[SPOILERS] Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Thread #2) - One Thumb Up

What if turns out Luke was already dead to begin with, and was a force ghost at the end of TFA.

That would be one hell of a twist.

Force Ghosts up to this point in Star Wars are portrayed by using the hologram effect. Luke definitely looked like you could reach out and shake his hand. Also would a Force Ghost be able to take that Saber if he choose to do so?

So she killed them all when she was like 7 years old? Doesn't the flashback to her "family" leaving her on Jakku kind on refute this theory?

Its not a real theory lol

Im just making a twist universe in my head where Rey IS the monster everyone is afraid of

But to entertain that question the flashback is fabricated by Luke Skywalker to make her stay put and never be found

What if Rey was the one who killed all the other jedis? Her vision could indicate as much, if the guy Kylo kills was really about to club her.

Her memory wipe is actually trauma.

Edit: beaten

I want to see Luke lightsaber fight someone. Ren, I guess.

Rey and Luke can both go against Ren together and Ren can kill Luke too.

Luke could be dead by the end of VIII but should be dead by the end of IX.

Why does Luke need to die at all? Han's death served that purpose of passing the torch. You need really compelling reasons storywise to off Luke beyond just handing the reins to Rey and Finn.

man people are really hung up on Drivers looks after the mask is off. My cousin who is 25 just wrote me that everything was perfect except for ugly dweeb Kylo.

lol wtf.
I get that, I think that was a common issue among the guys I went with. He looked like angry, petulant child, my estimation of him hit rock bottom when I saw him.

On a side note, anyone else LOVE that Luke and Ren kept that 70s style mullet? Nice touch by Abrams

viii has to be amazing cause we all know ix will be some lame shit with mr. jurassic world steering the ship

HE HAS SEEN THE FUTURE! QUICK! ASK HIM ANYTHING BEFORE HIS TIME IS UP!

Just kidding. It's way too early to actually judge Episode IX. I have a feeling that with the team that Disney has working on Star Wars that it'll all work out. Rian Johnson and Colin Trevorrow have some big shoes to fill.

Keep in mind that J.J Abrams will be involved (in some way) with the Sequel Saga.

I hope that once the Sequel Saga is done that both Leia and Luke survive. There's no need to kill of another OT character. Have Rey and Luke rebuild the Jedi Order and close the entire Skywalker saga right there. Throw in Ben's redemption and be done with it. After that, Disney should focus on individual characters in the Anthology films. We have Rogue One, Solo and a (presumable) Boba Fett movie coming up. I'd love to see Star Wars : Obi-Wan though.

With Rian Johnson directing and writing the next episode does this mean were getting a 2 hour movie that is essentially a "bottle" story?

I mean...he did make that fly episode from breaking bad...and ozymandis....this could go either way

Rey is the abomination, Kylo is the Kwitzat Haderach.

Right?

Shes the monster and Ben decides that going full Vader is the only way to be powerful enough to stop her

Luke is too afraid to accept the truth the such measures might be necessary

I want to see baby Rey doing backflips and forcechoking the entire academy in a flashbackscene.

If she is the child of anyone I bet its Han and Leia. It would tie in well with everything we know. It makes sense that Kylo would want to "train" her. Maybe Luke took in Rey when she was super young because she is some real force prodigy but sent her off to Jakku when shit went down with Kylo at the Jedi Academy.

Some of my friends had problems with that too. I find him so fascinating (not sexually, the acting) instead, one of the best things about the movie.

The reason Ben wants to find Luke first is to be like

"Look! I was right! If we dont stop her its going to be the fucking apocalypse!"

Let me reiterate that my twist theory has very little logical basis considering teh character moments we are actually given on screen

There is zero indication that Rey will be anything other than the cookie cutter Hero here

I thought this was his best performance in years.
Wasn't believable. I saw a man that didn't want to be there. He hated the character. ANH he was supposed to fly off and be done. Not fly in the last minute and knock a Tie into Vader's Tie trying to help Luke. In ESB they froze him because they didn't know if he was coming back. The guy doesn't want to play Han Solo and it showed in TFA.

I guess I'll have to exercise some patience til 2017 to see haha. You guys are probably both right. Just at first glance, it strikes me as out of character for Skywalker to flee instead of taking down his dark side apprentice.
Going into the movie my theory was that Luke was in hiding because he realized that the force is the cause of all conflict. I speculated that he thought the burden of the force was too great and the galaxy would be better if the force died with him.

After seeing the movie I've rethought it a bit. I think he saw how unpredictable the force was. He knows that Anakin fell under the guidance of Yoda and Obi Wan. Kylo fell under Luke's guidance. Luke may feel that the force is too dangerous because it doesn't matter how great the teachers are if the best students can still call to the darkside. Luke knows that he can't kill his nephew just as he couldn't kill his father. Perhaps Luke left hoping that Kylo would return to the light or never find a master capable of completing his training. Luke may assume that if the deep knowledge of the force does with him everything will be better off. The most anybody else knows about the force is Kylo Ren a kid that looked like he was struggling to even pull a light saber to him.

Can we have no Carrie Fisher in the sequels please? She was horrendous in this.

As much as I loved her in this movie for nostalgia reasons, General Organa can have an off-screen death as far as I'm concerned. Carrie Fisher didn't even bother to phone this in.

lol wtf.

My girlfriend has a huge celeb crush on Adam Driver. I think she was about to fight some lady when she said "Ew" during the Unmasking scene.

I have a strong feeling that Rian Johnsons movie will be even better than ESB. Read online that JJ Abrams said the episode 8 script was absolutely amazing , that Rian had done things we expect will happen after episode 7 but did stuff which we couldnt even imagine.

Fuck, now I can't wait

Was gonna wait a week before seeing this again. But, screw it, I'm catching the next showing before work. I haven't been able to get this movie out of my head. It's crazy, I think I'm even more excited to see it this second time than the first time!

Ahhhh, but young padawan, we've never seen a Force ghost in the daylight. This could be his form during the day.

She could always die of a broken heart. It runs in the family.

I cant wait for Mark Hammil playing Luke again. Really am not worried he hasnt acted "since ROTJ", he looked terrific in screen. It also parallels Luke being in isolation for some time.

He may not have acted on camera but I want to think that all the voice acting jobs have him a bit on check.

So, I finally saw this movie yesterday night. Liked it a lot BUT:

-Kylo Ren seemed a bit pathetic by the end. At the start of the film the guy just sent shivers, but damn it did they kill it later.
-Captain Phasma is so underused it hurts. Wasted potential.
-Sun physics. Like dude, you can't be firing that freaking energy while having soldiers out there not die from irradiation. And how the heck is the atmosphere contained?

The good:
-Rey is a good character. While it is too bad that "Deux Ex Machina" in which the Force trains her in 2 secs, I loved her.
-Harrison Ford delivers.
-Seeing the original cast back is good. Also it's a trap!
-The scene in which the Starkiller base first shoots, I love the way the General's pride, admiration, sense of acomplishment and idealization are captured and reflected in his eyes. The actor did a hell of a job in those seconds under my impression.

So I liked it, want to watch it again in Blu-ray. However the overall feeling of the film was:

1. They held back too much stuff. I know they need sauce for the following movies but come on... At least tell why there's another Sith master around.

2. The First Order were a bunch of wannabes. Seriously. Not even Snoke gives the same feel Sidious did. ("First Order tries to imperson Galactic Empire, fails miserably" anyone?) (also I bet the hologram is 100x zoomed in :P)

Maybe the problem is there's too much stuff to tell in 2 hours.

Fuck, now I can't wait

There has to be a twist somewhere

My vote goes to making Rey the real monster :p

Wasn't she five?

Yeah, this "Rey is the secret villain" thing is pretty dumb.

Well Ben's Daddy issues and Inferiority complex and obsession over Vader is better?

At least if Luke messed up by taking in Rey and the resulting tragedy spun everything out of control

That seems heavy enough(since it involves a little girl) for me

I told everyone on day one that making Rey the Luke Skywalker in this trilogy would be of massive cultural significance to girls and women globally and was laughed out of the thread for being hyperbolic.

Turns out I won and they lost.

I suppose, but she's not that different from, say, Katniss. Star Wars is obviously much bigger though.

Right?

Shes the monster and Ben decides that going full Vader is the only way to be powerful enough to stop her

Luke is too afraid to accept the truth the such measures might be necessary

Nah Ben is evil for real, I think she was dumped on Jakku because she had lost her memory and power. Kylo tells her to join him in TFA so no way is he the real good guy. Not happening.

One thing I don't like about Luke's story going forward. I know they are making him into an Obi Wan character, what with his self-imposed exile, etc., but I think it hurts him as a character to have the man who resisted the dark side, redeemed his father, and saved the galaxy to pack up and run away when his apprentice goes on a murderous spree.

Well they were obviously gonna have to fuck over with what was achieved in the OT somehow to move forward with new sequels.

But yeah it's pretty shitty what they did with Luke. Again, they just didn't many great ideas for this shit. Maybe Rian Johnson will wave a magic wand and make everything all better.

So far I gotta say the stand-out quote is "That's not how the Force works."

But there are a lot of quotable lines in this thing.

Can we have no Carrie Fisher in the sequels please? She was horrendous in this.

I think she did great with what they gave her. I don't know why they made all of her dialogue exposition, but I was so happy to see her. She's still got the sass she gave the role way back when. I really loved when she said "may the force be with you" at the end of the film. She looked regal in that dress with the buns like that.

The melodrama in this thread.

Nothing will top me taking my son to see Star Wars on opening night, since it's something I've wanted to do for my entire adult life.

But I really want to go back and see it again.

Except he does in the novelization of the film.

Though it could very well be this entire story thread has been abandoned late in production and the book was already being printed.

Doesn't necessarily have to be actual recognition. Could be he is referencing some prophecy that he read (leading to his fall?), which involves a girl, and seeing another force user, he assumed it was "her".

Convoluted explanation but it could work! :)

Ahhhh, but young padawan, we've never seen a Force ghost in the daylight. This could be his form during the day.

True, but then I think Rey will be in for a shock when she runs up to Daddy (supposedly) to give him a big hug.

At least she wont be able to run him through with an ignited Saber by mistake.

I know

No way they are gonna violate the straightforward setup here with Hero/Villain

Its fun to speculate where they are gonna break the mold though

I can see her struggling between light and datk much the same way Luke did but I dont see her going full dark.

Oh wow just imagine. the final shot is Rey fighting for Darth Plageous and Ren fighting for Luke in the same battle like scene as the final battle in the movie. Rey goes to the dark side because of too much power and Ren comes to the light because his mother dies (the opposite of what happens to Vader)

I can see her struggling between light and datk much the same way Luke did but I dont see her going full dark.

Same here. But how will she be tempted? She lost Han already. When one has no friends you tend to "hook" up to someone you like pretty fast. His loss could've tipped her over ... yet, she remaind calm.

EDIT
... never mind. I was typing an entire "this-is-how-8-and-9-will-go" ... but then I realised that we know nothing.
