Final Fantasy VII PS4 |OT| One last time before the remake

Really enjoying picking this up again. I borrowed the guide though like my first play through to get the hidden stuff. I'm just at Junon after beating Bottom Swell (tehehe), furthest I've ever got after trying and failing to play through it in the past.

I think the none existent loads and analogue controls are very much helping with the enjoyment though.

Is it weird that a port of a game from 1997 might be one of the best games I'm playing this year?

I always lowkey avoided this game since the big Aeris twist was spoiled and I read people's opinions on the writing and shit. And now that I'm playing this I'm really happy to make this experience since there is a TON of stuff I never knew about; also, despite this looking dated, some parts of the game really look better than I imagined them to look like.

In a world where games compete in blowing their scope out of proportion and offering checklist open-world gameplay with physics integration for the lulz and almost ZERO initiatives to build compelling worlds and characters, this fucking JRPG from the 90s feels super fucking fresh to me. Ten hours in and I already care more for the these blocky characters than for pseudo-deep protagonists that look like humans.

I really wish that FFIX gets the exact same treatment, 3x speed and deactivating random battles make the game so fucking good and remove that barrier between today and 90s RPGS for me. They managed to make grinding FUN with those simple enhancements.

Really loving this, and I have a feeling I haven't seen anything yet (at Fort Connor right now).

Aww man I'm so envious of you for being able to enjoy this for the first time. The game is going to get a lot better now with some of the most enjoyable parts coming up ahead. I wish I were able to replay the Cosmo Canyon part for the first time, its one of my favorite parts of the game.

No they don't.

This is fan-fic category.

They just cuddle. At best they spoon.

Relevant discussion from the 10th Anniversary Ultimania:

Kitase: "The event on the airship the night before the final battle was done by Katou as well, wasn't it."
Nojima: "Oh, the bit with that risqué/suggestive dialogue? I wasn't the one who wrote that, that was Katou too."
Interviewer: “Words aren't the only way to tell someone how you feel", that line, right? That's a rather mature conversation for a FF game.
Kitase: "Although I remember we had to tone down a version that was too strong."
Nojima: "The original idea was more extreme. The plan was for Cloud to walk out of the chocobo stable in the airship, followed by Tifa leaving while she kept looking around, but Kitase rejected it. But I think perhaps no one expected that line to be so important [laughs]"

Relevant discussion from the 10th Anniversary Ultimania:

The scene changes depending on whether or not you dated Tifa at the Golden Saucer, right? If you don't date, they just have a really cute cuddle, but if you did, Final Heaven all night~. Get that boy, Tifa. I never ever got around to dating Tifa or Yuffie at the GS, so I can't remember.

Where's my Barret cuddle, Square?! Most important scene needed for the remake, right there.

Got the Chocochampion trophy :D

How do you get the Bromance one to trigger? I've done everything I need to make sure Barret's date mechanic is its highest and I left Cosmo Canyon and went to the hotel at the Gold Saucer but nothings happening.

Can't wait to get this one so I don't have to think about it and just enjoy playing.

It happens as part of the story just before the
ancient forest

The Gold Saucer date event is part of the story. If you got a date with Barret and the trophy didn't pop then it glitched. If you went to the GS and nothing is happening it means you're not at that part of the story yet.

I would love to see 8 and 9 get the same treatment, especially the cheats. 8 needs the, "push button to win Triple Triad". I hate that card game so much and to really exploit the hell out of the draw system you need to be good at cards.

If you're stuck, just follow a guide, there's a good card guide on GameFAQs to get everything and get every area's rules set to Open as you progress through the game.

First thing I'm going to do if/when VIII comes to the PS4 play cards for a few hours. I have a file saved on the PS3/Vita set in Balamb Garden set around 3 hours in with everything needed for Lion Heart by the end of Disc 1, Punishment by Dollett and enough spells to last me for ages, pretty Card/Card Mod. Do it once, save on the majority of grinding later on in the game besides for a ton of Krysta cards for Holy in Galbadia Garden.

Dude. They bang.

It is not canon that they have relations under the Highwind. Tifa is basically Cloud's sister, as seen in Advent Children and the other stuff to follow FFVII.

Aeris is Cloud's true love. He's going to be alone until he dies and reunites with her in the Lifestream where she's waiting for him. Aeris has always been the better girl. I'm sure the Remake will clear this up.

What the hell? No.

Cloud ends up with Tifa. You will see.

Aerith sucks anyways.

I hope this remake becomes a huge hit and scores a whole bunch of tweenie bopper fans.

Team Jacob VS Team Edward will have nothing on Team Tifa VS Team Aeris.

Though not as strongly worded, this is my interpretation and always has been. Tifa was never the love interest. She just obviously means a lot to Cloud. Due to such, I never took that scene to imply sex. Never. Just if they did or did not see an awkward moment between them, a private moment.

I'd also add that for me, that interpretation actually damages the story and Clouds character.

Wow, see? this is what too much shipping can do to you.

The creators themselves practically tell you what that scene meant, and they even had a more risque version of it (I hope Nomura uses that one in the remake lol), not to mention everything Nomura an Nojima have said about them in interviews and the ultimanias or the merchandise like valentines an christmas cards featuring them, and I'm not saying what is or isn't canon but the point is that Cloud and Tifa's relationship has never been treated as a siblings relationship.

okayt this is my theory
i think that cloud + tifa is more logical, tifa is cloud first crush, he enters soldier because of her, tifa is the one that helps cloud recover, tifa is the only that can kiss cloud in the gold saucer date.

they also adopt a kid in advent children, and when aeris appears in the life stream, zack appears together of her, they are clearly a couple

my theory is: original cloud before impersonation of zack, loves tifa, but when he impersonates zack, he likes aeris, aeris is confused because cloud impersonation, she clearly like cloud in zack personality.

When he recovers i would guess that he loves tifa but feels guilt toward the death of aeris and beating her

Got to the end of "Disc 1" on my playthrough last night. The x3, battle boost and no random encounters just make this game so enjoyable to play

Yuffie also kisses Cloud, but the rest is pretty much how I see it, yeah.

Just got to the Forgotten City. My god, I'd forgot about that theme. One of the stand out tracks of the game. It also really makes me want to play Mass Effect for some reason.

IIRC, near the beginning of the game, after you sleep in the basement of the bar, some of the townsfolk talk about spying on "what you and Tifa did together last night" or something to that effect.

I always thought it was implied there was some sexual contact from the get-go.

Whats odd, is I only remember this from the PSX version, I can't find the line when I play the PC version.

I think the love triangle in the original game was pretty ambiguous. Depending on your choices, Cloud could really lean either way.

The expanded universe is definitely pushing towards Tifa though. Then again, Advent Children sort of beat around the bush...

I'm happy you're enjoying one of my Top 3 All-Time games, b.

Finished it last night, with getting my very first platinum trophy!

First time replaying it all the way through since launch, it was a fantastic experience. I certainly felt some parts where a little rushed through, like the huge materia and the north crater. Really wish they had it as one long continuous path instead of splitting the teams up, but that does add a narrative of an all out assault towards the end.

I was undecided after playing the game all those years ago. I could see arguments both ways and wasn't sure which way to lean. I felt it was done deliberately so and left ambiguous.

However after all the supplement material and interviews, watching Advent Children and playing Crisis Core? Cloud and Tifa all the way. Zack and Aeris too. Just the thought of Aeris being with someone other than Zack feels wrong, just like how if feels the same for Cloud to be with someone other Than Tifa. Playing FFVII again just now drives that point even more so as i picked up more references to Zack and how Aeris only knew Cloud when he was emulating Zack, and Tifa was the one who knew the real him before and after.

Cloud is a Gaffer, confirmed. (warning: link to Anonymous Confessions thread post)

All I wanted to do was read some FF7 posts, lol

I honestly just ship Tifa with Cloud I had no idea people viewed those two as siblings.

Aeris is Zack's girl. Sorry man. It's who Aeris always loved and it's more than hinted and canonized via Crisis Core and the ending of Advent Children.

Game is really good. Who would've thought. Played 11h so far (Lvl22). Arrived in Costa del Sol. My favourite party: Cloud, RedXIII, Yuffie. Don't know if I'm going too fast though^^ Constantly in new locations. But I don't have problems in battles, so I guess it's fine.

If you haven't realized yet, the game will occasionally force you to use a character, so it's not a bad idea to give everyone a turn here and there so they don't get left in the dust, level-wise.

Inactive party members level up too, just at a slightly slower rate than active members. I think the game is generous enough with inactive experience that you can use whatever party you want when it lets you and still be okay when it forces you to use a specific one.

Usually yes.

There really is only one really bad situation:

The 1 on 1 fight with Barret Vs Dyne. That shit sucks if you haven't used Barret at all since Midgar.

Maybe Aerith in the Temple of the Ancients as well.

Did they change the rate that inactive party members gain xp for this release? I swear it used to only be like 1/4th of the Active Members XP.

Yeah, pretty much. People saying Tifa and Cloud have a brother/sister relationship are a bit off. Tifa is like the woman that Cloud needs, but doesn't understand/deserve until late in the game.

Also the fact that Aeris was Zack's girlfriend, at least for a while, means that Cloud was probably getting caught up in his illusion and that was a part of it. I'm pretty sure that this is the classic love triangle thing, except it is as if they want the player to interpret and get attached to one person or the other. However, by the end of the game, it is pretty clear that Cloud and Tifa become close. And with the developer dialogue, well, that pretty much seals the deal.

Personally I like both of them and it's hard to choose, but with the natural course of events that happen in the game, I'm definitely team Tifa. Especially since, as the game puts it, Tifa stood by Cloud when he was literally a vegetable.

EDIT:

By the way, what is everyone's party setup? Mine consists of the original three, Cloud, Barrett and Tifa. Cloud is the all arounder, focusing on melee, and of course he has some attack magic like Lightning and summon. Barrett is my tank, and I give him Cover as well as Enemy Skill. Later on in the game I usually set him up with some really high HP increasing Materia as well as Ribbon or whatever will give him negative stat defense. He is my true tank. Tifa is of course a fighter, but she also gets some healing magic. I actually share the healing magic between her and Cloud. One thing about FF VII that I like, that I never used to pay attention to, is how much you can customize Materia and each character's role in battle.
