PlayStation 4 sales (sold-through) hit 30.2 million worldwide

Hope this giant user base will help Sony boost VR and invest in more unique, risky projects.

They only need a better, more aggressive marketing campaign in Japan to renew interest on consoles. I don't think mobile is entirely at fault here.

The reason why the PS4 struggled in Japan during 2014 was because there was not a consistent flow of games Japanese gamers liked. 2015 has been a much better story.

Weren't there some people saying PS4 wouldn't sell 50m in it's life time?

Not sure why anyone would have realistically made that claim. PS3 sold 80+ million and the PS4 was obviously more popular and was taking some of 360's 80+ million Buyers into the next gen away from Microsoft.

It was my claim that the XBO might end up at 50 million lifetime if Sony steals 30 million of their buyers from last gen.

I'm really happy that this gen is going to break that bullshit "THE MOST POWERFUL CONSOLE NEVER WINS DERP" argument, as if the weakest console being WEAK is the reason why it won previous gens.

I only really heard this as a half-truth in the lead up to this current gen in news coverage to- I dunno, make a predicted market leader seem more uncertain? But yeah I always figured ease of development and price point are the two magic elements to a front-runner. PS4 just happened to bring performance along for the ride.

This should be updated with: "The battle for number 2 has already been decided. But who gives a shit."

We all know the Wii U isn't going anywhere.

I'm not disputing that it's a major win for Sony or that they're moving product and dollars very effectively. I'm just really curious how the long-term comparison stacks up when you start comparing the consoles on terms that aren't stacked in favor of PS4. (PS4 launched to more countries faster, so of course the WW numbers will be higher sooner. What happens if you compare individual territories based on launch timing for those territories? Is the focus on sell-through distracting from the idea that shipments on a regional, not-WW basis might not be unprecedentedly strong?)

I don't think PS4 is necessarily "more popular" than PS2 (unlike many people here); I just think Sony's orchestrated its launch in a much more strategic way.

It's still absolutely dominating this gen and Sony deserves massive kudos for correcting everything that was wrong with PS3.

Just bought one myself a couple weeks ago, pretty pleased so far between Uncharted Collection, Bloodborne, Journey, and Tearaway Unfolded.

I take it you're a Nintendo fan? I highly recommend Tearway if you miss the golden age of 3D platformers.

Lol well I do like a good deal of their games, tho it's funny to be asked that b/c I remember you from another thread and we got into a tussle over Sega, so let's just say I'm a pretty big fan of both xD. The only reason I'm waiting is to see what happens w/ PSVR and some other games like Dreams to come through, but I hear Tearaway's fantastic.

As to the other part, that is a good point to bring up. When you look at Japan for example there's no doubt PS4's much weaker there than PS2 or even PS3, but that's more to do w/ Japan than the PS4. Sony foresaw stuff like that and it's why they went with the global release, and indeed it was very smart of them to do so. But in the grand scheme of things I wouldn't use it against them or the PS4's accomplishment in this instance. No matter how you look at it the number is still mighty impressive.

This part is really important. The PS4 will be the most successful console by revenue and profit that Sony has ever built. Yes, more than the PS2
Yep. Easily. And it's also why MS isn't too worried about XBO sales; Live and app subscription services (let alone attach rate) are still making that more profitable for them than 360 was at this point in its lifecycle, too.

If memory serves, there was indeed a lot of discussion of that ilk at the tail end of NPD threads early-ish into the gen. Stuff about how the PS4's momentum would completely stall and have a sudden drop-off of sales once the early adopters and hardcore crowd laid down their cash. But the way things are going right now, I'd be very surprised if the PS4 didn't eventually sell over 100 million units. It won't outsell the PS2, but it'll beat the PS1.

Awesome, congrats sony! They really deserve it. Its a fantastic system and thankfully its success proved to the market that we want something for hardcore gamers.

It will be the 2nd best selling home Console ever and the most profitable.

Given they don't have the huge losses they had early on with the 360 like RROD, and that Live launch aligned is much more active, and they have microtransactions in nearly all of their 1st party titles, yeah it probably is much more profitable than the 360 was in the same time frame.

That said, no doubt they are disappointed in sales, hence them no longer providing hardware shipment numbers anymore.

I recall predicting PS4 will be over the XB1 2:1 by the end of the year and getting ridiculed for it, but now it's looking like a real possibility.

Love to see the impact of a significant price cut. Like the $299 bundle being a permanent thing (until the next cut).

I'm like 90% positive we'll see a Slim model released next year for under 300, maybe even as low as 249 since Sony is already willing to drop the price to 299 over the weekend. I doubt they'd be selling it for 299 with a game bundled if they were taking a loss on it, I mean they might not be making any money off of the game, but the system itself has to cost less than 299 to make right now and they are okay with eating the cost of the game since it's just a first party HD collection and a Slim model could cut that cost down nicely.

1.8m > 2.3m in percentage lol

They are so dumb.

BTW they are using the super high estimate for Xbone sales... 18m? C'mon... it is more like 16m shipped.

Not only that, but Microsoft tends to stuff the channels during the holiday period. I really doubt they're even at 15 million sold.

We had Nintendo fans predicting PS4 and X1 would bomb because Wii U had bombed.

How wrong they where.

I'll admit that I thought Wii U would do much better than it did and that PS4 wouldn't do as well as it is, but that was before Wii U's lineup turned to shit in January 2015 (prior to that point the "launch window" wasn't bad and there was no reason to believe Wind Waker and a 3D Land sequel would be their only other games that year), and before we saw that PS4 was a complete knockout and would have a stranglehold on most of the worthwhile new IP.

Xbox is doing basically exactly how I expected, though. (I thought PS4 would be pretty similar, I suppose underestimating the power Sony has in Europe.)

I still have hope in the Wii U

I remember this too. Consoles were doomed because the market didn't want another Wii. Made little sense.

The huge surge in PC gaming was the only actual threat.

Congrats Sony, now please take more risks in developing new IP's and bring in more exclusive games because the last thing I played on my PS4 was Until Dawn and before it, Bloodborne.

I have still hope in the Wii U

If true then its a fools hope, its dead and was so before it came out.

A 360 /PS3 power level equivalent console with a stupid gimmick at almost 300 pounds 7 years after the 360 and PS3 was idiotic to say the least.

The fair weather buyers of the Wii where never coming back, fads only last a short while.

Even before Wii U came out, articles claimed the end of consoles due to rising popularity of mobile games.

PC gaming was never a threat, we can have both. There never actually has been a threat to consoles other than console manufacturers fucking up themselves.

"Fair weather buyers"? Wii console sales were at their height during the height of the recession.

I think fair weather is not the right word. There was a crowd of people who were enamored with the Wii controls back then on an inexpensive system. That crowd seems to have moved on. Nintendo outside of that Wii explosion has been on a downward trend of Nintendo faithful who keep each console afloat usually as a second console.

People who bought it because it was the in "thing", a gimmick, a fad and on Oprah etc.

They where never coming back and it was those people that lifted it above the core Nintendo home market of between 25 - 30 million, the same market they have been peddling to since N64.

Wii was an anomaly, the data backs that statement.

Fair weather may have been incorrectly used.

He means the casual market that bought the console when it was a huge deal in the mainstream.

When Wii U hit the Wii craze already dropped off and so did those buyers.

Things can still sell just fine during a recession, especially things like video games that distract people from said recession.

Well deserved. Sony takes a lot of shit from fanboys for lack of first party and OS features, but IMO they executed this generation extremely well. Despite no AAA first party for Q4 they made key 3rd party deals that will boost sales. 2016 the first party hits (same as year three for PS3) which will allow Sony to lap the competition again (2x sales = lapped).

PC rigs being far easier to build for yourself and the insanely cheap prices and deals for PC games definitely had some people shift over. I personally thought of the possibility it would make a dent in the next set of consoles. But yeah obviously we're seeing there's more than enough room for both.

So you had a pretty fun year... next one Uncharted 4?

I thought PS4 is way ahead in terms of OS features.

Nintendo outside of that Wii explosion has been on a downward trend of Nintendo faithful who keep each console afloat usually as a second console.

"Outside of that Wii explosion," Nintendo also produced the even-more-successful Nintendo DS. Which, by the way, didn't sell at all like a fad - it sold moderately well out the gate, and only exploded once the hit software showed up (which was before Wii came out, by the way).

I'd say the Wii success comes more from successful market execution (and the N64/GameCube/Wii U failures from poor market execution) and a decent library with mass appeal (vs. the N64/GameCube/Wii U library's exclusive focus on the core) than from a "craze," especially with software sales continuing to be healthy in both the core and non-core spaces (obviously not in the mature games sector, of course) for years after launch.

It's also worth pointing out that, just like the DS did well and Nintendo then executed well in many of the same areas with Wii, 3DS's struggles telegraphed where Wii U would inevitably go. Turns out the people who didn't flock to HD consoles last gen aren't that enamored with fancy screen tech!

Have you looked at the planned releases for next year by Sony. It looks pretty good.
