Raise the flame shield: Your "controversial" gaming opinion.

All games with digitized sprites are hideous.
ESPECIALLY the Donkey Kong Country games.
Looking at one of the classic DKC games literally cause my eyes physical pain with how ugly they are.

Aigis is basically waifu-tier for a lot of Persona fans and a lot of people HATE Yukari with a passion in Persona circles. This is large part due to the events of the Aigis focused version of Persona 3 called The Answer. Ken is hated precisely because of
his 'hand' in Shinji's death
. Ken and Yukari are actually the most passionately hated characters by the Persona fanbase from the cast of 3.

The Answer is part of why I like Yukari so much, actually. She's one of the few members of the cast that go beyond (enjoyable) anime stereotypes.

I like Aigis, but there's nothing special about her. I actually think Labrys' character (P4A) is a lot more compelling.

Ori and the Blind Forest is much better than anything else released in 2015, and should be considered one of the greatest games of all time (especially in art & music direction).

What's so good about it? Not to be callous but it seemed like just another moody platformer in the vein of Limbo.

Oh. I'm not saying I agree with the Persona fanbase on their Yukari hate. But they really hate her cause of The Answer.
Agreed on Labrys.

Most video games are actually pretty boring.
I can kind of agree with that in the literal sense. I think I can't really get fully grasped by a game anymore and I am constantly feeling like I am wasting time playing them, I feel like I'd even be better watching a TV show. Most games I play now I am just kind of looking forward to it being over (subconciously). This is not some statement for games nowadays, I actually think all games now are far far far superior than most games back in the day, most old games are garbage compared to now, yet we all cry like it's the worst time.

But I'm just getting old and have such little time, games take such a fucking commitment and all you crazed highschoolers here keep bitching at every game that doesnt have 60+ hour of content. Let them have some simple games dammit!

A game with a 5 hour or less length is a plus to me now...

Amnesia isn't scary. Like, at all.

It looks pretty scary to me.

Play the game and you will understand why it's one of the best games of 2015 (or all time for some people with me being one of those) it's music and atmosphere gives you an amazing sense of discovery and wonder, the colors in the game are vibrant and makes it look like a masterpiece. In terms of gameplay it feels great and plays great. The story is pretty great and is very well done. Nothing is done wrong in this game aside with some small nitpicks people have and maybe combat but why would you expect ori to kill everything or be super strong. This game is a must have because of the experience that comes with the game.

Fallout 4 is a terrible game with mediocre gameplay, shallow RPG elements, broken dialogue system, garbage quests, dull characters, and a bland world. It's scored so well just because of Bethesda's massive hype machine.

It's good if you're having fun with it, but I didn't.

- Like movies, I think Video Games that reflect reality will continue to fall short until the teams start becoming more diverse (and i'm not talking about "Russia, german, American - were all different!" diverse) and their leaders as well... because currently... even high budget titles suck at capturing culture that's not from a western civilization. I'll take a step further to state my hate of when all white teams develop asian characters and vice versa... even worse when they both showcase black characters. for every passable character there's a thousand crappy and offensive characters. I'd rather you just stop and animate some fucking stick figures.

- 80 percent of AAA titles aren't fun... they don't even seem to be made to be fun. instead they're just tech showcases... glorified demoes directed by Michael Bay... for example: Uncharted is a game that isn't really all that fun. it just looks good... i found more fun with Max Payne 3... and i didn't find that game much fun either... more like an exercise in third person shooting mechanics

- Games with "Strong female lead" and "Witty asshole but meek male' sidekicks need to be burned in fire.

- AAA Games in 2015 are too politically correct and creativity is being stifled. Smaller budget titles look and play better.

- I root for EA to fix NBA Live because competition is a good thing. With that said... NFL2K needs to exist.

- After playing the demo at best buy... the Forza Horizon 2 demo is way more fun than the Driveclub retail release I own. I pray each day that Ridge Racer, Midnight Club & GT Sport come soon so i can forget about Driveclub.

- I hate Ubisoft's name... they're lucky they have Assassin's creed and the Tom Clancy games or I wouldn't buy a single game from them. THQ didn't see a dime from me for the same reason.

- I stopped playing MGSV after the hospital intro because I panned my camera 360 degrees and didn't feel like exploring the open world. Open world titles that big are too Intimidating to walk around in. I haven't completed GTAV for the exact same reason... too much travel. Not enough fun.

- Linear Games > Open World... (assassins creed gets a small pass because I like reliving historic moments in video games)

- I think all gamers who purchase 60 dollar "multiplayer only" titles are suckers.

thats all i can think of for now.

I love climbing Ubisoft's towers and trying to find the collectibles they put everywhere. Mostly because they usually create well-designed, beautiful and atmospheric worlds and it allows me to see every nook and cranny.
I know it's shallow gaming, but I don't care. I see it as virtual tourism.

Call it dumbed down, call it a shooter with RPG elements, call it a poor legacy to the Fallout franchise, if you want.

Fallout 4 is the first Bethesda game I really like.

I hate most japanese games. Something about the generic art, the pedo-bait girls, the shitty combination of bombastic orchestral scores and terribad speed metal. I just can't.

RE4 was good.

This is the only reason I could imagine myself playing any Assassin's Creed game. The tone and style of those games annoy me to no end and I can't stand playing them, BUT if I would play them I would take my enjoyment solely from activating, unlocking and collecting stuff.

Lego City Undercover is one of the most fun games I've ever played and to me all the story missions were completely secondary game to me. I 100% that game and thought the game was excellent only because of the huge amount of things to find, collect and unlock.

Too bad Ubisoft's takes on this type of gameplay are in games that overtry and overdo "mature" themes and characters. I think those hooded assassin characters in AC games are perhaps the most stupid and naive characters ever created. The Watch_Dogs guy was simply just boring and so average in every way that it was just unmemorable. The AC guys however are annoying as hell.

So, basically the one reason people usually hate Ubisoft for is the one reason I can feel love for them.

Text > voice acting.

I think it is contingent on the game and genre. RPGs like the Witcher or Fallout should not have voice acting, especially from the protagonist. More linear games like Tomb Raider, the voice acting is acceptable, although it can go overboard at times.

There has not been a good Mario game since Mario 64.

Everything since then has been an attempt to go in a different direction that doesn't feel like Mario (Sunshine, Galaxies,) or is just a rehash of previous games (NSMB, SMM).

The closest thing to a good Mario game since 64 is 3D World. 3D World was great except the controls made it an absolute nightmare to control 90% of the time.

Galaxy is a great game, but they tried something so different that my brain doesn't classify it as a Mario game.

(The non-controversial way of putting this: I haven't enjoyed a Mario game since 64. Probably because my gaming preferences have changed drastically in the last 10 years, and I don't find much joy in platformers anymore.)

i can relate. Still waiting for a Mario 64 kind of Mario.

Fallout 4 is the first Bethesda game I really like.

It's also the best game Bethesda has ever made, and if I had to sum it up with 1 word it'd be 'tolerable.'

Xenoblade is the worst Xeno game and obscenely overrated. Xenosaga is the best.

Oh and FFXIII is underrated; it's not remotely as bad as people say it is.

What's so good about it? Not to be callous but it seemed like just another moody platformer in the vein of Limbo.

You must be thinking of a different game. Ori is bright and full of color. The art and soundtrack are amazing and the way Ori controls is very satisfying. Tight controls and fun abilities make moving around the world a joy. While I don't agree with it being the best game of 2015, it's definitely one of the best.

I really hate most western games that look realistic. I don't play videogames for that shit

Give me anime designs, cartoony designs, hypersexualized designs, etc

I can only really play Japanese games, indie games, and TF2 now

I'd agree in some cases but it depends on the game. In long RPGs I certainly prefer text or at least the option to read ahead and skip spoken dialogue.
Yeah, actually I agree. It's just that I'm indeed playing a dialogue-heavy RPG and I vastly prefer turning voices off, both because I'm a speedy reader and because screw animu squeaks, lol. But you're right, I don't want voices to disappear from, say, action games, if they're done right.

-Skyrim is better than Oblivion and its not even close.

-MP shooters are borefests.

-AAA games don't take enough risks and play it too safe. The lack of creativity is shockingly bad and makes me sad.

-I really don't get Monster Hunter. Maybe I should use a guide or something but I just go out and kill monsters for loot with no real payoff or progress. What is the point of this game again? I just don't understand it.

- I really think it sucks that you have to pay for online on the consoles. Why should I have to pay a fee to use a service I'm already paying for in the first place? Is there no way to reverse this disastrous thread? Really hoping Nintendo doesn't follow suit and start charging for online next gen.

- The "git gud" meme that is prevalent in the souls community is really obnoxious and just makes the community look like a bunch of elitist tryhards.

Pixel at needs to go. It looks terrible and there's no reason to use it unless you have no budget.

GTA is overrated. I prefer smaller streamlined open world's like AC because you finish it in 30-40 hours and you're done. GTA is a bore.

Same for Fallout 4.

Emergent gameplay <<<<<<<<< well-designed predefined gameplay.

I don't believe this is controversial at all. And it makes sense: as production costs go up, making a game with high production values costs hundreds of millions, so studios have to play it safe if they want to get their money back. A hundred-million AAA bomb could be fatal.

AAA games are the blockbuster movies of video games.

Talos Principle is better than Portal 2 in every way.

Well, it's definitely on par with Portal in my opinion. Great setting, great puzzles.

The only place I would differ is I think Portal's core mechanic (portals) are a more exciting idea than lasers, jammers, fans, etc.

Pixel art is fine as long as the person working on it is an actual pixel artist and not someone going with it so they can push out something simple and easy and call it a retro throwback (which usually ends up being totally inaccurate anyways)

  • I think Rockstar's games are barely less clunky than a Bethesda title, stifle exploration with map markers and GPS trails, and missions are just pocket spaces with linear ass scripted events ready to fail-state you if you bother to make use of the open-world they built.
  • Walking simulators or exploration games are just banking off old Looking Glass environmental storytelling design...except they took elements out, and replaced them with nothing but aesthetic/writing differences.
  • Voice acting has damaged player choice in RPGs, diluting dialog options to let player express a role.
  • Games industry is too polar with scope, either giant open worlds or linear ass wannabe movie experiences...when Deus Ex hit the right middle-ground over a decade ago.
  • The only Mario Games I've really liked were the 3d Galaxy games, and Mario Kart. Not only do I find the 2d games boring, but that indies have done a better job evolving the 2d platformer.
  • I think JRPG monster designs are crap the majority of the time, a mish-mash of animal influences and sometimes religious symbolism nonsense thrown in to look cool rather than make contextual sense in the worlds they make.
  • Like the story for Mass Effect 1, but think it's one of the most poorly designed RPGs I've ever played. Its RPG elements are poorly implemented compared to 2&3, and so poorly balanced.
  • I think FFVIII and FFX are 2 of the worst games in the series.
  • Portal 1-2 are the only Valve games I like.
  • I'm glad linear cinematic shooters are becoming rare this gen, they nearly killed my love of the genre last gen. They're only slightly less dumb than rail shooters.
  • Bioshock was poor-man's System Shock 2 that got attention because console release and its art.
  • Far Cry 2 was better than 3 and 4. It didn't have the garbage story missions trying to be a movie, and was just the choose your own approach combat throughout.

Nintendo is a company that produces gaming platforms for kids, and purchasing the wiiu has been a waste of money thus far.

Although I *am* looking forward to starfox.

I understand what your saying but I don't believe it was like that in the past. Devs will come up with a new concept that is geniunely interesting and instead of designing gameplay around this interesting concept, they just slap whatever is popular in as the gameplay.

A great example of this is, Remember Me, which has a great concept about memories and remixing them to change reality. Now instead of coming up with gameplay that fits around this concept, they make the gameplay lite traversal and a poor mans version of the Batman combat system. The gameplay doesn't fit what they are trying to do in the game narrative or design wise so why does this game have the Batman combat? Because that combat system is popular right now. The game is actually made worse for having this combat system instead of something different that actually fits what the game is trying to do. And how well did this game sell anyway? The game has a 70 metacritic rating so I'm guessing it didn't sell all that well. Wouldn't it have been better to have niche, but dedicated fanbase that think the game is great and try and talk it up to anyone who will listen or have it be mediocre to everyone and all but forgotten a few weeks after release? My money is on the former.

Sure, but it's just not possible with the current AAA model. That's why their followup game, Life is Strange, was a low budget affair.

The average person bought Remember Me for the Batman combat and the parkour, not the memory remixing. The problem is that these aspects of the game were badly executed.

Word of mouth can only get you so far.
