Some feedback from a giant Star Wars fan and radio show host who just finished watching it. This is how they started the radio show this morning.

@TheShowEddie how was it?

@rokabee Freaking great. JJ did it.

Avatar was a risk.

Star Wars spin-offs? Not so much.

Sorry man, but in what sense was Avatar a risk? Story-wise it was certainly more of a retread than can be defended (Pocahontas, Dances With Wolves). And yes it was a feat technologically because it turned out so well (visually), but it was far from the first movie to mo-cap actors. Lord of the Rings did it. Hell even Jar Jar was mo-capped in 1999.

My point is if Avatar's visuals didn't look good in the end, it would have been another generic action flick with middle of the road effects. It would've made back it's budget and the studio would've lived to fight another day. I would argue it's not that much more of a risk than a Star Wars movie with no Jedi.

what time will you guys line up ? my theater doesn't offer reserved seating, I got tickets for the 7pm Thursday showing but plan to go around 4, to get tickets and line up. Is that a good time to get there ?

I can only offer my Spider-Man 3 experience, as that was the last major movie I saw without reserved seating, but 2 hours early was not nearly enough for that.

And given the fact the SW crowds will be much larger, to be honest I'd say 4 hours early at least, depending on how high traffic your theatre sees

What the hell you have me worried right now. I have a 4:40 showing and was planning on going an hour early... but this is on the 23rd

I'm going to scope things out around 5ish. I got a ticket for 7:30 pm friday showing.

My boss (and friend) can't stand sci fi and fantasy stuff, but his 8 year old son loves it. I know he definitely does not want to see Star Wars, but I don't want his kid to miss out. Or for him to miss out on one f the easiest dad wins ever! Taking your son to see a Star Wars movie!

How do you guys think I convince him to go?

I plan to check out the despecialized editions tomorrow. For ROTJ, should I check out the 2.0 Workprint or whatever?
It was actually partly shot in 70mm, but cinemas will choose mostly 3D over it.

Hot damn, for real? How much of it?

Is it going to do the Christopher Nolan thing at the IMAX where it switches aspect ratios?

8:30 Friday, gonna show up around 4:30 just because I'll have to beat all those people leaving work early

Maybe I'll bring the Vita and play Atelier Meruru Plus. A fat 40 year old white dude sitting alone in line playing games with those anime girls in it ought to clear me some room

Wondering the same thing for my 9pm showing on Thursday. I was thinking of getting there at 4:30, but 4.5 hours is a long time to wait, even though I think it'll be relatively entertaining as the line grows.

A few of my buddies plan to get in line at 3:30 PM...but I have this one buddy who probably won't be able to get to his seat (that we plan to hold for him) until 7:10 PM.

Are people going to be pissed? I imagine trailers should still be playing.

Put a coat there and say your friend went to get something

I think Rouge One and the other anthology films are a big risk. There is no way they know if the Star Wars fandom will come out for those movies.

Even though they're in time periods removed from the sequel trilogy, I'd be surprised if Rogue One and Young Han didn't include some kind of set-up or plot point that fed into Episodes VIII and IX somehow. It seems a little random to me to just drop two, completely unrelated and standalone Star Wars movies, in between three tied together movies.

Seeing it at 7pm on Thurs, non-reserved seating so we're getting there at 4. As long as we're the first 50-75 on line that's fine.

Avatar is the most expensive movie of all time (not officially, but it's a bit of an open secret), it was not based on a beloved pre-existing brand, and the main characters were blue cat people.

It might seem like a sure thing in retrospect, but at the time the hit-pieces were being churned out in anticipation of a collosal disaster.

In no way is a Star Wars spin-off as risky as Avatar. What is the risk? That Disney might make a hundred million dollars less than the half a billion profit than they were hoping for?

Out of interest are some people going without a reservation because the cinema isn't offering it? Or is there a different reason?

Star Wars has always been about callbacks. Lucas was obsessed with making it rhyme like poetry. Read up on Star Wars Ring Theory.

I couldn't read the whole thing but it touches on the feeling I got while watching Sith. I'd say the prequels called back to the original movies in a pretty subtle way. I'd be totally fine with TFA doing this as long as it's not all up in people's faces. Creed is basically Rocky 1, but manages to be enough of its own story and entertaining in its own right. If TFA has to reminisce about A New Hope, I'd rather it be more Creed and less Jurassic World.
