Looks like a vertical slice, which they could very well give to us as a demo
bundled with XV

Only thing that disappoints me are Barret's sunglasses. Literally can't understand why.

Also, really curious to see how they'll handle the world map.

  • Graphics & art-direction seem on point
  • Barret actually looks human now :D
  • SUPER SUPER skeptical about the combat changes. They may be fun but completely changing genres (as it appears right now) is something any fan of turn-based RPGs or this game in particular have a right to be concerned about.

I'd argue that its "core" gameplay is still intact, because regardless of whether it's ATB or turn-based, it's still heavily an RPG. You just have to be more attentive now and won't be standing in one place.

And Resident Evil didn't come out two decades after the original. But if it did, I would have argued that the way in which a remake is shaped is up to the developer and doesn't necessarily have to keep its combat exactly the same. Given the quality of what we've seen so far, if you're really a fan of FFVII, then you'd appreciate what they're doing.

I'm just going to link my post from the last page: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=188065348&postcount=2016

Who knows how it will turn out in the end but at least they're thinking about/are aware that FF7R shouldn't be a straight up action game.

Not bad, I'm liking what I'm seeing so far.

But Barret needs to drop those sunglasses. They do not fit his design at all. But he definitely looks better than his advent children design.

2) Do we know that it isn't just some overly elaborate weird ATB-like system? Is it confirmed that you have direct control over character movement in combat?

We don't, and considering the mystery of that bar separate from the HP, MP and Limit bars, we should probably wait and see, but we're already a couple dozen pages past jumping to conclusions, so...

Edit: Come to think of it though, this thread was going to be crazy regardless of what they did. If they did stick wholly to the original ATB system as is, there'd most certainly be a bunch of "This isn't 1997 anymore, I don't want this archaic shit Square" in the thread, anyway.

Not gonna lie, I'm disappointed in the combat. I like action rpgs, but I just wanted it to stay turn-based (with some changes) + HD. Oh well, I'll live. Still hyped!

They seem to be keeping the tone and events mostly the same (going by the trailer), which is great. I hope it stays that way.

Cloud looks pretty scrawny though. They need to make his arms a bit bigger cuz he has a bobble head look. lol

I hope everyone bitching understands for the longest time everyone asked for a remake, not an uprez. I'm quite surprised people are shocked at a different combat system, TBH.

What a weird argument being pushed by some people chastising those who want the original gameplay.

let's spin it the other way: if you want this to be an ARPG so badly, why don't you look for it in a new game? y'know, one without ties to a classic?

Couldn't keep up with the thread after page 20 or so, is there any speculation on how combat works? Seems like the bar under the name fills up as you attack and empties/cools down when you're not attacking.

"change resistant"

the game has changed genre, lol

It is effectively a different game with the same story.

It's not longer a JRPG?

And, yes, it's a different game. That's why it's called a "remake" instead of a "remaster" or a port.

... In all seriousness, you know what sacrilegious things I've done with remakes? I've played Resident Evil Remake... without tank controls. I've played Final Fantasy IV DS... with auto-battle turned on. I've played GTA V... in first person mode. I've played Goldeneye... without Pierce Brosnan. I've played Metroid Prime... without C-stick controls. I've played Tomb Raider... with QTE's added. I've played Metroid: Zero Mission... with a map to guide me.

The game still looks like a menu-based JRPG to me. Just not turn-based. Even the original Final Fantasy games evolved from straight up to turned-based to ACTIVE turn-base for many installments.

I'm open-minded enough to give it a shot.

Still, curious if we actually have full control of characters or not. We have a command menu to use. That there says turn based or at least looks like it.

Attack/Magic/Summon/Item/Defend.

Hopefully we got more details on what the battle system is going to offer..

They're more than remasters, but keep intact the story and gameplay. Their biggest changes are in graphics, the biggest hurdle most people have when "going back" to older titles.

FFIV's biggest changes are not in the graphics, but in the game difficulty. I'm pretty sure you two have not played FFIV remake, and if you have, I'm definitely certain you haven't played the original.

When someone asks for a remake, they tend to mean a game with flaws ironed out or given the benefit of modern technology.

I don't think that when they asked for a remake, they wanted a different game with the same story.

what is with everyones hatred for action rpgs?
did Action RPGs kill your parents or something?

I don't hate ARPGs, but that's ALL the genre is now in the AAA space. I also happen to like turn-based a lot more, which is why most of my gaming is begrudgingly done on handhelds.

If I wanted to play ARPGs, I'd do it with the hundreds of options out there.

You're comparing adding maps or camera control options to an entire gameplay overhaul. This actually proves my point, as your examples of other remakes are just gameplay tweaks and QOL additions to games, which is what some people hoped for from a FF7 remake.

I don't get what the point in discussing it now is though, aside from expressing disappointment. SE has made this decision and I doubt they're going back on it. Look at what they did with FFXV - they're clearly over turn based combat in their mainline AAA console RPGs.

It's disappointing for some but this is their "creative vision".

You're missing the point.
Most of us aren't championing or even particularly wanting an ARPG, it's just that we are respecting SE's choice to try something new with the remake, instead of being butthurt over some ambiguous footage which doesn't really show much in the first place.

People can like whatever they want, and if they don't like action or want the game exactly the same, that is their right too.

But I will ask the people who are turned off this:

At least wait until more details come out, like whether or not materia will be in it, and just more general details on the battle system. You only saw a few seconds of clips, we just don't know the full details yet.

Also, try it before you fully judge. Who knows, maybe you'll really like it. I can name a bunch of games I was turned off to at first, and once I played them I turned out to really like it. I remember when Castlevania: Lords of Shadow first got announced I was like "What??? This isn't Castlevania!" But I really liked it. It might surprise you if you give the new FFVII a chance.

I did. It needs to be its own thing. i have FF7 and love it. But I didn't want the same game with "cleaned up graphics". I wanted a full blown re imaging of the game. That's what the PS3 tech demo was. It's what sparked more interest in this game being remade than any other game

I think it looks pretty damn great. But they have so much work ahead of them. Will it even be done during the PS4's lifetime?

Before someone complains about mood and personality, let's give these gifs some context.

Gif 2: Here to complete a mission that involves bombing a reactor, not personally invested in the interests of those he's working for.

"Re" is synonymous with "do over".

Also, did you play the game for the turn based combat or the story? I can see complaining about a Souls game being made turn based since 99% of that game is combat - and a very specific type. We are moving from turn based to something else. I'm not saying I'm happy or disappointed in what was shown, I'm saying people need to understand the focus of FFVII and understand secondary systems can change with a "re".
