Raise the flame shield: Your "controversial" gaming opinion.

I love Naughty Dog, and I think they make some of the best games in the industry, but I absolutely cannot stand the "Naughty Gods" fan cult on NeoGAF. It's like you're dealing with a religious cult or something. The whole developer worship, and attacking anyone who criticizes any little thing about their games simply makes me very comfortable being around Naughty Dog fanboys.

Meanwhile, Uncharted 4 is my most anticipated game, and I'm handling that like a regular person.

Yeah I agree. I cringe whenever people call them "Naughty Gods".

Final fantasy 10 and 10-2 are hot street trash

They're not great. X has very good combat and a good OST, and X-2... X-2 is a decent play if you're into cheesy lighthearted shit. The gameplay is great, and everything else is just laughing-facepalm worthy.

X-2 Trash? Sure, but good trash.
X Trash? Almost entirely, but the combat saves it.

I also found Fallout 4 to be quite boring.

The only other game I made a determination of and abandoned so quickly was Killzone Shadowfall -- also very dull.

I got as far as getting the power suit and escorting those folks back to sanctuary. I quit during the quest to make the beds.

Building shit? Aint nobody got time for that. /quit

My controversial opinion is that if you think a game is overrated, it's because you don't like the game, not because the game is actually overrated.

Games are rated where they are for a reason.

It is highly ego-centric that every game ever has the people who don't like it as much as the average person (because face it, every game ever has these people) who decide that the game must be overrated because other people value it more.

In order for a game to be overrated it first needs to be highly rated, which is why it's called "overrated" in the first place. Nobody is gonna claim that a game with a mediocre or bad reception is overrated, because it was never rated highly to begin with. And thinking that something is overrated is not necessarily the same as thinking it's bad.

And wouldn't it be equally ego-centric to claim that a person can't think a game is overrated because the "average person" really likes it? Popularity does not equal truth in either direction.

The witcher 3's combat is blown out of proportion constantly. It's nowhere near as bad as people say it is, it's actually fun and interesting and requires preparation before a battle.

There has not been a good Mario game since Mario 64.

Everything since then has been an attempt to go in a different direction that doesn't feel like Mario (Sunshine, Galaxies,) or is just a rehash of previous games (NSMB, SMM).

The closest thing to a good Mario game since 64 is 3D World. 3D World was great except the controls made it an absolute nightmare to control 90% of the time.

Galaxy is a great game, but they tried something so different that my brain doesn't classify it as a Mario game.

(The non-controversial way of putting this: I haven't enjoyed a Mario game since 64. Probably because my gaming preferences have changed drastically in the last 10 years, and I don't find much joy in platformers anymore.)

Mario 64 was great, but felt far more un-Mario like. Not sure what you're talking about.

I don't think the NX (or whatever the hell it's gonna be called) won't be released until 2017 at the absolute earliest. A large amount of people believe it's coming out in 2016 and I think that'd be suicide for Nintendo to release it in 2016.

I can't stand the idea that Japan is this land of creative games since atleast now Japan has a real issue derivative designs and plots. Anime has the same issue too.

I believe 'The Last of Us' to be one of the most overated and unremarkable games of recent times. I didn't enjoy it but I don't dwell on it.

While we're here speaking truths about TLOU, the Lee/Clementine relationship from TWD Season One was superior in portrayal to that of Joel/Ellie by a very long shot. The former stuck with me and makes me feel all emotional; the latter does nothing for me.

It surely springs from cultural ignorance on my behalf, but to me, most JRPGs in particular are an unwieldy mismash of bildungsroman-type tropes, weird pseudo-Christian imagery and mythology, and dumb save-the-world stories, and also the gameplay of the best JRPG isn't as interesting or fulfilling as the gameplay from a slightly-less-than-mediocre CRPG, there, I said it.

Yes. When I played through TLOU for the first time about 2 months ago, I couldn't shake the feeling I'd already seen most of these themes explored already and in a better way through TWD.

Kingdom Hearts is hype over substance, and catnip for fanfic types. Square Enix could name a turd "Kingdom Hearts 3.14159 to infinity" and fans would be all over it.

i actually really enjoyed my time with the last of us and even if agree that its extremely overrated.

i fully agree with this. i think that complaint is mostly coming from people that played the game on normal. I played ont the 2nd to hardest difficulty and was always on my toes during fights against monsters cause they could always easily kill me.

In turn, I think people really undersell the game in an overreaction to the overrating. Is it really one of the top ten games ever made? Nah. But I wouldn't complain if someone stuck it somewhere in their top 100.
Yeah I agree. I cringe whenever people call them "Naughty Gods".
I do think you can't forget the difference in those who really mean that versus the people just having a laugh.

I love video games but really can't stand most of the people who are into them as much as me. I have a buddy who I can talk to on the same level about gaming stuff but he moved halfway across the country this year...it's just not the same. Gaming is a totally personal hobby to me now which sucks since I used to love the social aspect of it. I never feel more alone then when I'm with a group of "gamers" being embarrassing in public.

I don't think a lot of people understand that there isn't a magic pill for any eastern developer, in any entertainment field, to create a something that resonate with the worldwide audience.

Not so, especially after decades of cultural conditioning.

I am not disagreeing with the fact that Japanese developers did 'shot themselves' in the foot last gen with some of the decisions they made. What I am disagreeing with is that against the social economic headwinds that largely shaped last gen's shift of market taste, Japanese developers are still able to be as prominent as PS2/GameCube/Xbox gen and before. Ultimately, I think it's a futile endeavor, the best they could hope for is staying 2nd-tier iin both western pc / console market.

It's very clear to me to that even with white leads in Japanese games to broaden appeal in the West, much of the games are just embed with Japanese mannerisms that may put off the western audience. Its appeal gets even more niche if it trends towards mainstream anime traits. Conversely, this is also why I am not that keen to see Asian characters, born and raise in Asia as the story specifies, in western games. Because there are nuances that they are most likely not able to capture, it inevitably will just be another soulless character portrayal but donned in Asian's skin this time round.

Hand to hand combat is absolutely garbage on Death March, especially if you're fighting multiple opponents indoors.

I feel like these days the more controversial opinion isn't to hate big AAA releases, it's to enjoy them. That being said, I've played all the past years buggiest releases "AC unity, just cause 3" and actually enjoyed them, even before patches.

The Uncharted series is terrible. I played through all of them this last week and I had to keep myself from falling asleep. The entire series just felt like the developers were sitting in the room with me just saying "Press X to make the movie go on for another scene, ok now do some really loose sloppy covershooting, now do a scripted sequence that required minimal input, ok now climb up something that's falling apart by tapping X a bunch, ok that's pretty much the entire game, we'll be back in 8 hours when you've completed the game."

Speaking of buggy games, I think people are hyperbolic when they say a buggy game is "unplayable". Most of the time a buggy game is an unconvinience at most and a lot of time can be quite funny.

Funny, I just replayed them all and was reminded how they are some of the best games of all time. I was actually going to write a lengthy RTTP after completing them all on crushing.

Is it even controversial to say Tetsuya Nomura draws horrible, horrible characters? If I google "Nomura character designs", everything I see is hideous.

I could never get into the Legend of Zelda series... I'm going to be murdered aren't I?
Nah it's fine lol

I'm beginning to feel like 2017 is more believable yeah. To start with, I've been a firm believer in a 2016 announcement AND release. But with how Nintendo has been, I feel like all we'll get is the announcement and they'll keep the actual system till the year after that.

Of course it is.

Nomura is one of the most well known artist and has created several of the most recognizable characters in gaming.

Certainly he isnt forceveryone, but he is loved far more then he is disliked.

Why would you play through them all in a week if you find them terrible? Were you being paid to review them?

Not at all, for a long time he was pretty much the main punching bag for bad Japanese designs before lolicon pandering started pissing people off even more.

His artstyle is actually nice when he's drawing more "subdued" designs, but Normura's biggest flaw is that he loves excess.

best unofficial system mascot I've ever seen
Had she been the official Amiga mascot, platform would still be relevant

I agree. Finished U3 yesterday and boooooy I loved it. Can't wait for U4. But it makes me a bit sad, because it will by my last ride with ma' boy Drake.

And here I'll definitely disagree. Though I have no idea what the hell a "bildungsroman type trope" is. But the western RPGs I've played have generally been pretty clunky as far as combat systems and user interface go. I'd wouldn't mind playing a western RPG with the puzzles of Lufia 2, the turn-based combat of an SMT, action RPG combat comparable to Ys...

There's also nothing wrong with "save the world" stories (and most of the non-open world western RPGs fall under this, too) if they are told well. In fact, it makes sense in the context of an RPG - as your character gets increasingly stronger, the stakes grow bigger and bigger.

Am I allowed to post two? :P
Skyward Sword is, overall, the best 3D Zelda. It is not perfect, but none of them are, and overall I like the art style/dungeons/world in SS more than in the fan favorites OoT, WW, and MM.

PlayStation and Xbox actually have the same target audience. Statements like "Xbox players don't buy Japanese games, all the people who buy those are on PlayStation" did not have to be true. They are a result of preconceived notions and the development/marketing decisions made as a result of those notions over the past decade. It's a downward spiral. The games aren't there, so the people who want those games go elsewhere, leaving only the Call of Halofield IV players behind. Those players don't buy these types of games, so the games don't sell, so new games like them aren't made, so the games aren't there, so the people who want them go elsewhere, etc.
Sony has done a better overall job of catering to this single, shared target audience this gen, and as someone who picked Xbox One this gen because that's what my boyfriend has and because I'm invested in my Xbox Live account from last gen, and because Sony has done some scummy/underhanded things in the past, I have lately been feeling like I made the wrong choice and that I should consider picking up a PS4 at some point for exclusives.

I liked the TLOU, but I don't think it was "the best game ever" as some have proclaimed. In fact, it wasn't even the best game of 2013.

Also, within the zombie genre, I thought Telltale's first season of the Walking Dead handled a lot of the similar story and character elements much better than TLOU (and yes, that includes the father/daughter dynamic that develops over the course of both games).

Ive also got a controversial opinion here: I think WCIII is probably the best RTS ever made. The low unit count and large numbers of abilities on single units eliminated tedious macro and focused the game on small scale skirmishes that could be completely microed.

I have similar feelings about Bungie's Myth series. I feel like people have completely forgotten how great those first two games were (the less said about the third game, the better).

God, so much this.

To piggyback on that, reading "X Outlet Posted Their GOTY List" threads that are full of nothing more than...

1. Bloodborne got robbed!
2. Witcher 3 got robbed!
3. Fallout 4 ranked? Invalid list.
4. Indie games listed. Writer is a click-baiting hipster.

...seriously make me want to stop visiting 'Gaf. That New Yorker GOTY thread was one of the most embarrassing reads in a LONG time.

I think I just need to stay out of them. Which is a shame 'cause it should be a time to celebrate the best and the brightest of the year. To learn about some hidden gems. But it's freakin' worse than a High School popularity contest.

WC III is one of my favorite games of all time because of the custom maps scene, honestly. But, yeah, I did like the focus on squads of units.

Man, it kinda annoys me that the chances of us getting another game like Myth anytime soon are slim to none.

At least give me a game that has the same "Casualties" voiceover in the meantime =(

At this point, I would be happy if Bungie would throw them up on GOG or Steam, but I've accepted that's probably never going to happen.

Assassin's Creed Syndicate: I like both protagonists but Jacob > Evie. Hardly see anyone bigging up Jacob in ACS threads.

Agreed. I was expecting another perfect Ezio type role who can do no wrong but it was nice to see a confident but flawed character. Having said that what makes him shine is the contrast between him and Evie's more grounded approach to things. Together they are probably my favourite lead characters in an AC game.
