Square Enix asks fans about if Persona 5/FF15 were out at same time, release hint?

But people have been waiting for Persona 5 for 8 years.

Like myself, but to be fair P5's development was probably way smoother than the stupid handling of FFvsXIII --> FFXV.

I can't think of any hiccups in P5's development beyond a delay, which is probably just port work to the PS4.

Am I the only one who would wait for reviews before picking between these two games?
Waiting for reviews is invariably the smart approach.
And, that said, Atlus clearly has the stronger track record when it comes to delivering those than Square Enix and Tabata do right now.

Practically speaking, it's also far more likely that FFXV will drop in price in the short-term than Persona 5 will given that it's geared towards mainstream audiences and will be mass-produced. So if one was planning on buying both games anyhow within a 6-9 month window, you're going to spend less money grabbing Persona 5 first and FFXV later than the other way around.

IIRC Persona 4 barely sold 1M

No matter how bad FFXV is, it will sell more than Persona 5. I don't think anyone sane is denying that.

That's why I don't want them released close together so P5 can actually get the sales and visibility it deserves. It needs to continue to grow so console turn-based JRPGs don't die out.

Maybe in the west, I feel like Mass Effect has become too much of a third person shooter to compete in the RPG genre. Bioware games in general feel more and more like action games.

this is about Japan though.

Persona is extremely more significant in Japan than Mass Effect will ever be.

well then thats my bad - sorry ! I was thinking about the global market

In Japan however this makes totally sense, since Persona is a more serious competition there

I'm expecting FFXV to be a flawed game that I nonetheless enjoy and use as a timesink. I'm expecting to adore P5 like I have every other SMT game I've played. So yeah, I'd definitely roll with P5 first, though I do want to get both eventually.

Well...both? I've played Episode Duscae and loved it, so the full game was guaranteed from the start. And I'll probably get P5 from the US store given that it'll probably be another few months before the UK version comes out, if I'm lucky. And then I'll rebuy it when it comes to the UK for real because it'd damn well better have a steelbook edition.

I'll be very honest... I would very much buy both if they were to come out simultaneously. No mistake about that.

However, if I only had one choice, it's Persona 5.

Is is this a blantant recognition that Persona 5 will represent a massive growth for the series ?

the only thing I have learned from this site (that is not attributed to duckroll/nirolak posts) is to never use GAF to gauge sales before release.

People kept saying that, so I bought it, played it for hours, then turned it off because it was too boring.

I found it boring at first too. In fact, it took me 10 hours to not find it boring.

However, the second I reached that 10 hour mark, the game slowly became more addictive and compelling and didn't let up until the very end. Social links, the stellar character development, the neat but familiar battle system, the fact it just oozes style all over the place, and on top of all that, I actually went through a kind of game withdrawal upon finishing it, something that almost NEVER happens to me.

It's not for everyone, but those willing to make a few hour investment will generally find 80+ hours of pure entertainment.

Why does Final Fantasy get such a bad rep? One kinda bad game out of 15 great games isn't really a bad track record. If you think the company that invented JRPGs is scared of some company that still makes games for the Vita (lol) I don't know what to tell you.

Poor management, skilled people leaving, interviews suggesting the company has no fuckin clue what fans want, constant delays for ultimately panned products, not respecting the fans that brought them to fame in the first place, etc.

I say all this as someone that thought Final Fantasy XIII was the best game in the series since X.

Edit: Ah, you aren't serious.

My guess is they may be interested in targeting the summer as they will have no significant competition in the West(their new main audience). It's a question of, which is the bigger threat, going up against all the AAA Western titles in the fall or going against Persona 5 in Japan?

Anyone who actually looked at the survey would see it revolves around the work/life balance issue which is killing console gaming for Japan. They want to know what people play, when they are playing it, and how much they're willing to spend on gaming in general per month.

Persona 5 and FFXV target the same audience. Even when disregarding the money issue, Japanese people simply don't have enough free time for two massive console RPGs.

50/50 toss-up. haven't seen enough of either game to make that choice.

although i think it would be good for both games to release before fall (in the west) and with some cushion in between as the core audience who will buy these games are similar

Has square been so long out of the loop that they're getting scared?

Maximizing profits it's not about being scared. It's like releasing SF and Tekken during the same month neither game would benefit. What needs to be done is have both titles release a few months from each other so the genre remains healthy and both titles have successful launches.

Both. Play them at the same time on dual monitors bitch

Persona 5. Both games are overdue at this rate, honestly, but P5 just looks like Atlus in their prime.

An Atlus JRPG on a console and not on a handheld has been such a long enough wait, so yeah, sorry Square.

Probably getting neither :P. Persona's style/setting/life sim has always kept me away from the series. I see it get so much love online so I often consider taking the plunge but I never end up pulling the trigger. As to FF, I've not played a mainline Final Fantasy since putting XII down part way through. I enjoyed what I played of XIV, but that was an MMO with lots of nods to classic FF. Maybe FFXV will give me a reason to return to the series? From what I've seen/heard it does not look like that is the case, but who knows.

I thought I hated life sim elements before I played P4 if that means anything to you.

Day Zero. Persona is just so close to my heart, but FFXV has that group adventure feel going as well. Stoked for both the games.

Final Fantasy XV. Those production values. Call me vapid, but it's a pretty game and I've been craving something big budget with an expansive scope from Japan for ages. I'm a sucker for the visual spectacles in Final Fantasy cutscenes. I've also been waiting for it longer and I ready to just dive into an all new yet familiar world.

I'd get Persona 5 down the line. I want to play it almost as much as FF15, but I see it as more of the same. That's not a bad thing, but it makes me feel a little less urgency to play it.

I'm buying Persona 5 whenever it comes out.

Final Fantasy would kind of need to win me back at this point. We broke up a while back & I'm doing my own thing now.

The entire FF series is anime as fuck.

Why bother? Both games are anime lol you're in the wrong lane buddy.

Both of you clearly missed my earlier replies…

Okay, I despise the more cartoony, colorful anime style.

Maybe I should've been more clear. The anime style used in Persona turns me off(cartoony, colorful, etc). Never liked it, whether it's in games, TV/cartoons or movies. The style used in FFXV is not comparable to Persona.

Persona 5 is full anime though. Not that it is a bad thing, but it obviously won't sit well with some people. I wouldn't really consider the Amano designed character as Anime for the past FFs. There are nowhere close.

Final Fantasy XV goes with a more realistic visual style. I mean look at these character designs.

They are mixed with some that look like they are straight out of an Anime i.e Noctis and Prompto.

Thank you. Exactly this. The anime style used in games like Persona does nothing for me. Same with cartoons/movies. FFXV has a more realistic aesthetic, even if it falls under the anime banner. I much prefer that over the Persona look.

Maybe a lack of confidence is a better word. They've been so out of touch with the fanbase that they need to ask?

Sure you have to be a lunatic to release both in the same week, but that doesn't mean you have to avoid your competition in the same period. Well that aside I rather have FFXV release later on, if it means getting Persona 5 sooner. :P

I think I'd play FFXV first, but only because I think once they start showing the game off it will be better than expected. I feel like there would be more people saying they'd buy FFXV if we had any idea how the game is going to play, how big the world is, how we can interact with it, and what the story is even about. There have been, like, 2 trailers for Persona 5 and I have such a clearer picture of what that game is.

FFXV was in limbo for years and now that it has finally started development they've botched the shit out of promoting it. All those weird 15 second glimpses of the game that show nothing and make it seem like the game isn't anywhere close to completion. I'm sure they have a whole lot to show, but they just have no idea what they are doing.

You guys would choose P5 over the mythical and mysterious FF15? I'll be getting both day 1, but if I had to choose, I'd choose FF15 just for the sheer spectacle of a game finally released after years and years of development hell.

If that was a selling point for me, I would have bought Duke Nukem Forever.

Persona 4 has fans that absolutely despise anime art styles and high school settings. I would say keep an open mind and give it a shot, but to each their own.

Not even buying Persona so it doesn't really matter to me whether they release together or separately. It's FF all the way for me.

Although personally I hope they each give each other breathing space. Their market is mostly gonna buy both (with majority skewing towards FF) and there's no need to cannibalise each other's sales. Stagger the releases and people who want to, will buy both.

I'll be getting both, but I'm also from the UK, so Persona 5 is just a pipedream right now.

If I had a horse in this race, I'd buy Persona 5 though.

Also; don't be dicks Square, people are going to buy Final Fantasy regardless, let Persona have its time in the limelight.

So I've heard. The style is just so off putting to me that I wouldn't care to try. My loss and that's okay. Lots of people will use a game's visual style to determine if they want to even bother giving it a shot. No different here.

Atlus could also give SE some lessons on how to handle a brand. Persona being popular now is not just some huge game that put the series on the map, though P4 being exceptional certainly helped. Atlus did all these fan events, media related Persona stuff that little by little put the series on the map, it didn't take numerous spinoffs or brand damaging shit games like SE did with Final Fantasy and all those worthless spinoffs that ended up doing more harm than good to the brand. Plus the whole Fabula Nova Crystalis debacle certainly didn't help.

There's a lot riding on FFXV, and I certainly wouldn't want to be Tabata right now.
