I think it's in reference to MS slowing the widening of the gap between PS4 and XB1 sales. If the rate the gap is slowing were to continue, the XB1 would eventually start to pass the PS4 in 9 years.

Kind of a silly point.

I wonder what bizarre angle they'll take when the Xbone stops slowing the widening of the gap between the two, evidenced clearly by November and December's sales.

Yep. XB1 might hit 20 mil by the end of the year depending on what it pulls in Nov/Dec but it's in the 15-16 mil category right now.

A rare 2:1 moment right now.

IIRC, the trend has been pretty consistently 2:1 since launch. In fact it's surprising to me that it has maintained this gap for two years now. I guess it could be the way of things for the remainder of the gen.

No, I'll tell you what is though. Scrapping sales figures in replacement for "active membership subscription users". Alas Xbox One.

The switch from ship to sell-through is happening literally at the same time as NPD has stopped tracking individual SKU sales in favor of charts that lump all platform sales for individual titles together.

In both of these cases, the shift makes it more difficult to detect what actually amounts to a declining trend in sales that's being masked by a higher concentration of/more front-loaded sales at one end of the market.

Joke?

Its a pretty consistent ratio, has been like this since right after launch, MS strategy of releasing number sold to retailers (not even that anymore) might have confused you.

What?!

You get shipped figures each quarter from Sony's financial results.

This press release is just to tout some sell through numbers going into Black Friday.

This is about console sales and not games, and they do provide shipped in their quarterly figures.

30 million consoles, yet no one bought Tearaway lol.

Well, if Sony actually shipped some copies to stores, maybe it would have sold a bit more.
Where I live, I couldn't find a single Tearaway disc: even in some big chains such as Mediamarkt there were Brother, Helldivers, Dynasty Warriors, J-Star Victory discs available, but Tearaway was nowhere to be found. ;_;

I have 7 PS4s, up from 4 at the end of last year. I use them as Art Deco pieces in my solariums. My horse, Prickly Pete, has one in his stable because he enjoys the menu music. When I took him to Aspen to hit the slopes, I forgot to buy a ps4 so I had to have another one delivered to me by room service. I kept that one so now I have 7. One in my bedroom, one in the living room, one in each of my four solariums, and one with Prickley Pete.

I used to play Wii u music for my horse, Holy Wang, but he started talking and wearing clothes.

Sure, but you don't typically get milestone updates from Sony on ship numbers (just sell-through), nor do you get ship numbers by region (unless they're hidden somewhere that I'm not seeing). So we have a much more limited view into how PS4 is performing compared to PS2 (in specific markets), since the metrics we're getting aren't as detailed.

There's been a lot of change in reporting on all fronts (hardware and software sales), from all parties that report industry metrics (Sony, Microsoft, NPD, and even Nintendo), that has made it difficult to discern long-term trends. One can't help but think this might be deliberate, since the PR is always "we're doing unprecedentedly well" when a closer look at the numbers suggests there's a trend toward decline.

Note again that I'm not saying PS4 is any less impressive in the current market environment, just that so far we've only had apples to oranges comparisons to the PS2 generation, which (like the Wii/DS for Nintendo) is the real benchmark for a successful Sony (not PS3).

Impressive, although I'm not getting one until the SE RPGs start coming out.

The industry has changed so much, so I can't blame the PS4 for Japan's shift toward mobile, but I always sought for a successor to the PS2 in both Japanese support and dominance, but those days are over.

Well, just bought mine because of an early BF deal. No idea which games I should get though, since I already have a PC to take care of multiplats.

At least I can watch netflix on it. God damn you Atlus for that P5 delay.

Helldivers
Bloodborne
Tearaway Unfolded
Driveclub
Infamous
Galak-z
Resogun
Final Fantasy X HD
Disgaea 5
DQ Heroes

Such like that is a good starting point

It's an Incredible impressive result, after Wii U's first year performance I didn't see it coming but I'm glad that Sony found so much support, first from consumers and later on also publishers. It's good for the future outlook of every console manufacturer I believe.

Very cool that it's tracking above the PS2. Glad to see such a big payoff for striking the right chords with fans and keeping the momentum up. And all of that before they've released any of their big IPs.

I'll be contributing to that number when Uncharted 4 releases.

Bro? You do realize "sold through" means PS4's sold to consumers, right?

What ?
Sold through numbers are much better than ship when it comes to telling how good a console doing and trends .

It's a nice way of showing consumer excitement for your product and tells you more about what people are actually buying than shipments. You're definitely right about that. It's not like I'm saying that it's not a much more "down to earth" way of reporting sales.

But when it's not a traditional metric (and when the reporting of traditional metrics has been watered down), there's no good way (for us laymen who don't have all the internal estimates) to use it to make comparisons (which are necessary for identifying long-term trends).

I think Japan can turn around if a few developers can get their games out.

Nothing like it used to be but right now it's like DOA

I feel like if Sony would subsidize localization(In exchange for exclusivity) of a number of Japanese developed games, they could completely revitalize that area of the industry. More sales and less risk.

These sales, in my opinion, confirm that PS4 will sell at least 100 million LTD. Sony have so much room on price and some killer games are coming next year. PSVR will have a solid user base and, providing it is priced appropriately, might dominate that space. And that space is where Microsoft are about 5 years behind so the PS5 will be in a super strong position too with native VR capabilities.

Xbox One we will never know.

I really have no idea what you are saying or trying to say .
Seeing sold through gives you a idea about long term trends cause you see the pace it selling at .
Plus you get ship numbers from Sony and estimates .
Are you really trying to say ship numbers are better than sold through ?

But, last November, they were "nearly" 10 million shipped. So do you think they shipped and sold nearly another 10 million in the past year?

15-16 million I believe is more likely than 20 million.
