As I stated before, gaming is ruined by people who had a Playstation as their first videogame machine. They have garbage tastes and mediocre technique.

But I don't think that's totally a western thing. Final Fantasy 7 and Metal Geat Solid started the trend.

I've read several times people mentioning how awesome Vita is for fans of Japanese games, and then they list almost exclusively JRPGs and VNs. How is that any different from saying "man, Western games rock!" and then listing only shooters? Lol.

As for JRPGs vs. WRPGs - I find most traditional JRPGs super boring, overly wordy and extremely slow (plus I hate the aesthetics in games like mainline FF and Kingdom Hearts, ew). I'd take something Diablo-ish over those, definitely. But SRPGs and monster collecting RPGs are my absolute favourite kind of RPGs, so I actually lean towards JRPGs because of stuff like FFT, Fire Emblem, Tactics Ogre, Pokémon, Dragon Quest Monsters, etc.

I just literally started playing it, loving it so far. Plus it's a much better PC port than DS1, I wonder if I'll eventually see why people think it's so bad.
 
I'm rather indifferent to the output of:

- Naughty Dog
- Rockstar
- Rocksteady
- From Software
- Bethesda
- CD Projekt RED

Good games mostly, but them existing or not has no real bearing on my gaming life.

MGS may have been made by a Japanese developer but it might as well be a western game with it's Bay like qualities.
 
If you count stealth threads like "what game do you like that other people don't like" and "worst game in a great series" threads FFXIII is easily one if not the most discussed game on GAF and I love every second of it.
 
The witcher 3 is the most mediocre open world RPG I have played this year. Mediocre/boring story, mediocre gameplay, mediocre setting.

It just didn't grab me as a game that wants to be interesting. It tries so hard to try to push the whole "there are no right choices" theme that it just started making me mad.

It is like the developers thought it would be funny to troll you. A lot of quests end in a really bad way. Which is (ironically) unrealistic. Even for a fantasy setting.

Yeah I'm more a fan of other genres so the idea Japanese=JRPG annoys me. The generalization comes from both fans of the genre and the detractors too. There is so much more out there from the country.

To be fair, according to JRPG fans, half of all Japanese games are "JRPGs" (Tales of Vesperia, Dark Souls and The Last Remnant being put under the same banner, lol).

Not really sure why you have TLR listed together with the other 2 when it has a form of turn based combat, while the others are pure action combat. Also not sure why Tales is on that list either when it has more rpg elements than the majority of rpgs that come out today. Not really sure why it's so hard for some to get it through their heads that a game can be part of multiple genres and be defined by each of them. When did "rpg" suddenly become a term that's looked down upon like "mmo" is? Like it's crazy how defensive Destiny players get when you tell them they're playing an mmo (when the majority of it's features are ripped straight from mmos), like it's the worst kind of taint to them.
 
Soul series is extremely overrated and are terrible RPG. Just like bethsoft games people praise it solely to be seen as part of the "cool" kids or "hardcore" crowd.
 
FFXIII was great imo!

FFIX has good plot and graphics, but the battle system is horrible, stupid trance.

Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 are awesome!

Best RE for me is 1-3, CV is awesome! re4 is meh action, same with 5... RE 6 Leon, ADA and Sherry camps are good, Chris sucks, it's gears of Chris.

FFVII is the best jrpg of all time, then it's FF Tactics the best of it's genre and Chrono Cross too.

I hate Chrono Trigger Akira's art, every character look at the same, just hair changes...
 
Ever since Fallout went 3D I could not give less of a shit about those games. I forced myself through New Vegas, but 3 was a complete slog and I knew I shouldn't get 4. And you know why? Because the wasteland. is. boring. Boring as fuck
Its drab. Its dull. Its a bunch of ruins. I don't like hanging out by demolished buildings in real life, why the hell would I have fun exploring a bunch of piles of concrete rubble and ramshackle homes made of sheet metal in a video game? The fact that its "after the apocalypse" does nothing for me, I don't get that fantasy and I don't get on an emotional level why other people like that fantasy, at least as its presented here. It looks like everyone is living in shit. Is it because you can shoot people and live out your raider fantasy? Surely there have to be more interesting settings for that than "in the middle of a bunch of bombed out boring buildings"
 
I'll add another one I've discovered after this year:

Kojima is easily the most overrated game designer/writer in the business. It's not even close. The storylines are nonsensical. The gameplay isn't what everyone makes it out to be. The writing is laughable. When I play his stuff I wonder if his popularity is some sort of inside Internet joke that I'm not a part of. It is absolutely bizarre.

Even if you accept all of those as being JRPGs despite them playing vastly differently there are still vast numbers of games that have come from the region that aren't an RPG in anyone's book.

Talking like Japan=JRPG discounts all the quality fighting games from the region, racers of various forms, shmups, platformers, character action, horror games and so on. That's what bothers me.
 
Basically every fantasy settings in a game is executed poorly. If I have to pick up one more Cudgel of Zanthor or slay one more skeleton...

Windows is a plague on PC gaming. Modern Windows is terrible. The appeal in consoles is never having to use it.

You still need a mouse and keyboard when you have your comfy couch PC setup which makes the whole thing kind of unwieldy. I like a clean living room. Steam big picture mode is not a solution, it's a hasty bandaid. The steam controller requires steam big picture mode? What are you, crazy? Maybe in the next few years the situation will be better, but it's not great right now.

$60 for a game is insane to me. Thankfully, the industry devalues its own work so quickly I usually pay $5. Or rent it from Redbox. I like $30 as a gaming price point but you'd be shocked to see how short games will sit at that price.

The only games I play for their story are walking simulators, which are great. A few exceptions like Mass Effect.

Hard games might as well not exist to me.

Games with a lot of choices and consequences on the story are stressful and not very fun. Most of the time, they're telegraphed so poorly to the player it screams of bad game design. Congrats, the game fooled you into alienating the characters in your party. Hope you had a save handy.

EDIT: Kojima has a gift to giving utter nonsense a real cinematic flavor. But his goal of remaking certain movies with Japanese sensibilities doesn't always work. He's like Tarantino in that he can remix things in a way modern audiences like, but Kojima doesn't have Tarantino's talent for writing.

Yes, the writing has become a joke. Yes, the storylines have become more and more strained to make sense.

However, MGSV is probably the best playing game this year in terms of control. It's unbelievable how well the control scheme comes together on the battlefield, everything is a cinch to do and it's come a long way since the fiddly controls of MGS2 & 3.

It's also the art direction. MGS4 had some of the most unique designs and ideas in gaming.
 
I left one out.
Dead Rising 1 for the 360 is the best game on that console. No other game on the 360 is as amazing as that game. I spent so many hrs playing it. I love everything about it!
The graphics, bosses, music, characters, weapons, everything. It is also one of my favorite games ever.
 
I honest to god didn't realize people thought Witcher 3 combat wasn't good. I loved it. I mean...it's just smooth and it works. Do people who hate it just suck at the game's combat?

Oh the people who don't like it suck at it excuse, combined with it working being a form of praise. There were plenty of legitimate complaints in the combat thread that's going on right now.

Nah. I personally prefer 1 cause I found a lot of 2 a slog to actually get through but 2 has much better character writing and a more nuanced look at the force. Especially now with the restored content mod available, 1080p patch and native controller support along with the UI scaling kotor 2 can go head to head with the original fairly easy.

I hate how every good game should absolutely have a sequel in most players mind. Every time a game's good, you always hear or read players asking for a sequel even though it would probably lead to a disaster and the first title was enough in itself. Most of the time its really poorly executed and nearly fucked any enjoyment of title i love like devil may cry, kingdom hears, metal gear solid or hotline miami (god, hotline miami was aweful).

I remember how I was amazed vy the way kingdom hearts relied heavily on a shroud of mystery to build interest. Even the deep dive ending was a perfect way to end the game. But to a lot of players, every open ending mean the need for a sequel, and kingdom hearts transform from a wonderful piece of game into a convulted try hard big mess of a serie with every inch of mysteries cleared.

Plus let's face it, players asking for sequels all the time give a big and perfect excuse for studios to milk franchise until they're dried and it mostly killed the need of creativity.

I feel a lot of players, if not most of them ask for sequels all the time, so I think it's truly a controversial opinion.

Maybe there are some serious problems to it that you don't mind that are breaking points for others? Not everyone has to agree.

Yeah, well. Your face looks funny! But it truly does surprise me. The first thing I thought about Witcher 3 when I played was how much better the combat was from 2, and how much smoother it felt. I'm almost afraid to read people's issues for fear it'll make me notice something that hadn't bothered me prior. I'm a sucker for staying ignorant.

Fair enough lol, I'm purposefully avoiding looking in to the frame pacing issue for bloodborne so I don't notice it lol
 
LIMBO is way overrated.

HL2 > HL1

Titanfall was a fantastic game, one of my favorite FPSes of all time.

Say what you will about the CoD franchise, but ignoring single player, it consistently has great multiplayer gameplay dynamics, gunplay, and graphics.

Mother 3 was disappointing.

I wouldn't call it boring but I do think it sits in a shitty location on the action/rpg spectrum. It's like the most basic action mechanics mixed with the most basic of RPG mechanics to the point it couldn't stand on its own in either genre.
 
1. Spelunky is the best game of the 360/PS3/Wii generation and it isn't even fucking close.

2. Dark Souls is great (not controversial), and it's better than anything Nintendo has ever created, and is likely ever to create.

3. Super Meat Boy is the best platforming game ever made.

4. Going back to Nintendo (and probably rehashing an old post I had in one of these threads).. the NES versions of Mario/Zelda/Metroid are superior to all iterations afterward, and especially the the 3-D incarnations of Mario and Zelda. I also feel this holds true for Final Fantasy and Dragon Warrior games.

5. In tandem with #4. Every Nintendo platform is a letdown from the one before, yet I still enjoy what they produce today.

6. Outside of Bloodborne, there wasn't a good AAA game in 2015.
