So do we really have to listen to Trevorrow sucks Episode IX gonna suck until 2019 when it turns out to be good? Because if so that's annoying as all hell. None of you know how he'll do. It's kneejerk cynicism because you didn't like his dinosaur movie. I didn't like Brick or Looper but I'm not worried about VIII because it's a different thing and I trust that Rian, in conjunction with Kathleen and the others at Lucasfilm will ensure that it's good.

People were also moaning about Abrams at first because Into Darkness gave them cholera or something and lens flares, yadda yadda. Jurassic World wasn't even badly directed.

the effect is kind of erotic in a spaceballs schwartz type of way

God, imagine an announcement: Spaceballs The Schwartz Awakens...

Guys! Don´t want to be spoiled or anything, but....

Any impressions from the premier out there?

In one word?

Good.

You'll hear it till then. Jurassic World's reception has steadily sunk online as we further move from its release. Trevorrow isn't well liked amongst Internet movie types.

I don't see how ROTS is better than ROTJ. Jedi may have been a mess pacing-wise, and some of it didn't make a lot of sense, but the themes and characters carried it. ROTS was like bad fanfiction, devoid of believable relationships, motivations, actions, characterizations. This is not for want of trying, if anything it may have tried too hard in some places even if not enough in others, it still failed uniformly to feel organic or true. It had no heart. It's like the difference between new Simpsons and old Simpsons.

Yeah, I feel you on that. Also, even with a Coke-haze Carrie Fisher, the romantic scenes in ROTJ were less painful than ROTS.

Which is a shame because Trevorrow's first film is probably better than anything Abrams has made.

Internet movie types lol. I guess when you put it that way it's really not even worth worrying about. Still annoying.

andrewstanton: How was Star Wars? Great. Nothing more to say. Just go. #spoilerfree

cbfowler: IMO #StarWars fans will be very pleased w/ #TheForceAwakens - A LOT of old fashioned action with plenty of laughs. And sad parts.

GlennWhipp: Quite simply: This is the STAR WARS movie you're looking for. #TheForceAwakens

More reactions I have not seen posted here

Revisited A New Hope last night to kick off my original trilogy revisit before I see Force Awakens. Man, the original movie feels indie sci-fi as fuck.

Why? What has he done to earn your trust? If he's done nothing but make movies you don't like, why would you now expect him to change that?

The last people on Earth at whose feet I'm going to lay down my unconditional loyalty are Hollywood folks. Sorry, but that seems absurd to me. Especially when they've yet to make a a movie I've enjoyed. Good movies don't come out of the ether - you don't will them into existence. They are the products of the people who made them.

Yeah it does. There is basically no dialog for the first 20 minutes. Luke doesn't show up for quite a while. Fantastic start

The first Xmen film was the best comic movie when it came out. It's not the greatest, but at the time it was a relief that someone kinda made an decent comic movie.

X2 is a great film, though. So i'm not entirely sure where youre coming from

X3 starts strong but then becomes worse and worse until you just want everyone dead at the end. Thank goodness for the Singer-led reboot.

X2 is the most offensive because the action in it is TERRIBLE. The Lady Deathstryke fight is downright embarrassing! Aside from THE USUAL SUSPECTS and DAYS OF FUTURE PAST, Singer's movies are utterly devoid of charisma. The lack of charisma is what made SUPERMAN RETURNS the utter turd it was!

So anyway, Trevorrow will be a solid YES MAN for Episode IX. The would never hire a Brad Bird since he's a CONFIRMED FASCIST after TOMORROWLAND!

The script for JW was pretty terrible, and yes im aware that it's a film about a dinosaur theme park and how ridiculous that sounds. That's kinda concerning given that we've had 3 star wars films with pretty terrible writing and not so good character dialogue. So the hope would be that whatever script he gets can carry him for the film because I did enjoy the action in JW in spite of the rest

oh okay i was taking you seriously earlier but now i know not to do that from here on out

ugh, celeb reactions are so overblown

cant wait for the "actual reviews" and see them run back with their tail behind their head.

Lol. I think you're going to be waiting for a while. Negative reactions have still been pretty positive.

I will never understand you guys that are predisposed to hate things out the gate. My guess is that we're probably going to get a crowd pleasing, fun, Star Wars movie with a couple of really neat moments.

Also, the real test of these films will be how they resonate with people. Lots of folks have pointed out the Every's Episode 1 review. He also poorly reviewed A New Hope when it was released. However this movie is reviewed (I anticipate and 8 maybe), it's how regular folks feel about it that will matter.

Because I don't have a problem with Rian's directing specifically and it won't be the same kind of thing or script. Perhaps I'm not internet movie type enough, but I don't deal in absolutes.

You could not possibly be more wrong.

There's a sense of danger in every corner in A NEW HOPE that we take for granted. The Jawas, the Krayyt dragon skeleton, etc. It's the hardest to sit through of all the OT though. I like ROTJ better because of it.

If you want to watch the OT in a meaningful way, do it without phones or devices or distractions. My gf and I have been doing that and ESB was a fucking crackling good time. Jesus Christ look at how much Harrison Ford is acting! So much going on in his face when he goes in the carbon freezing chamber.

Watching the "Anti-Cheese" edits of the prequels on my own, while I watch the OT in the evenings with the wife.
The Anti-Cheese definitely make the prequels better. Not necessarily good, but it definitely makes certain characters, (Jar Jar) more palatable.
There is one cut that is actually more awkward, though. In Ep 2, Anakin's speech about hating sand goes directly into him kissing Padme. It's suuuper weird.

It's kind of amazing that the movie doesn't completely fall apart in the first 30 minutes or so of the movie. You start off with that awesome Star Destroyer opening that sets a really good space action tone, and then the pacing of the movie basically comes to an absolute stop once the droids get on Tatooine and it doesn't really pick up at all until everyone gets to the Death Star.

This thread is so self-serious that it kind of makes sense why so many Star Wars fans find dressing up as Stormtroopers to be appealing. All things are black and white and we all have the same opinions and values in life oh yes so simple...

I think it's interesting you throw this blanket over all the criticism you see of JW and Trevorrow, and in the same breath say you don't deal in absolutes. Whatever. I don't like Trevorrow's movies - all two of them - and I'm not confident that making two lame movies enables to him make a movie I am very invested in. Maybe that makes me an internet movie type, I don't know.

It was.

If anyone hasn't read the Making of Star Wars book, go and read it now! It's practically mandatory reading if you are a Star Wars fan or just interested in moviemaking and film history. It also makes you wonder what George Lucas did in his youth to collect the sort of karma that followed that production. It's a wonder the film was ever made.

Feinberg from the Hollywood Reporter believes that a BP nom and especially Director nom for Abrahms is possible after seeing it last night. Fingers crossed, folks.

That was a joke callback to a previous exchange, nothing more.
