges.

Launch PS2 had the PS1 CPU in it. It used it as an I/O controller during PS2 mode, but when playing PS1 discs, it was used for hardware emulation. The PS1's GPU was software emulated.

The original SDK allowed the PS1 chip to also be used to offload other tasks. When Sony released the hardware revisions that removed the PS1 chip, PS1 was 100% software emulation. The result of this was the few games that had used the I/O controller in funky ways didn't work on the new PS2s.

i'm sort of agreeing with you. i mean on ps3 they had mostly-working software emulation in place http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=526722 but only whitelisted certain titles, which we now see as PS2 classics. however, it would have been equally feasible to allow players who owned the disc version of those PS2 classics to play those games on their PS3. but they didn't, which leads me to believe they won't allow disc-based emulation on PS4 even if it is technically feasible.
 
We won't know about disc based backwards compatibility until we get more details. But I think people are too eager to believe that PlayStation will follow Xbox's approach. You have to understand that the PS guys are smug-ass motherfuckers. They love to get a jab in.

Again, Playstation doesn't have to follow Xbox's approach, PS1 and PS2 emulation has been running on X86 for some time now.

What? I'm clearly talking about ps2 emu - even my last sentence clearly refers to the fact we still have ps1 emu. And way to avoid all my other points by incorrectly focusing on a minor tangent. I know damn well I can play ps1 games on my ps3, I used to do it all the time. Being able to confidently emu all ps1 games does not necessarily mean they can confidently emu all ps2 games. You're running around in circles here.

Sony's standards are probably based on percentages. The number of old games not fully compatible with the succeeding generation of hardware is a relative drop in the bucket really. Even the 60GB PS3 is probably only compatible with like 95% or maybe 99% of PS1 and PS2 games. I think the ones without the Emotion Engine were only compatible with about 60% of PS2 games or maybe 80. I imagine Sony's confidence in the PS3's pure software PS2 emulation was lower than that.

My unlikely hope is that if Sony can get the PS4's PS2 software emu to at least run MOST PS2 games, they'll feel confident enough in that to allow discs while still selling classics on PSN.
 
Blu-ray & Netflix is cool but I have a problem, what am I going to do with my VHS collection?

If I can't watch my Barney VHS in HD on my Blu-ray player Netflix & PSN movies is useless to me.

I expect classics from PS3 to carry over but no disc-emulation. Anything less would be an actual disappointment and a rip-off. There is absolutely no reason for our purchases from PS3 not to carry over and it would be absolutely unacceptable otherwise.

Blu-Ray players can still run DVDs. This comparison might work for people wondering why they can't play physical N64 games on their Wii even though it has Virtual Console emulation.

The reason people are at least hoping for disc compatibility here is because not only is it technically feasible, Sony has set a precedent for it in the past.

As far as I know, the PS4's blu-ray drive can also read DVD-Roms...

Totally agree.

The most important thing to me is that internal upres rerendering in HD (similar to PCSX2) and if it's like the images earlier in the thread for the Star Wars games that'll be great and the thing making it most worth revisiting the games on my PS4.

Like others have said, especially those PS2 JRPGs.

I mean, it is pointless otherwise. If the only option is repurchasing games I already bought, I'm out of luck because the majority are never going to show up on PSN because the publishers either don't care, don't exist, or the license is tangled up. I imagine a lot of people are in similar situations.
