FAST Racing NEO |OT| When Everyone's Fast, No One Will Be

Yeah, it also looks incredibly jagged on my no brand TV (scaling to 1080p I guess), but I don't mind. Game moves too fast to notice most of the time. Definitely looks off during the track intros though.

After finish the first cup I have mixed feeling.

graphically is a bit underwhelming beacuse that poor IQ, and lack of details on the circuits, but the 60fps are strong and it has a incredible sense of speed.

Gameplay wise, I loved it. Tight controls, good circuits layout and clever boost positioning. Looking forward to spend more time on it

Glad to see this topic and Yakuza's with a lot of movement on GAF. If only Rodea's recepction have been that positive :(

When a game is clean like Zelda or Mario on wiiu it's very nice but even on Mario kart the aliasing was a bit annoying but nothing like Fast. Really distracting here and since the game is fast the moving edges are acting like crazy

Long time I didn't see such aliasing. I'll stop speaking about this as it is as it is

Oh, no. I meant since you said your God was watching TV.

What's up with the cars occasionally appearing to crash into nothing? Like there are certain pieces of track where you'll here a "clunk" and the car will shake and slow down a bit and it happens at the same places every time no matter what angle you approach at. Physics bug?

I'm on automatic and it's 1080p

Edit : just tried 720p it's more or less the same. I don't have any issue in particular with other games so ...

NotLiquid's screen shot earlier in this thread is how the game looks on my system:

Don't know what's causing the strange output on your system. The screen shot you posted looks like it's 16 color+480p or something.

Sure it's not minor projectiles/hazards???

They can be subtle.

What unlocks new cars? I got 3 after finishing the first 3 cups and nothing for the fourth cup.

Do you have to...use the most recently-unlocked car to unlock a new one?

Most likely someone hit you from behind while boosting. Otherwise...eurojank?

I would imagine more might unlock once you do the higher tiers or via the time trials.

hmm. id love to see an explanation behind how the render works. it has a wierd blocky look to it, but i dont think the game is simply rendering at a lower res. its like different objects render at different resolutions, and theres that wierd vertical interlacing artefact like its seen in killzone shadowfall when online.

I stream the GFX output to my Apple Watch!

LOOKS EVEN BETTER!!!

Back in the day I remember playing four player split screen Mario Kart 64 on a little 9" TV. It looked awesome. :p

So, easy enough to say FRN is not F-Zero but is still polished and easily stands as its own thing?

They are using an interlacing technique similar to Killzone Shadowfall multiplayer. Only it's much more apparent because of the lower resolution. It also depends a lot on the track, but in the worst case objects appear half-res in motion.

Yeah, it happens when you speed up a hilltop I think. You are propably flying just a little bit and the landing makes you shake. Shin'en should tone this animation down or make it depending on the fall height since it feels like the landing shake is always the same no matter how hard you hit the road and that can be confusing.

I find playing online, the other players are just so far in front !

Getting boost power is also not very fun.

The game is very fast and plays very nicely on the gamepad !

They probably should've went a bit more wild with the design like F-Zero X !!!

If I could change one thing about this game it would to be to make steering a little sharper, outside of subsonic you are wall riding for the fastest times and it's stupid, all the tracks are only a few lanes wide which means you rub walls way too often.

from what I have seen if you are good at a track you will keep the lead unless you crash out since there's no power ups or hidden boosts to help people at the back of the pack, both good and bad for different reasons.

Yep, same impression here from my side... Guess they are doing a lot of tricks to get all that stuff running...

Yeah theyve worked will within their limitations though. Elements going for a "pixelated" look and working their tech limitations into their art does pretty well at hiding it all to the average player.

I haven't played too much of this yet, but I'm loving it so far. I'm sure the later difficulties will kick my ass because as much as I love AG racing, its not something I excel at. Oh, and I really want, no NEED, a soundtrack release for this game!

Yep.

Played a bit of this, definitely feels like 90% of F-Zero, but that is better than 0%. Beautiful, fun fast game too.

Is it like MK8 when you go online with friends? So a lobby?
Sorta...
You have two options when you go online
- Everyone
- Friends

While playing with friends, the game will put everyone on your friend list in the same room automatically.
There are no "tournament and/or private lobbies" so you can't decide who's in and who's out.

haha wow. um that is NOT how it looks on my system. Do you have some sort of "edge enhancement" etc feature enabled on your TV? The game def has some aliasing issues but not anywhere near that extreme. Time to throw that tv out and buy a new one bud. :P

From videos, the tracks didn't look particularly narrow to me. I'd say that it is a combination of the ships being massive + ships having low grip + ships having limited turn options (comparing all those things to F-Zero).

Also, having one button held down for boosting probably doesn't help either.

You don't lose as much momentum when grinding the wall as you do in F-Zero, so it doesn't really bother me. I'm sure there's a combination of turning plus leaning that can result in more accurate turns, but I haven't figured it out.

I like using the boost as an "attack". Just get near someone and boost into them/next to them and they will spin out for a bit.

Probably a minor thing but I really dislike how they placed phase pads right in the middle of some turns.

Unless you have alien hands it makes leaning and phase switching really hard (if not impossible) at the same time.

Is the soundtrack typical Shin'en awesome? Like Nanostray level?
From what I've heard in videos it might be Martin Schioeler's best OST for a Shin'en game (I've played to Nanostray 2, Jett Rocket 1 & 2, Nano Assault EX, Art of Balance and Fun Fun Golf).

Manfred Lizner OST inspired by Chrish Huelsbeck in the first shin'en games are also great.

The boost orbs really, really need to respawn quicker. It's bad enough when there are only two rows of orbs in front of you and your two opponents are taking them, but even worse in the sections when there is just one row of orbs. Even if you aren't right on the ass of the player in front of you there's a long enough delay for it to be a problem. In a sense, it's an anti comeback element because it allows the player a little ahead to grow his lead.
Yeah, I understand what you say.
Though keep in mind that if you are in the back of another car you can make the him "spin out" by using just one orb which could prove to be a big advantage (especially in multiplayer).

I think this game controls much better than the Wii one. Although I only got to play about 30 minutes last night.

I tried 2 online matches and it seems like people can drop out without you even knowing. I was in first place on a race only to find out what started with 7 racers ended up with only 3

But that interlacing is only present at the track presentation, to give a TV monitor feel, right? Once the vehicles are on the starting line, I see no interlacing.

Are you using the bumper to phase switch? I use X and have had no problems of the sort. Feels more natural anyways with the lower thumb on A.

I don't think it's the objects, it is motion blur which is rendered at half-res.

Digital Foundry might shed some light if they'll do an article.
I'm too curious on what tricks Shin'en used.

Great game, having lots of fun with it.

But my god, the chromatic aberration in the cutscenes are really spectacularly ugly, and I'm not even usually annoyed by the effect.
